Nice explanation for interior stringers, thank you. Now when One's building stairs for a deck, very rarely do we have a 90 degree angle. More often than not we have an obtuse angle and in rare instances, an acute angle, hence, in essence, we need to calculate the height from top deck to where the farthest ground tread will make contact, whether it be a pad or whatever, which of course, is equally as simple. I only mention this for anyone thinking this is the only way to calculate stair stringers, and many beginners may not think outside the box. You may have covered this subject in other videos, if so, my apologies. Again, very good, clear explanations for someone wanting to learn the basics on stair building.

Edit: I watched again and I think I have it. Great videos! I have stringers that were put in for carpeted stairs. I'm moving to hardwood. Codes have changed and rise and runs are very inconsistent anyway. New stringers are needed. I can"t determine overall height due to sheet rock underneath stringers and there is a door framed in below the second floor stair opening thats blocking access to first floor. Any suggestions? I'm stuck and suspect original stringers were cut too short. Thank you!

04:50 HINT: To save time and eliminate errors, you can put the total of the first calculation [ 5,929 ] into the calculator's "M+" button; then put the total of the second calculation [ 2,756.25 ] also into the calculator's "M+" button. THEN press the "MR" button to get the total [ 8,685.25 ] . Then press the "square root" button to get the answer. EASY - PEASY 🙂

Pa code requires 2 x 10 stock material for treads. However, a 2 x 10 is really 2 x 9.75. Does it qualify as "stock material"?

Thanks for the video! There’s a potential issue with your calculations though. Let me explain: The flaw in calculating your length would be that if the lower level was the edge of a landing vs a flat floor like in your drawing, buying a board that is just over that diagonal distance still wouldn’t be long enough. Let me elaborate... Let’s say that the diagonal distance was actually closer to 8’ than the number you used in your example… let’s call it, 95”. In a situation where the lower level is the edge of a landing (not as floor), there wouldn’t be enough lumber left on the lower end of the board to allow for the vertical portion of the stringer that is required to attach the stringer to the edge of the landing. The correct length board would then be the following size up, which is 10’. Therefor, the example you’ve used above, although accurate for a flat floor in your drawing, wouldn’t work in all cases. Just something that might be a good idea to point out before someone goes and buys/ cuts the lumber to discover it’s too short. Thanks again!
@stairbuilding2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome and you're right, if the stair stringer is different from the one in the video, then you might need to get longer or shorter boards.

For 10' (height) staircase 2x12x12 * 2 boards are required a^2 + b^2 = c^2 a(riser) 120''+ b(run) 94" = c (total length of the board) 123" = 2x12x12 board

I've 92.52 inches in height with a 7.1/4 rises and 10 inch runs I will get 13 stairs ! Wright? So how long of the lenght of the wood to buy? Is not dependents of how far I wanted the stairs to be ? Or this is the minimum standard.? Coz I calculation turn up too long stringer for this , about 3m long.

I’m confused. If you’re building a set of stairs your height is obvious. But In this diagram your stairs are 77” long. Well that’s an arbitrary number that we wouldn’t have before starting a new set of stairs. Unless you’re just rebuilding. So how do we find our length???
@stairbuilding3 жыл бұрын
First you calculate how many risers, then you can figure out how many steps. If this doesn't make sense, go to the website where I have more videos about this.
