Good evening! Thank you so much for helping the channel reach over 7,000 subscribers - I'm so grateful for all the support and wonderful comments on all of the videos :) To celebrate, we've got a walk around one of the prettiest villages in Yorkshire (and that's saying something), Staithes! One of a number of locations in Cleveland with links to the history of Captain James Cook, Staithes is the best place to visit if you'd like to learn more about the explorer's life. At around 10:07 on our walk, we look up High Street towards Staithes' former Methodist Church, now converted into the Captain Cook & Staithes Heritage Centre. It's one of the best things to do in Staithes, particularly if it's not quite sunny enough to lounge around on the beach :)

Definitely picturesque and the houses do look sturdy, they have to be. I enjoyed your walk so much and with the commentary, it's like watching a story unfold as you go from one place to another. Would be nice to rent one of those houses facing the sea, ofcourse only when there's no storm ahead. Wonderful, enjoyable walk!

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - the houses of Staithes are certainly one of its most characterful features, and well worth renting if you ever get the chance, particularly to look out to sea on a sunny day :)

Staithes is certainly the classic higgledy-piggledy village, and what a gorgeous day to film. Can imagine when the North Sea storms roll in, the old part of Staithes, down near the harbour, literally howls with the wind gusts and rain. Thank you for another fantastic, informative walk. Cheers from Oz!

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - I certainly was very lucky to visit on such a sunny day, but as you mention the storms which power through the maze of lanes in Staithes makes the village a whole different animal :)

another nostalgic walk, back in the 70,s we used to come here to fish from the local cobble boats, if the sea was a bit rough it made getting back into the harbour"interesting" to say the least, thanks for the trip.
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 3 жыл бұрын
Those do sound like some hardy seaside memories of Staithes, a great fishing village if there ever were one! The cobles always do bring home that wonderful heritage, though as you mention I think rough seas do make the village quite different to how it appears on an idyllic summer's day :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

I have in the past few months, subscribed and started watching your posts and have to say a huge thank you. First of all you do not have any annoying music in the background, which allows the watcher to completely involve themselves in the surroundings and enjoy the scenery. You are also wonderfully informative and I love finding out about the history of these areas. I now intend to visit some of these wonderful places myself and look forward to seeing many more of your walks, please keep them coming 👍🏽

You mentioned Alum in your walk, I had a very successful career working with dyes, from making them to using them. Several times while I was learning my trade tutors told us the following tale about the Yorkshire Alum trade and the alleged connection to a naughty put down Alum is used to help dyes stick to fibres, most of it came from Italy and due to various wars supplies were hard to get. Someone noticed that the shale in Yorkshire was similar to the Italian type so started mining it It was mixed with fuel in large pits and burnt for up to 9 months, the Alum was then leached out using ammonia the only source then being stale urine. As vast amounts were needed barrels were put in the street for people to empty chamber pots into. The barrels from as far away as London were loaded onto ships and transported up the coast to Yorkshire. No self respecting sea captain would admit to carrying such a cargo and when asked said they were taking barrels of wine to Yorkshire. Those who knew better would reply "No you're not, you're taking the p*ss"
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 3 жыл бұрын
Ooh that's an interesting connection indeed - well-told with a good punchline there too :) I've learned about the vast quantities of urine that came in and out of places like Staithes and Whitby - but I never thought of such a link to the phrase - thanks for telling us about it! And thank you very much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video :)

Excellent video thankyou. This location is mentioned in Neil Oliver's love letter partly due to it being the hometown of Captain Cook and also very picturesque. I liked that you used text rather than audio voiceover although that can work well too. Quite relaxing and I've decided youtube/armchair tourism is a great idea 💡

Could you tell me about parking, do you have to park out of the village and walk in would love to visit but being on the elderly side don't know if suitable, brilliant video.
@LetsWalkUK
@LetsWalkUK 3 жыл бұрын
I can indeed tell you about parking! Like many small villages on the coast visitor cars aren't allowed into the seafront area (where this walk is focused on). If you're coming to Staithes by car - there's a big car park about a five minute walk from the village centre, the only issue is that to walk back to car park from the village it is a little bit steep (although much less so than Robin Hood's Bay and Runswick Bay if you've ever been there). It's an absolutely wonderful place to visit and certainly worth it if you fancy the idea - hopefully this helps :) And thank you very much for watching!
