It is really hard for businesses, especially small to medium ones, with high cost of rent and labor, and crime. The SF Bay Area is a mess when it comes to crime. I rarely go out at night becuase I do not feel safe. I am now in Kyoto, and I was in Singapore and four cities in Taiwan. I went out at night. Never once was I worried about my safety. If we want our economy to do better, we need to address crime, our culture, homelessness, mental health, drug sale/use, wealth gap, and education. We can be better if we are willing to make changes.

Overpriced rent is what killed really great restaurants that used to occupy that venue. Kincaids, Spaghetti Factory, TGIF, El Torro's, and Han's Habachi. All of these new joints are tailored for the nightlife or couples and not families to enjoy

I think you mean crime is the #1 reason. When they signed their leases, rent was not the top concern as crime it was much less and they expected plenty of foot traffic. As for family entertainment - I am born and raised in Oakland in 1970. I don't recall one nighttime kid friendly venue except for an A's, Warriors, or Raiders game. This wont change anytime soon unfortunately. Probably not in our lifetime.

It's priced to attract visitors and tourists, that's why. There's a ton of businesses and offices, along with 5,000 residents that you could be catering to. I worked in JLS for 10+ years and my go-to spot was Jack's Bistro, a side spot to an expensive restaurant, that baked up fresh bread every day along with great homemade soups. For about $3.50-$4.00, I could get a bowl of soup, fresh sourdough bread and real butter 😍 In the summertime, it was a salad. I wasn't spending a lot each time, but I went there to eat 3-5 times a week.

​@ Me too... me too 😞 I recall the problems at TGIF and it was mainly weekends. I don't think Spaghetti Factory had as much but rarely went there. Now our problem crowds roam 7 /24 days per week vs the weekend like back then. To be honest its probably safer on weekends today as more people are out. Today's trash crowd is all about stealing vs. fighting over who was first in line TGIF's 😅 - It's all so sad what has become.

@its-all-good and all the chaos on Hegenberger, closing In and Out, Starbucks, Denny's, etc.. I used to work near the airport in the late 2000s. No real issues at the places around there, just guys selling CDs at Walmart parking lot but not a lot of break ins. Now it's the most crime ridden corridor in the country. The city should have swamped that area when it was trending bad, set up sting operations, anything to stop the mofos doing this crap. Now it's too late. The area had so much potential to have much needed retail, eateries, etc...

As a middle-aged retired Black woman raised in Oakland, that is completely untrue. Oakland has Little Saigon(where all the illegal gambling and human trafficking happens), China Town (where the some of the Asian mafia operates from), Little Mexico ( where most illegal street vendors are located), and the Lake Merritt area, etc where a majority of White folks live in over-priced condos and apartments( all the over-priced coffee shops and restaurants are). We do have a few Black folks here, but make up a small percentage of the pop, but a large presence for late night news. Come get some chocolate lil man.🤣🤣
