One of the interesting characteristics that German War movies tend to highlight more than other countries war movies in the boredom of it. Lots of waiting and repetitive operations, without any end of than eventual death, maiming or unforeseen surrender.

My grandfather too. He refused his children (my mother and her brother) to wear the Hitler Jugend cloths. As punishment he was sent to Stalingrad. This scene 1:32:10 reminded me of something. One thing I learned about WW2 that never gets discussed were the millions of animal casualties. The Germans relied heavily on horses, as well as the Russians somewhat early on, and it's very sad thinking of millions of these poor animals trapped in a warzone, frightened and dying in just about every way imaginable. Also millions of dogs and cats starving or blown up in bombings of cities. 😞

Even today, modern day metal detectorists are finding the remains of soldiers from both sides, who died there. Some in trenches that were slowly filled in over time and others just out in the middle of a seemingly empty field. One by one their remains are repatriated to their country, where any remaining relatives might claim them and finally give them a proper burial. Yet many thousands remain, hidden from sight from loved ones never knowing what happened to them. To you brave souls, I raise my glass to honor you, no matter your nationality. As an American veteran, I drink to your memories! Salute!

In a small role of a soldier, you find one of the best known present Czech actors, Hynek Čermák. - Can you spot other interesting details? Share with us!

This film was immensely engaging. The scope of human emotions reveled in similarity to All Quiet of the Western front. The breath of the courageous human spirit now broken, torn, despaired, beaten down, betrayed of all your morals and finally, the harsh reality of war: Humans are the cruelest mammals that have ever resided in this planet. …and yet, we can live equally as large. You choose your destiny, but when you let others do the planning for you, you will live in an unpredictable world of turmoil.

Stalingrad (1993) definitely was one of the best WW2 movies of all time and certainly without a doubt the best depiction of how combat and trying to survive in and around Stalingrad really was. I love how they used the actual speech from Hitler claiming that Stalingrad was taken when in reality the Wehrmacht only controlled 90% of the city. They didn't control all the crossing points on the West side of the Volga.

Thanks for posting, by far the best film of the battle from the German POV (Enemy at the Gates the best Russian POV) It's from the producers of Das Boot, several of the cast were in both films. The lieutenant has been in many WWII films, including Valkyrie, and also Joyeux Noel, about the Christmas truce in WWI, another outstanding film.

Great movie, but one question. Did you edit it? In the version I watched in the 90s at 1:11:53, the tank runs over the german soldier and literally burries him in the snow. You can see the scene with the tank doing a 360-degree on the guy.

Das Boot is absolutely brilliant and hasn’t become that dated over time. Even the effects of the bombing of the base at the end are very realistic considering the time it was filmed and not exactly a Hollywood budget.

My high school shop teacher in the 80s was a USMC Vietnam vet, who had lost part of his hand. He was a nice helpful guy, skinny and looked a lot like James Cameron and Owen Wilson with those 1960s black plastic framed eyeglasses, but he took no schitt. We had a gangsta wannabe stealing our tools and he physically threw him out! Mr. A made a big impression on me. He even picked me up one day when I was walking home in the rain. We asked him about his war stories, but he only told us that the coldest he'd ever been was sitting in the rain at night in Vietnam. So cold he cried.
