Haunting Grounds is THE stalker game. I love how effective it is within the context of the story. Alien is amazing but you have some tools to aid you (flamethrower, flare etc) and it's fitting to how the story took place. Fiona is so so helpless, even when with the help of Hewie, he can also be unpredictable at times and all you can do in the game is run run run and hide which helps drive home the narrative of the game
@RosemaryLovesU Жыл бұрын
Haunting ground is one of my fave horror games of all time simply because it plays so well into the already existing fears you have as a woman. Being watched/chased, knowing you can only run therefore constantly being on the verge of a panic attack just so someone can abuse your body feels very realistic even in that setting.

Absolutely! The antagonist wants to use Fiona as an object to birth his clone, the different stalkers are like different aspects of fears related to being objectified. Debilitas sees Fiona as no different than a doll, something to win, to play with, a pretty thing to own. He doesn’t mean to harm her, and possibly doesn’t even recognize that his actions harm her or are unwanted. It’s like a little child wanting to catch a cat and not understanding why the cat wants to be left alone. He just can’t grasp the “theory of mind” concept, the understanding that other people have their own minds and their own desires. Debilitas sees Fiona as a precious object, the prettiest doll, incapable of having her own feelings about what she wants. Daniella sees Fiona as the sum of her biological properties. Daniella is *intensely* envious of Fiona because Fiona is a real woman, capable of pain, pleasure, sensation, and most importantly (to Daniella) bearing children. There is nothing Daniella wants more than to be a real biological woman, something that she will never achieve. Daniella sees Fiona as an ideal body, not a person. Riccardo sees Fiona as an object of conquest. He wants to shoot Fiona, defeating her, and then he wants to take her virginity by force. A real nasty man. I forget his name, but the final stalker, the one who wants Fiona to birth his clone, sees her as a useful tool for his own plans. It’s nothing personal, he just doesn’t care how Fiona feels about his plan, he can use her whether she’s willing or not. Fiona is a tool to be used, not a person. I think this last fear, at least in the abstract, isn’t unique to women, because this is how most big companies treat their employees. It still sucks though.

That AI trick from White Day reminds me a lot of an experience I had playing Cry of Fear way back in the day. I'm not sure if they ever fixed it, but the iconic Sawrunner enemy from that game had to stop moving in order to attack you, which it could easily do if you sprinted for too long and exhausted yourself- lowering your default movement speed. Unfortunately it couldn't actually hit you if you just walked away at the default movement speed lol, running away from the enemy is literally the only way that it could kill you.

that can easily be a intentional mechanic like how Lethal Company an other games you only die if you forget how each enemy works
@kman1893 Жыл бұрын
Im pretty sure thats intentional, because if you continuously run from sawrunner you run out of stamina and die. I dont think its possible to beat sawrunner any other way. Personally, my favorite game with a stalker is alien isolation. The alien is constantly on the prowl, but they design the map to give you options most of the time and as you play through the game, you get tools to help you progress. With sound design, you can pinpoint the alien's location and figure out the route to take to avoid it. The alien's A.I. is so good and it leads the alien close to you enough to keep the tension on, and leads it away if it's been too close to you for too long. Few hiding places are safe forever. It's a difficult experience, but well worth it. As for how a lot of players almost never run into the alien, there's two ways. 1) theres a mod that removes the alien's rubberbanding layer of the A.I. which basically lets the alien just f off and leave. 2) There's an exploit in the alien's A.I. if you're playing on nightmare difficulty. Basically, the alien on nightmare mode is programmed to be constantly trying to calculate where you are and track you down, no matter where you hide. However, if you keep moving at a steady pace, the A.I. keeps recalculating your most likely position, making the alien more likely to stay in the vents until it's more sure. So, the trick to maintaining a speed fast enough to have the alien second guessing whilst not giving away your position is literally to just stand up and walk normally while the alien is in the vents and don't make any noise. I tried this once. It works surprisingly well. While walking and standing straight up, the noise you make is only loud enough to be heard in your immediate surroundings. In the vents or far away, the alien can't hear you.

i think Haunting Ground and Outlast similarly do stalkers and general unkillable enemies really well, and i think it's specifically comes down to the characters u play as. for a character like Leon or most resident evil protagonists (or Dead Space), there's a cognitive dissonance between a highly trained soldier/someone trained with weapons and being unable to kill this ONE enemy when u can EVERY other. in Haunting Ground and Outlast, Fiona and Miles are victims from the very beginning, theyre never able to directly fight back against ANY enemy, not just one. they also both have long stretches of time where the fear comes from the environment and the ambience, not the actual bad guys chasing you. thats where Outlast 2 went wrong in my opinion, there was too much going on AT ALL TIMES, u never had a moment to breathe, to consider u might be safe. that's also why Ashley's sections in the original RE4 are the scariest to me. she can't fight back, she, like Fiona and Miles, is just a victim doing her best.
@EddieM199410 ай бұрын

I have a phobia of being chased slowly and unrelentingly at a steady pace, so stalker enemies can sometimes make a horror game unplayable for me. But I do still admire them as a mechanic, especially if done well. Though I loved the RE2 remake and Mr X is a REALLY effective stalker enemy, I literally had to put the game down because I couldn't stop shaking and panicking while playing and it made progress really slow if not kinda impossible at some points. I had to fight some serious inner demons to make it through Jack Baker in RE7 the first time as well.

Man Haunting grounds is such a gem, the music tricks were one of the coolest things in the game. Wish it had a remake. I with i could play it again my PS2 is in tech heaven :( You mentioned the music, but for people who have not played it as he said they come into the room to play out there searching animation, but the game would tell you when the characters were faking you out! So they would leave the room and there would be silence, if the silence remains you're not safe, they're waiting to dive back into the room as they THINK you might be in there and leaving will make you come out thus getting you attacked, it was honestly one of the coolest systems once you figure it out it obviously becomes easier, but when it finally clicks as this was back before easily accessible guides it was a "holy, wait is this a real thing or am I becoming paranoid" And Hewie is THE BEST BOY.

being someone who suffers from anxiety, no horror games put me on edge like ones with stalkers, it's even worse when i run towards a room where there's no one except the character i'm playing, and i get this weird feeling of dread that they're out there, waiting in the next room.

every so often i come across a new channel, one i've never heard of, but it covers horror media, and sometimes i'll learn within, maybe the first ten seconds that, they're something special this is one such instance

At the very start of the video, I was a little confused as to why is Hozier waddling towards me menacingly. I still am.

I'm so surprised you never mentioned Silent Hill 3, which in my opinion, has the scariest stalker in a video I've ever played. Finding the notes left by Stanley and finding a still lit item in a room really hits home of it being a very realistic stalker.

I'll never get tired of these mechanics. I'll always shit my pants. But I'll come back for seconds every time.

Finally! someone is talking about Haunting ground. No matter how much I play it over and it never knocks out the tension out of me, such an underrated gem.

Bit of obscure example but this may be interesting to some people here: there's a very neat stalker-type enemy in Thief 2 fan mission "Builder's Paradise", also otherwise very atmospheric and nice horror experience.

I fricken love siren it's so damn stressful a the good way, also silent hill 4 in the second half when the main antagonist Walter chases you through the game with a chainsaw and uzi while laughing at you is so good.

I had no clue there were multiple villains in haunting ground I thought it was just debilitas chasing you through the whole game.
