When season five first started and I remember 10 had regenerated into 11 i thought “god this is the new doctor” by the time the 11th hour had finished I felt Matt Smith was the doctor. Series 5 is a personal favourite, not all gold (looking at you Chibnall 2 parter) but as a whole a really great season. His relationship with Amy and how that reflected on his run as the doctor as a whole, his ability to pull off the whole old soul in a young body, the redesign of the tardis interior, some truly incredible episodes like Vincent and the doctor, Amys Choice and even the lodger. Of all the modern show runners I just think Steven Moffat had the best handle on both of his doctors.
@adampoll49773 ай бұрын
It was hard to follow Tennant as the new Doctor, but I feel Smith really nailed it as someone who LOOKED human but was entirely an alien. Baker excelled at this in moments as well, and Troughton - the two of which Smith amalgamated really well and pretty much from the beginning of his run. Where Tennant played the knight-errant and brooding heartthrob, Matt played the ancient alien wrapped in a childish skin - wisdom, and child's naivety and wonder in an awkward balance. There is a real joy to this season, even in the darker moments, and Smith really could pull off a grand speech.

This season caused my daughter to imprint on Matt Smith as "her Doctor". (Much later, she came to favor Peter Capaldi.) For my wife, it was Peter Davison, since she started watching when his run was playing on PBS. It's an interesting phenomenon. I first came to watch a lot of the show and become familiar with it during the period it was off the air, so there isn't any incarnation who's "my Doctor", unless it's Paul McGann, or maybe Christopher Eccleston when the series rebooted (I do like him).

I should have hated it. Plot conveniences, lots of handwaving, upending how things worked, a frantic manic fast talking doctor but dammit. This season killed it. It was just so much fun and had so much energy but also uncertainty in the characters. You could see the moments that were written as 'pluck the heart strings' but I didn't care because the cast (regular and guest casts) sold it. I thought I'd find Matt Smith annoying but instead he felt (for the first time in ages) actually alien or possibly just not taking his ADHD meds. Either way, this was a season that just came together in a way that didn't need to be perfect - just let it's cast have something they could work with and elevate it.

My take on the New Who show runners is RTD is great at writing compelling characters with engaging dialogue, and will then put them in a situation that is fourth wall shatteringly stupid. Moffat is great at coming up with thoughtful high concept scifi: but he can pull this off about twice a year and otherwise will write himself into a corner where the solution had no payoff. Chibnall is a redditor whose fanfic somehow received BBC funding.

@@andylikesstuffchannel sure. I've come to terms with post reboot Who being something I can't get on with. I preferred Who as a hapless traveller rather than the messianic mythic hero RTD and SM made him. It's just a personal opinion. Every time I dip into reboot Who I see something that annoys me, like the Daleks and Cybermen teaming up to lock the Doctor up in a magic box to save the universe. To me, fucking ridiculous, and every story from this era seems equally hilariously stupid, but I'm happy other people find something great in there. Like I said, it's just not for me.

series 5 and 6 were Moffat's best. A great Doctor in Matt Smith and pretty good to great to excellent scripts led to some of the best Doctor Who. Problem was, from series 7 on, it just declined until unfortunately, one of the best Doctor in Peter Capaldi got the shaft. Truly sad that just like Sylvester McCoy, he also didn't have scripts, even though he was so good. But mind, for Peter Capaldi, his later seasons take on The Doctor deviated more from his way better dark portrayal to the inferior Matt Smith goofy clone, but since it's Peter Capaldi, he made it work still. Still, wished we got to see him continuing being The Doctor of series 8.

I didn’t enjoy the new Who and only watched a handful. Every episode I watched, or saw bits of, had a good build up, story-wise, but all end the same. It’s a lot of running and so much shouting - The End. A lot of the shouting seems to be about ‘Ha! You made a mistake and I’m so powerful …’ (pulls lever) The End.
