Thanks so much for watching and commenting! That particular technique is called palm-muting, which basically involves using part of the picking hand to slightly dampen/mute the strings as they're being played to create a more "chugging" type of sound, rather than letting the notes ring out. It's very common in any style of music that uses overdriven/distorted guitars.

Yep you caught me! Guitar strings are both too old and too light, but I was being lazy and didn't change them. Was hoping it wasn't too noticeable but obviously I was wrong. Thank you for the reminder that it's never good to cut corners
