Had the great pleasure to see him play in 1974 in Raleigh NC. I was 4 feet away at a front table! A few weeks later got to see Woody Herman....

I think the classiest comment I've ever heard of was when John Coltrane said of Stan Getz..."We'd all sound like if we could."

Saw Stan , Kenny Baron , Rufus Reid and Victor Lewis at the Toronto Jazz Festival JUNE 1987 and he played this old chestnut also Frankie and Johnnie.He inspired me as a kid to take up the Tenor and it got me out of a small town in Ireland to London England playing with Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield and Matt Munro. and eventually to New York where I played with Harry James's band, Lionel Hampton Kai Winding, Ray McKinley, Nat Pierce etc. Thanks Stan for giving me a career and a Life.

to Zoot. I grew up on the West Coast and loving the sound of West Coast jazz , (mentored by Chet Baker and got my first gig with Shelly Manne) but when I heard Stan's solo on "Early Autumn" with the Woody Herman Band It blew me away. I was a keyboard session musician but I think Stan was probably 1 of the 3 greatest jazz musicians that ever picked up an instrument. I used to have endless conversations with him when he would be gigging at the Colonial in Toronto...it was just fabulous!!

As a jazz musician, I think they just got "the formula" right. I always pair myself up with a faster bop player, as I emulate Stan. To me it's just as important as having a rhythm section that plays ahead and behind the beat, rather than just one.

I'm fairly certain Liszt was better, or Kissin, or Cladio Arrau. Just saying.
@cashglobe3 жыл бұрын
@@mr.giggles6265 Thats like comparing an all time Boxer with an all time Mixed Martial Artist, or a Hockey Player with a Lacrosse player, or a Nordic Skier with a Freestyle Skier. Liszt, if traveled in time to the Jazz era, would have probably been a great player, but hard to say if he would have had the feel and beat that someone like Kenny does. Lord knows 99% of Classical cats have shitty time. But I also don't think Kenny has the same technical chops that Liszt had, so again, it's just a non argument.

Stan Getz & Kenny Barron were Absolute Giants on their respective instruments in every sense of the Word ! by coincidence, I happened to meet up with Stan's son, Steve shortly after his dad passed- we soon became friends of a kindred spirit.. Steve Getz is an accomplished Jazz Drummer in his own right!

To take a ballad of that vintage and make it fresh, new and innovative is pure genius! Reminds me of Stan's take on "Penthouse Serenade", can't listen enough to those tunes. R.I.P. Stan Getz.
