I really enjoy how he takes a strange liking to data, and quickly begins treating him entirely normally. Doesn't get hung up on the "robot" thing at all, and just wants to party and play football with him. It's not curiosity about his nature as an android, but instead seems to be some kind of simple appreciation for Data's straight forward and 100% genuine way of relating with people.
@FlyingMonkies3252 жыл бұрын
I think we get it living in the 21st Century where people are made to not act straight forwards and just full on dishonesty and manipulative, whenever i meet someone who's just to the point and straight forward no shenanigans i gravitate towards them and i'm like that too so i appreciate when someone else is, i get frustrated by most people how difficult they make things and for us to even get to know them like... impossible and i just want them to be like whatevs. It's one of the reasons i wish i could be in the 24th century they just take things as simply a conversation and join in with you they don't go "eww... what are you doing? your a creep", so it's totally understandable why Stan would relate to Data.

Since having sex outside your species is called "bestiality", that particular brand of sexual deviancy is apparently OK in the 24th century... because that green girl (among others) definitely is not human... just ask Kirk. I'm told there's some short stories that follow all three of these people. Stan actually does become a big hit singer and sparks a revival in country and folk music, and eventually becomes sort of a "Frank Sinatra" type entertainer during the Dominion War. He also kicks his addictions. Oppenhouse fittingly becomes the Federation Ambassador the the Ferengi Alliance, and the woman who's name I can't remember joins up with Temporal Affairs and becomes a counselor for other humans that suddenly find themselves in the 24th century. This includes the crew of the USS Bozeman from "Cause and Effect."

Lol totally they've done absolutely everything, What is there left to do? i can't think of a damn thing, same for books, games and music every genre and scenario has been written about. By the end of the decade in 2030 the Starlink Grid is going to be ready for everyone to use and by the sounds of how it will be used it will go the same way of just being a Database to access rather than The Internet with an overwhelming amount of content which is TOO much we can't ever keep up with all... Simple and more streamlined to access in just 1 place is much better than a million channels and websites, simple is always best for us really. I'm honestly fried by being spoiled by all the shows, movies, music and books too i think we all are i think we have a good collection of stuff now that will help keep generations of people entertained for a lifetime.

@@honkhonk8009 Starlink once it's ready will no doubt start to make the internet faster and faster there's no slowing it down after this point and china have already come up with 6G while we're still on max speed 4G (despite what internet companies currently advertise lol) ST will start at 5G which is going to be about 6 times faster than 4G already in the UK some people are getting 4 times faster, and because of the very low latency disruptions to the connection will probably be minimal, and because it will be used to control robots and using AI to do a bunch of other things i doubt it will be called the internet at some point. It won't be just Starlink though a few other big companies are in the works of putting a small number of their own satellites up to provide global service, of course yup they would piggyback off starlink to do that but they still need the competition to keep prices down, we already have One Web and now Virgin and Amazon will be part of it too, then a couple other companies sooo we'll have a few to choose from. The problem is with the internet there's too much stuff taking up space most of it that's either junk or just not at all useful none of us actually look at most of the stuff because search engines already put the websites most people found the most useful at the very top lol i rarely ever have to switch to the second page of google to find what i need, meanwhile websites that have SO much content it's the same thing i rarely leave the first page of results lol. There's such a sheer amount of content that we just can't keep up with it... and we're at a point where other people aren't looking at it all anymore either because it's too much, so streamlining it down somehow would be a good way to go so we only have all the best stuff and won't be overwhelmed by so much stuff and there won't be so many search results it has to bring up. The ChatGPT is intriguing but i still see myself just searching things most of the time, it think it's alright to help you spot things you can't see yourself or even when you fail to see the obvious (which i think we're all prone to doing for whatever reasons lol) or get it to give you a list of concepts you need to learn for something, so i think it could be useful to fill the grey area there which i certainly could use (i hope it's just integrated into computers at some point), but if i don't know anything about something then i have no information to provide it nor any idea what i'm looking for. So i think this is why the internet should go more towards a database somehow even if it is still technically a huge database of created content, so then with far less results it can much more easily find what you need.

People currently still watch it and probs will over the next decade, i think throughout 2030 once the starlink grid is ready then all tv channels will go to using internet signals to broadcast instead some channels already are like disney and news channels and tv shows are already streaming online. I think 2040 is right though cos i can see it fading off permanently throughout the 2030s before tv channels are no more... and we just have the news networks streaming on youtube like they already do. As for tv shows and movies i dunno... maybe that will last a bit longer through the 2040s and 50s put on streaming sites, but the fact we've done it all hollywood has to pack up it's bags sooner or later, we know they'll milk it right until the very end though cos it's a multi-billion industry. Once that happens our world will start to escalate to be like in TNG which i know is the "utopia" space age governments are looking to accomplish and there's already space stations in space that sort of have rooms in them and use submarine doors to keep in the pressure for artificial gravity. There's already talks of creating space stations where people can vacation, but there's still work to be done to properly figure out artificial gravity so they can put it in a nice looking space station without the need for ugly submarine doors. Honestly i'm looking forward to it, although now we're getting more tech and it's not quite as it seemed i'm hopeful we'll come out of this addictive tech phase and get to a better place, people will start communicating again in-person and we can start getting somewhere real, too bad we won't get too see things when they get more advanced to TNG level i would like to live in those times.

Yes because in the future once he sorted through things, got better with his alcohol and drug addiction, and adjusted to the 23rd century he went on tour around federation space stations and they loved it so much it got people back into 20th and 21st century music. It was written in one of the star trek books. Based on him saying "well i'll be bigger than i ever was" he was clearly quite a popular country musician in the 20th century but sounds like he just didn't feel appreciated and his career was on decline, which is no surprise there at all. His behaviors of addiction and touching people without permission and sleeping around no surprise there either because record companies corrupt musicians in such a way so they're vulnerable enough to take advantage of them. @FlyingMonkies3252 жыл бұрын
It's totally right we can already see it, once the Internet Satellite Grid aka Starlink is fully ready for everyone to use at the end of the decade in 2030 it will be over for Television, already shows and movies are just going online, of course if you read between the lines it was also the end of shows and movies because nobody seems to create them anymore in their world, and judging from the way things are going with The Entertainment Industry for books, games, shows, movies and music everyone's done it all lol so i think we're looking at the whole industry going down within the next 15 years at least maybe sooner, forcing us to find things to do rather than being distracted by it, Star Trek TNG is too realistic to not have been told about it lol. The internet Satellite Grid is also capable of transferring power between cities then eventually countries from what i've read about energy being able to sent as a signal and they can already do this using Satellites, China are working on one that takes energy from the sun in space then sends it as a signal there will probs be some loss as it travels to where it's sent but it can help in emergency situations. It will be the start of being connected to a giant Grid the same as they have in Star Trek, what you see in Star Trek TNG is the internet the way they talk to other ships on the view screen or made video calls to earth and other planets then how they transfer files but in some ways they didn't keep things so open source anymore and different people have access to different things depending on what they do and their starfleet rank. They have access to tones of information still and they seem to create and write things for others, there's also a Federation News Channel too because journalism still exists but not really in the same way as now because i imagine they wouldn't be able to be as horrible as The Media are in our current time, but it's more like a sorted Database rather than millions of websites existing which frankly is chaotic and hard to control lol. From how Microsoft and Google have been talking about it and allowing Elon Musk to connect to their Databases i think we'll see the start of things going the same way where we can access it as just a Archive of information, it's better that way really so we'll actually get up and do things rather than being addicted to it. I can't wait honestly... we've all lived through to know what being addicted to the internet does to us i'm FREE! lol.

Star Trek isekai episodes (or portal stories) allow for the writers to explore more of the universe/lore. But this was one of the better episodes. I liked the concept of discovering people in cryosleep, but just plain ol' people rather than Khan's super soldiers. It was a bit like a first contact style episode, but between 24th century humans and earlier humans. But it also had the little gamesmanship between the Enterprise and a Romulan ship. This episode made the Enterprise crew look very amateurish. i) They didn't conceal visible non-humans from sight at first, which should be an obvious aspect of easing them in. ii) They didn't assign an Ensign or someone to get them up to speed. They just let them sit there. Just showing them the replicator would have kept them occupied and happy for a while. iii) They didn't even have someone guard the door. iv) Putting them in a '1990 USA' Holodeck simulation would also have kept them happy. The Enterprise crew just failed totally. 800+ Starfleet Officers, and still.

really wanted to have an extended episode on this. does anyone know if any of the books delve into the things raised in this episode more? they did a good job, but there was so much more that could've been discussed with all of this. for one, the wealthy guy might have enjoyed learning about the Ferengi.
@ensignmjs70586 жыл бұрын
b. free, the "wealthy guy" does get mentioned in a novel. He becomes an ambassador for the Federation. I don't remember the novel as I read it 20 years ago. The funny thing is that I do remember that when meeting Picard again he ordered a Coke or a Dr. Pepper or some other carbonated drink from the replicator. That stuck with me because he said he had to program it into the replicator. I assume it's because it has no nutritional value so a starship wouldn't replicate it and because the recipe was so old. Also, because it was "fizzing," the novel version of Picard thought it looked like it came from a chemistry experiment. I read somewhere else that he is mentioned in a second novel. I would imagine the character does rebuild a reputation for himself because that's the kind of man he is. But I don't think that, working for the Federation, he became "rich" again. His "wealth" would come from respect for his accomplishments, perks for being an ambassador, and self-improvement.
@bfree-gm6xw6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I found out that all three appear in a couple of different novels. The wealthy guy was ambassador to the Ferengi! Which I immediately thought of after watching the clip. Later he goes on to serve as Economic Secretary for the Federation or something like that. The woman goes on to serve as a counselor for time-shifted peoples. The musician, well, I couldn't find anything out there. There are two moments that were interesting in the show for me: where he asks for a copy of the WSJ, and the other guy asks to watch TV. And in both cases -- nope, we do not have those on the Enterprise.

I love and totally agree with some of the comments about wishing there had been continued stories in some sort of series with these characters. ALL of them were intriguing in their own way (for me, especially Stan). This got me thinking (while reading the comments) how my favorite of the feature films made of Star Trek series were the two that dealt with sort of similar scenarios, reversed: The Voyage Home when the original series characters go to San Francisco and deal with whales, etc. and the TNG movie "First Contact." Time travel stories are generally my favorite type of science fiction so this fits right in in a sense.

I remember watching this the first time in college in 1987 and we sort of went “Why did they pick such an OLD MAN as a captain?” Our criticism was somewhat valid, Picard looked old. I was 19 then so 47 was old, but Picard looked 60 to me.
@erictaylor54625 жыл бұрын
@@leonandrews7180 I was in high school myself. So, how's the "over 50" category there, old man? It's funny, when I look at those old episode, Picard doesn't look as old to me as he used to. To be fair, at the time my own parents were 43. My parents have always been old to me, even when they were in their 30's. I think "old" is like fusion. It's always 20 years older than we are. Very few people I interact with still "watch TV". Yes, they may stream a video here and there but that's not the same thing. Streaming a video you are specifically choosing what you want to entertain you, not the other way around, which is how network TV always operated. It is already vastly different than in the era this series ran, where the typical family home was watching network TV. These days, it's about the household selecting choosing what form of media they want.
