I'm Kikuyu- a tribe in Kenya and this video makes me want to cry. It's beautiful when a group of people have a voice in how they are portrayed. It is a powerful thing when you are your own storyteller or the storyteller is someone who does not downgrade you but understands you. I am an artist and music videos like such are EXACTLY what I want to create. Thank you for this.

Smurfy Lee Oh no worry! We're kinda in the shadows because our government don't really wanna acknowledge us hence we've become sort of "invicible". Hell Swedes aren't even taught about us in school and we share country. Hilarious! Tell me if you have trouble finding info about us :)
@smurfylee
@smurfylee 7 жыл бұрын
Ávvudallat 90 OK thanks. yes my aboriginal culture was not taught in schools here til recently, and even with that it's false, pretty much teaching that everything was hunky dory when the English came and that my ancestors were so happy and pleased to discover rifles and scissors and flour from them haha!
@josephineoberg5774
@josephineoberg5774 7 жыл бұрын
Smurfy Lee Really? We get ro read about you guys a tiny bit more than sámi people though I feel like all schools no matter where really needs to put focus on the native people of all countries. Here they don't even wanna apologize for what they put us through, racial biology studies among a lot of stuff. Although the swedish church actually did apologize a couple of months ago but we still lost most of our religion and these last years our language have been taught a wee bit more often. But in general everyone, including natives, need to keep fighting for proper education. Knowledge is still the lightest burden to carry and we can't tur our back to the fact that those who don't know their history is doomed to repeat it.
@smurfylee
@smurfylee 7 жыл бұрын
Ávvudallat 90 you're right. Yes I did know that our culture was taught more overseas than in our own country! Frustrating that your peoples are still struggling with some issues with not even an apology, new Zealand Maoris got a treaty, we did get an apology from govt back in 08, but not much has improved in other areas . The apology was " we SAY sorry", not " we ARE sorry, big difference, anyway I'm excited to learn about the Sami! :-)

Its important to any indigenous people to keep their culture alive (I'm Northern Arapaho from the Wind River Reservation) and its awesome to see how proud he is of his cultural identity. Hello from The northwest coast of turtle island, named "vancouver island, british columbia, canada" by the colonialist government (i serve no queen). I am a part of the Kwakwakawakw tribes (kwakwala speaking people). I really enjoyed this video and the interview associated. Thank you for sharing your good intentions through your music, it is inspiring! Indigenous people rising! Here we have the Tribal Canoe Journeys, where a coastal nation will host all surrounding nations (here there are many many distinct nations) to paddle their traditional canoes for feasting and cultural sharing. This year it is happening August 5th hosted by the Wei We kai and Wei We kum Nations in "Campbell River". Look it up!

As Maori indigenous to Aotearoa (New Zealand), we too recognise our tribal Waka (canoe) and we learn our Pepeha (Family history...kind of). We as a tribal people get taught our Maunga (mountain), Awa (river), Marae (meeting house) and Ancestral Waka (canoe).

I know a little about Maori culture, but this is one of the most stunning music videos I’ve ever seen; and the haka is one of the most powerful. The facial tattoos done on the women in this is awesome, as well, as I know it’s something that’s been frowned upon for many years thanks to foreign influence. Incredible video.

maseyez1 first of all if you don't understand something DONT COMMENT. "Twerking" is part of African culture and has been around the black diaspora cultures since the slaves were forced out of Africa, even men do it. It's nothing new. You only know about it because Miley Cyrus "brought it to the forefront". It has been around and will Continue to be around and don't make comments about it. Just like this video is about their culture, "twerking" comes from culture too, THE ORIGINAL culture and science will back that up for you.

Rin Smith If you read my comment from a happy place. You will see there is no denigration of the African culture or placing one culture over the other. It is was actually complimenting both. Your perception and that of the other lady above is misguided. Just like you assuming I am a dude.... calm down and stop being angry. I love the video for it's authenticity. Let's leave it there and allow these artists to bask in the glory of their new release. Peace and love.

I am Tongan with a lot of mix run thru my veins. But I have a few family members who is Maori and/or married a Maori, and cousins who are half. I love this video because Stan explains in another video, the importance of the Indigenous People all over the world to be proud of who they are because in reality we are all connected somehow. And that he emphasized how important for us to recognize ourselves and our strength to be recognized culturally and individually. We aren't bad people, push us and we can be just like anybody else, but we are still beautiful people!

This is a beautiful potrayal of my culture and of who we are as indigenous people. Our ancestors were strong and rich in ways the world today cannot understand and this video would do them proud. I especially love the powerful stance the women portray and it is sooo truthful, from a young women I felt and witnessed the strength of the women in my tribe, beautiful work Stan, so proud.

hatboxful sold? bullshit! the european discoverers came to establish whether there was a continent in the south pacific, drew maps, and decided to stay... or did u mean trade? of course they did, how else were the Maoris going to let them stick around. If they knew the shit stains Europeans would turn NZ in to 300 years later they wouldnt have traded and chased them back on their disease infested boats back to Europe!

It's so amazing to hear what he originally wanted to with this vid which was showing flags of every indigenous culture. I just want to say I absolutely loved that idea really wish you could've done what was originally in your plan to do Stan however this was still an amzing video. I'm not Maori but I have always been fascinated with the Maori culture and how strong and alive it is today in your people in this day and age.
