We who were his age or slightly younger at the time did love him. They put Wil in a ton of commercials aimed at us. River was just so much more of a consistently intense actor, though, even as a little kid. I think Wil got somewhat typecast as Wesley Crusher (I personally had zero problems with him in the role; the only complaint always seemed to be that the character was too Young to be that smart, which I found silly. But fanboys used it against him.) River on the other hand was cast in a lot of dramatic acting in "serious" films (science fiction was definitely not as respected then as it is now. For example, Patrick Stewart was repeatedly told ST:TNG would ruin his career) . Also, I have to say, River never outgrowing his angelic-child look even into his 20s was definitely a factor.

@@conkyvsricki4710 True, but consider, for example, that scene where Gordy asks, why did Denny have to die, and says it should have been me, and my dad hates me. Wil"s doing all the emoting there. River's just reacting. Yet people seem to remember River's great acting in this film and take Wil's equally great performance for granted. The truth is, all four kids are superb.

Wil Wheaton is considered the _Star_ of this film, and people recognized it when it was released. People _still_ feel that way, but "newbies" think it's "River Phoenix", because they saw the movie _after_ he died, but, no, MOST people to this day consider Wil's performance to be one of the best in Hollywood history, and accept that he is the _Star_ of this film.

Every man has his own personal version of "Stand By Me". In my case, among my group of beloved friends, two died and the third became a successful businessman. When we were 15, we were inseparable. Now, 25 years later, nothing would bring me more joy than to spend just one more day together. Your friends from that age are everything. This movie captures that perfectly.

Look into what Wil Wheaton said about his time as a child actor, it’s saddening. He channeled his real issues with his parents into this role and that’s why he felt so sincere. It’s a miracle he turned into a genuinely good adult, knowing that Hollywood and his family tried to chew him up and spit him out.

There’s an HBO documentary called “Showbiz Kids” that includes interviews from a number of popular child actors and actresses, including Wheaton, and the first thing he said is that acting was never his idea, it was his mother’s. She sent him to work in commercials at 8 years old, and it was a nasty environment. Stand By Me for him was the first time when a director went out of his way to communicate with young people, and get the kids to get to know each other before filming began, and IMO it paid off.

River Phoenix [Chris] may have received multiple Oscars by now if he had lived [RIP], but his brother Joaquin Phoenix [used to be Leaf Phoenix] got it instead. Wil Wheaton [Gordie LaChance] and Jerry O'Connell [Verne] both worked in the small screen. Corey Feldman [Teddy Duchamp] co-starred in a few films. I grew up in a fairly rural Welsh mining village and apart from a video rental shop that had an arcade for rainy days we spent our time exploring the hills, mountains , woods and rivers that surrounded us. Then i saw your guys reaction and realised that the new generation are not so different to us and even though you guys got much better video games, smartphones and the internet we BOTH had remarkably similar upbringings to kids in the 50's and can relate 100% to them. RIP River Phoenix, i have no idea how many oscars he would have won at this point but this film will forever cement his legacy as a legend taken too soon

That whole "trains take a half a mile to stop" myth applies more to the mile-long behemoths moving at FRA-mandated maximum speed. The train in the movie consisted a locomotive, a tender and four cars moving about 20 mph. It would have had no trouble stopping. I personally think the engineer of that train just wanted to screw with those kids for trespassing on railroad property. He ran the train fast enough to scare them, but slow enough to let them clear the bridge.

I saw it with my two best friends one the same age as me and the other a couple years older. Not only that, but my friend the same age, he looked EXACTLY like Vern. I mean exactly down to the buzz haircut and rosy cheeks. Even back then the last line in Gordy's book registered with me... "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, who does?" I think that quote registered with me even then. Maybe I cherished and savored those times just a little bit more because it stayed with me so strongly. Too bad that they missed the entire opening scene because they were doing that, because they would've understood why Richard Dreyfuss's character was so sad -- the headline of the newspaper announcing Chris Chambers' death. It was important and it looked like they missed the entire thing. Still, fun review

@@robertmccauley754 I see your view. But...it seems to me that it's a full circle kind of thing. The beginning whets your appetite to know what happened. The ending resolves the question, closing the circle. The entire movie is the middle, the story explaining everything that happened and why it's important to Gordon. Yeah, you can argue that it's better not to know why adult Gordy is sad by the headline, and not to know who Chris Chambers is at this time; but then, why not start with the story itself and leave the beginning out? There's a reason for having it there. It's just my opinion, though. haha

I absolutely love this film, and can’t think of a better ‘coming of age’ movie. As many people have satiated here, we ALL have had that ‘Stand By Me’ moment, where the veil of blind trust was lifted, and we saw the world for what it is. For me, it was my Brother Tommy’s sudden death. The chaos it threw the family into, never experiencing grief, and now knowing it tragically and intimately.

This is one of my favorite 80's movies ever made. The scene where Chris and Gordie are talking about the milk money incident, River Phoenix was actually crying. Rob Reiner, the director, had asked him what was something personal that had hurt him. The train dodge scene on the bridge, Rob had to scream at Wil and Jerry to get them right for the part, but he wasn't doing it to be mean to them.

17:38 Trains like that can't just automatically slow down. Trains take forever to slow down, that is why there are so many train related deaths. Not like a car were you can just suddenly stop. You can hear the conductor blowing his horn\whistle. They were obviously trying to slow and avoid the kids, but there is only so much they can do.
