Julian Clary was a lot braver for his time. I don’t think that anyone could be that brave again because Julian helped to clear the path. Some people might find Joe, Graham Norton, Alan Carr etc funnier but they’re doing all of that in a much more tolerant comedy ecosystem than Clary was faced with when he started on TV. Of course there was plenty that predated Clary outside of TV, but he made the transition from the camp weak limp-wristed John Inman / Larry Grayson types to unapologetic and pervy gays in all their filthy glory.
@al2011036 ай бұрын
I think there were two distinct aspect to Clary's act which separated him from those who had come before. One thing was the way he would deliver his innuendo style of comedy. It was so flat. Almost like "this is what you expect me to do, this is what you want, so here you are" - you know? Not saying that's how he felt. Just that style. He was also very clever with it. The other thing was the way in which he would turn his ascerbic wit on the audience. "I don't know what you're laughing at, what are you wearing? I remember that shirt when it was a deckchair....in Rhyll" He was (and still is) hilarious. And almost terrifying. And a bit beautiful. I was lucky enough to see him live a couple of times back when he was the Joan Collins Fan Club with Fanny the Wonder Dog. Twas a good time for comedy!

Well, I suppose if a comedian is being 'cancelled' for telling jokes which are derogatory and people don't like it that is the market speaking. Entertainers are beholden to audiences to want to attend and pay to see their shows. If people don't like the show enough to buy tickets or albums or whatever then the show just is not that good. I hardly think it is a tragedy that there is not as much of a market for the Andrew Dice Clays of the world...because he was never very funny and relied on punching down which doesn't float my boat. No one has cancelled Doug Stanhope or Jim Jeffries for instance. Both of those comics do a lot of material around all kinds of contentious topics. They haven't been cancelled because they bring something fresh and interesting and funny to those subjects.

That’s not how I read what he said at all. It seems more like he wants people to put some effort in to their comedy. For a lot of people, their style of comedy is just ‘the punchline is racism’ or whatever. There’s no clever subversion of expectations, no real thought to it. Just shock factor for shock factor’s sake. That just strikes me as lazy. I mean, Joe is pretty edgy himself in his comedy, so if that was what you took from what he said, would that not basically mean he would have to change his entire career?

@@ej5677 No, I'm a fan of his have been for years, he's absolutely welcome to do his comedy and I hope he continues, but he's saying his type of comedy should be the standard and other comedy should be the niche, again, you don't come in and demand the origin changes to make room for the subgenre. Music, movies, games ect. Any form of creative expression while subversion and sub branches are welcome not at the cost of the original. He's also as you stated implying standard comedy is lazy, heavily implied Dave Chappelles comedy was lazy which if anyone agrees with.. doesn't know or respect the art of comedy As for their careers, being cancelled doesn't necessarily mean forever. Being cancelled can be any career effecting ramifications. Cancel culture itself I can't understand how it can legally exist. People are often cancelled over things that are more than legal. @@Ascendancy_5566 Again, not what I read into what he said, but it’s good to get a different perspective. I just kinda don’t agree that he’s arguing for any major overhaul to comedy as an art form when frankly most comedy is dark or edgy. The slapstick or wholesome comedy styles are certainly out there, but a lot of it is certainly on the adult side. To be clear, I love dark humour that pushes boundaries. As long as it’s clever and not done just for the sake of it. I’m not saying people don’t have the right to make pure shock factor comedy and I don’t believe it would be right to socially outlaw that kind of thing. I don’t think anyone would seriously argue chapelle’s comedy is lazy. His bits on trans people which got a lot of attention were mean spirited. But again, his right to say what he thinks, even though it comes off as weaponised comedy. Genuine question, how do you personally differentiate between consequences for actions and simple online criticism? At least to me, the whole ‘cancel culture’ thing is a boogeyman. It makes news when some people get offended or outraged online. The media picks it up, usually including a few choice tweets or comments in the article. Given how social media spreads things like wildfire, it kinda seems to me that making mountains out of molehills on twitter is seen as cancelling. But like, if their career hasn’t been affected long term, how have they been cancelled? Not saying I agree with people dogpiling on someone online, it’s gross. I used to love him if im honest, but he truly makes me sick now. His complete ideological capture and celebration of not cancel culture, but directed attacks on free speech and free exp[session. And you think he would know about that, wouldn't you?? He is the biggest disappointment, and he now scares me with his willing gleefulness at the woke ideological plague that has ripped through society. Just so sad to see

Mate calm down 😅 society always moves forward. There was people talking like this when women got the vote, or when brown ppl were allowed to own property x should we never evolve? Go back to minstrel shows , "Irish are dumb" jokes ? Or are those things tired stereotypes and misinformation that we as a culture know better than now? Therfore killing the "comedy" of those things?

Seriously? You’re so fu*cking fragile you can’t bear NOT hearing people spew hate at already denigrated groups? It must really hurt you to see people stick up for the most abused factions of society. How unfair of them to put someone’s health and safety over your sense of humor.

Saw a woke comedian the other day making the most vile, unfunny "jokes"about my Catholic religion. No cancel there, we just have to suck it up
@jbrock81297 ай бұрын
Was it about the church covering up all those priests being pedos? Because that wasn’t a comedian, that was just the news.
