This is so stupid. Hispanic is a large blanket identifier and most Hispanics want people to recognize that to be Puerto Rican is very different than being Mexican, or Dominican, or from Guatemala. They all belong to the Hispanic race but society, particularly western society (I.e. whites) have a history of washing out the differences in different Hispanic cultures because they all speak “Spanish.” Same with Asians, Asians are very big on letting you know they are Chinese and not Vietnamese; or Japanese and not Filipino. Africans will make a similar distinction between African Americans or Afro Caribbean groups. White people are truly the only race that is okay with treating their specific, smaller niche cultural groups and or nationalities as an extension of their white identity, rather than their whole identity. And a lot of that has to do with how powerful white privilege and colonial has been for many whites, be it in America or Europe, whereas most blacks, Asians and Hispanics belonged to smaller tribes and communities that spoke various dialects and formed various traditions.
