So, I've got to know how you figured out how much weight the roof mount system could hold on the Subaru. All I find specs on is the weight limit of the OEM crossbars...

Randall: I'm no expert and what I say here is not advice and you need to make your own determinations... A standard Yakima rack holds about 150lb. Remember, you need to look at dynamic load weight, not static. Static is when the car is sitting still and dynamic is when it is moving and comes to an abrupt stop... how much weight can the rack hold in that situation without ripping off the roof. Static is much, much higher...when the car is sitting still... My determination was that if I flipped the car, more than likely the weight of the car would totally crush me inside if the car was not designed to hold up at least a good portion of that weight which was significantly more weight than my tent on the roof. So, I looked at Dynamic load weight. I gave it a try and so far the rack and the tent are and have remained totally and completely solid on the roof at high speeds and even in fast move abouts on the streets. I inspect it regularly because I am still assessing the set-up myself. But, so far so good. My biggest gripe is the plastic rails Subaru installs. I would rather have had the flat rails that come on the Touring model so the Yakima was sitting right on the roof.

Note also that when I took my 13,000 mile 9-month overland North America trip with my lifted Rubicon which had a black hard top (I think fiberglass) I actually mounted a Yakima rack right to the roof by drilling holes in the roof and adding Yakima Landing Pads with no other support. I loaded it with a Yakima skybox and about 150 pounds of gear and then added two mountain bikes up there as well. Everyone said don't do it. I did. And It was up there for all 13,000 miles and didn't budge. So, I am no stranger to 'giving it a try'. You might not be that guy.

4XPEDITION, yes, very good analogy. That makes sense. Surely a Subaru engineer somewhere knows the exact number for this though... 😉
