Well Kintaro is one of my favorites, it's so sad, and it's at the core of the series. Which is Context. It's one of the first really well handled arcs where the author mixes comedy and tragedy together. Of course the old guy is nasty, of course the old dog is nasty, we only know the face they show others. It isn't until the last few flashbacks that we are given the context. The entire show is like this. People with rough faces, pushing others away for personal reasons, always hiding their own truths. It also isn't a show about fights and battles. There is no powerscaling here. It's slice of life, it's about life being weird. Yes, it has some of the best fights in anime, and that is largely Because it doesn't have strange powers and instead relies on extremely good choreography to show the skill and thoughts of the fighters, without having to explain anything. But none of that is the point of the show, the fights happen as a natural outcome of the character's individual motivations. (I know it's strange to talk about that on the Ghost Ryokan arc which was a straight reference to Jojo and actually did have temporary weird powers because they were goofing on Jojo) Speaking of Jojo reference the "Cursed" thing is a reference to a band in Japan, they dress up like that, which is Sorachi just doing the same thing Jojo does with all the band references.
