🇬🇷 In this slightly different episode we talk about Pontic Greek (or Romeyka), one of the most melodic Greek dialects.
🙁Today, the language is endangered, with only a few thousand speakers remaining. Ιt is still spoken in pockets of the Pontus, mostly by Pontic Greeks in the eastern districts of Trabzon Province.
Losing dialects means losing a valuable part of our cultural heritage and identity, as well as the wealth of knowledge and understanding that they bring.
The least we can do as Glossonauts is to capture this beautiful dialect and keep it alive.
🙏Many thanks to our good friend Okan for his help in creating this special episode. A second part will follow.

That's not "standard" Pontic Greek but the Of(Όφις) sub-dialect that is spoken in the villages of Caykara (Κατωχώρι). There are significant differences with the sub-dialects that are spoken in Greece and former Soviet Union. Even though a small minority that had origin from that region also spoke that sub-dialect but later assimilated by the speakers of other sub-dialects. In the sub-dialects (Trapezundian sub-dialect) that are more common in Greece those phrases are said in this way: -Γεια σου, ντ' έφτας; -Πως ακούς;/Ποιον εν το όνεμα σ'; -Απόθεν είσαι; -Το ραshίν -Τ'εμέτερον τ' οσπίτ'. -Το παιδίν/ το χάταλον -Η ώραν ποσόν εν; -Η φορφάκα -Το ότιν -Καλαchέβω Ελλενικά -Θέλω ένα καβέ χωρίς ζάχαρη

been watching las meron videos for som time, and i never heard anyone from pontus, saying "to gardeli" to say child, they say pedia if its a man and khoritza if its a girl. also say tonemas pos en when asking the name or apothen ise asking where they from. this must be a very specific and distant dialect of romeyka.

What is the difference between "Pontic Greek" and "Romeyka"?

There isn’t. Romeyka is the old term that’s still used by Islamized Greeks in Pontos

@@TheofilosMouratidis In the first half of the 19th century Christian Pontic Greeks established schools, where the teachers would teach in 'Modern Greek'. However, the Muslim Pontic Greeks only established schools in the second half of the 19th century, and there they taught in the local dialect 'Romeyka'. The Christians were exchanged to Greece in 1920s and their language became even more assimilated to Modern Greek, but the Muslims kept educating in Pontic Greek until the 1960s, when their 'illegal' highland schools were shut down by the nationalists. So that is why for most Christian Pontic Greeks, Romeyka from eastern Trabzon sounds different. It is even more archaic, as it was not influenced by modern Greek at all. Among the first generation Pontians in Greece, this old dialect was still present to some degree, and it could be understood by them more easily. Also there was a small Christian minority in the Of/Çaykara region, that settled in the village Nea Trapezounta. Their dialect is very close to the one spoken by Muslim Greeks.

What does ντ' mean on its own? Is it an abbreviation of something?
@mareksagrak9527
@mareksagrak9527 Ай бұрын
Yes, it's an abbreviation of ντο (doh) - "what?", an interrogative. It's not exclusively Pontic, it occured in some other Greek dialects as well. As far as I know it origins from the phrase (τι εί)ν' (αυ)τό "what is that?". The standard modern Greek word for "what?" is "τι"
