At one point, the camera cuts away while they're together at Mai's house late at night. When the show returns to their side of the story the next morning, Zuko is still there, lounging on her couch, that is in her bedroom, with a badly messed up head of hair. And she's making him tea. The show wasn't necessarily all in the span of a single summer. It was closer to around 9 months. Aang met Roku on the Winter Solstice, and was told to master the elements by Summer's end. So he had from the first day of winter to the last day of summer

I didn’t realize this the first time around, but it actually does make sense that Azula was invited to the war room but Zuko wasn’t - besides Azula, we don’t see any women holding positions of power in the fire nation military, so she’s probably a special case. For a second-born princess, it probably is outside of the norm that she would be invited, however for Azula who is a war prodigy an exception is made, and she gets invited specially. Zuko on the other hand is a male in the fire nation royal family, plus is now once again heir apparent since he’s older (side note - I wonder if Ozai would honor this birthright slash if Azula had any plans to get rid of Zuko because of this?). Of course Zuko, as the firstborn son of the firelord, would be expected in the war room, but for Azula it’s not a given.

Interesting, I have never thought about it. I always looked at it as either a ploy by Ozai to see if Zuko would act out of turn by just showing up or Zuko's invitation got lost in delivery.

That's a good question. I think Azula would have manipulated Zuko in some way. "Allowing" him to be Firelord, but acting as his advisor (like the Blue Dragon from the nightmare he had during his fever). Now I want an alternate universe fanfic where Azula becomes a war General and has the military on her side, so there's always the threat of a coup hanging over Zuko' head as he tries to be a good ruler. That sounds like a nightmare.

The show is actually not happening in one summer. It starts sometime in winter (in season 1 episode 7 they mention the winter solstice) and ends at the end of summer. So they got half a year. Still a very short time, especially to master all 4 elements (which took Roku 12 years).

At the end of the day though, Aang didn't fully "master" all 4 elements. He just kinda became proficient enough at them. Remember the final fight, Aang is in the Avatar State the whole time. We actually don't know how many years it took for Aang to fully entirely master all the elements.

Actually, when aang is found in the iceberg, it's just before winter. That's why episodes 7 & 8 of book 1 is called the winter solstice. Book 2 was spring, that's why aang said appa was shedding. Book 3 is summer. And sozin's comet comes at the end of summer. So basically, 9 months for the entire journey.

I really love Zuko in this episode. All along, the idea of breaking with the Fire Nation, has been something that Iroh has tried to force upon him. Iroh has tried to get Zuko to see that there are other paths for him, but Zuko has resisted it because he so fiercely believed in his place in his nation and his family, and in his Fire Lord. This is the episode where he gets everything. He has a girl who loves him, Azula seems to be getting along with him, he is respected and loved by his people and Ozai wants him at his right hand. Zuko realises this isn't who he wants to be, and it's a decision he makes all by himself, and I respect him all the more for it.

As others have pointed out, the show actually happens closer to around a 9 month period, but there's actually a little more to it, each book matches up with a season as well as an element. In Book 1 the winter solstice happens several episodes in and in Book 2 when Appa is shedding Aang mentions that it's spring, then the comet comes at the end of summer. You also see it with Katara and Sokka's clothes, in Book 1 (Winter) Sokka and Katara wear warmer clothes that cover them up, then in Book 2 they change to short sleeves because it's getting warmer. There's also a correspondence with the elements Winter is water and corresponds with Book 1, Spring is earth and corresponds with Book 2, Summer is fire and corresponds with Book 3. That leaves Fall for Air and we start the show sometime toward the beginning of Winter with Aang already an airbending master so fall is already done. Winter (Water) -> Spring (Earth) -> Summer (Fire) -> Fall (Air) corresponds with the avatar cycle and the books of the show and the changing of the seasons all in the correct order, and you may have also noticed that matches exactly with the song Iroh sings towards the end of Book 1: "Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall - Four Seasons, Four Loves".

Just to clarify guys, this series is not 1 summer. In season 1 there is the Winter Solstice and you "Avatar and the Fire Lord" takes place on the summer solstice. These are 6 months apart, so this series is likely from ~November until ~July
