great seeing Thunder again. Love his markings and color. I don't know I will ever have a dog on a treadmill but this teaches a lot more than that like identifying when it is time to stop. Reading the dog to know when he is mentally beat versus physically beat. Also, I never stopped to look at the normal gate of a dog and how all fours are supposed to look when a dog is jogging at a comfortable gate.

I have the Canine Athlete Slats Mill. I love it. I looked for the $50 Craigslist treadmill but couldn't find one but I did find the Slats Mill so snapped it up. I am very pleased with it. It's not motorized which I like. My Milo absolutely loves it. He jumps on and asks to be run. I posted a short video to a GSP group on Facebook and boy did the hate come out. Comments were "Lazy dog owner" , "Your torturing him" and worse. The ignorance was crazy. Thanks for sharing quality content.

It’s amazing to me, people think if you don’t sacrifice every spare minute of time to exercise your dog outside on a trail or in a park, you’re lazy. We have lives. We work. We have families. We have other hobbies. There are only so many hours in the day... at LEAST the dog is getting exercised. If you care enough to invest in a treadmill for them, you’re not lazy.

I actually have one of these treadmills, a bit older model, which I have not used enough. I was about to sell it, since my 3 dogs have not been very comfortable on it, but I came across your video and I decided to give this training method a try. I also previously never used the bar that they attach to. I just used a leash that I held. Wow! What a difference! I got all three of my dogs somewhat comfortable on it at a walk right off the bat, using your method here and using the bar with a short lead attached to it overhead. I can't believe it! I will now keep my treadmill and see if I can gradually work my dogs up to being more comfortable on it and to going up to a trot! I did sessions that seemed just long enough to not overwhelm each of them - 8 minutes for my youngest dog, 3 minutes for my somewhat skittish dog (she started to pant, so I stopped) and 5 minutes for my third dog. Thank you so much! I think this should be great for mental exercise and hopefully also for conditioning, once I can work them up to trotting. I did just a slow to medium walk for their first "relearning" sessions today. My dogs are Eurohounds (sprint racing sled dogs). Awesome!

Depends on the severity. But utilizing a frozen bird for reps can slow the crunching!

YAWA Question: My goal with training my GSP will be to have a running buddy. She’s only a puppy right now, so we’re staring with the basics with particular emphasis on heel, woah, and recall. I want to be consistent with my expectations of her when we’re running together (aka match my pace and heel) but sometimes on mountain trails it’s not physically possible to be side by side. How would you suggest I handle this in my training? I’m not trying to get tangled up in a leash with a dog attached running full speed up/down a mountain 😅 thank you for your help!
