Hi Rachit. I would be grateful if Surag or you could answer the below questions: As Surag mentioned he spent from his own pocket for initial 3 to 4 months of his master's course. Could you please let me know roughly how much did he have to spend before getting the scholarship? Also what is the process of getting a scholarship because there can be several students who would want to be a TA in a particular course then how does the professor chose the TA in this case? What is the difference in the technical expertise obtained by a student pursuing MS from IITs and a student pursuing MS from Institutes like Stanford? How can one bridge the gap, if any? In terms of breakeven point which is more beneficial pursuing MS from top 5 IIT's and getting placed in India or getting placed in US after pursuing MS from institutes like Stanford or Harvard. Considering cost of living in US is much higher than in India say for a city like Bangalore and that a student in IIT would be getting a stipend right from his first month of joining the course so there is minimal expenditure from the student's pocket.

1. Stanford MSCS tuition + living costs were about $15,000 for one quarter in 2017-18. Around $50,000 for 3 quarters. People usually finish in 5-6 quarters. 2. CS usually has a lot of vacancies for TAships. There is a formal process to apply, which usually favours students who have taken that class before. Some classes are offered every quarter and you can take them first and apply to TA next quarter onwards. Most MSCS students got a TAship by beginning of 2nd year latest. For RAships, you need to contact a professor with whom you wish to work, and usually funding is worked out on a case-by-case situation, but most likely you'll have to spend a quarter or two without pay. 3. Not much of a technical difference especially for CS. IITs have quite good courses in CS for the most part, and the rest can be self-taught. MS in the US is mostly about proximity to tech hubs and a way to get into the US job system. 4. Depends on a lot of factors. Speaking for Stanford, almost everyone in my MSCS cohort got a summer internship, and I'd guess that paid them $20k for the summer, so that offsets some of the tuition. As for jobs, most folks end up with a job in the $130-200k range (including stock options). In the Bay Area one can expect to spend $30-40k annually on living expenses (without living frugally). Don't know much about salaries in India sorry.

@@suragnair8244 Thanks for the wonderful answer, I have some few query, I am currently working as a data scientist in a small startup with a BTech degree from Tier 3 college, do you feel that Masters/PhD is an absolute mandatory requirement for ML/DS related roles, I have been looking at job descriptions and mostly they ask for years of experience and education shows up in preferred section. I wanted to know what all job families are there at FAANG? Is Applied Scientist and Research Scientist separate roles or are they the same? Cause I was told that only Research Scientist roles require PhD and publication at top conferences like NIPS etc Is it True that FAANG companies only care if your publication comes from Top Tier conferences?

don't insult Stanford by writing "Stanford vs IITs" no doubt some IITians are good for their talent and only the cream part get admission in top IITs but have been through SEE and NPTEL clear winner is Stanford. Very few professors at IITs is good and also not as like Stanford professors. For international students getting into stanford is not guaranteed. Its stanford that helped creating brilliant startups and also some of the greatest mind of the tech worlds.

@@yashrajpardeshi1111 Definitely, if you have a good enough reason and motivation for it. Also, you should be able to articulate your reasons and motivation impressively (read honestly) in your essays to the universities you're going to apply to. This would help you secure admission in a decent university for your graduate studies. Also, if you keep moving in the direction of what you want, always choosing the fork in the road that is closest to the compass heading of your passions, I think you have the best chance of getting there.
