The Majorana fermion is a hypothetical fermionic particle which is its own anti-particle. Intense research efforts focus on its experimental observation as a fundamental particlein high energy physics and as a quasi-particle in condensed matter systems. Professor Zhang discusses the theoretical prediction and the experimental discovery of the chiral Majorana fermion in a topological state of quantum matter.

I'm proud of how he has broken this down step by step, presenting a beautiful mathematical equation and explanation to what I research on a daily basis. This is awesome, and worth sharing around the world. I believe we can go much farther...

What a pity he passed away so suddenly! I heard the bad news just after watching this lecture.

In my understanding, this Majorana fermion (mode) is only quasiparticles (or some collective excitation that shows the Majorana properties) in condensed matter physics, not real particles in high energy physics. The former helps us to realize some direct application (e.g. Topological Quantum Computer) in the future; the latter mostly helps us to get deeper understanding of the universe , nature, space and time, matter and force etc. And this is also a collaboration of different groups of theoretical physicists and experimental physicists, and also the previous theoretical and experimental works of many others. Anyway it is a breakthrough and congrats!

Zhang died in San Francisco on December 1, 2018, at the age of 55, in an apparent suicide. His family said in a statement that he died "after fighting a battle with depression."

the fact that the spin of all the particlesr keep one direction on the electrons, and the antimatetter keep the oposite... it 's not an evidence of the influence of the quantum oscilation on this spin, movment and angular momentum in the matter? can this posible quantum oscilation efect in the matter, explain the lack of antimatter in the universe? ...when someting is oscilating, justa one directions must be taken for the particules!
