Good gin that but, I recommend Gordons. I know it's bottom shelf but if you've tried it you know it's really good. Not to flashy, not to out there just good gin. And yes gin is what goes in a Martini. That is a vodka martini i believe.

Stanley Tucci can even make cold watered down vodka look sexy. At least he got the stirring right, though the point of stirring is to preserve flavor... of which there's none if you poured all the vermouth out and just have chilled vodka in there. Vodka has no flavor, so it makes sense that just coating the ice is enough to flavor the drink. This is probably good practice if you're using junk vermouth, but Dolin is good and should never be poured into the sink like that. Here's a better Martini using gin, not vodka, and enough good vermouth to make a real difference: 2 oz. gin (not vodka... most of the flavor comes from this so use whichever you like best) 3/4 oz. dry vermouth (Martini is OK but Dolin or Noilly Prat are better) 2 dashes orange bitters (optional, but a good one) lemon peel Pour gin, vermouth (and bitters) into a mixing glass. Fill with ice. Stir gently for long enough to make the outside of the glass cold. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Fold the lemon peel to spray the oils over the glass (don't rub) and drop it in to garnish. Drink up. You're welcome.

Hey, for you first timers, skip the vodka and use gin. That's a real martini. But be prepared, gin is a totally different styled spirit. It's infused with herbs, so it's very grassy. When you drink a martini, you're looking for a summery, fresh cut lawn kind of flavor. In the winter, a martini is a reminder of springs that have passed and springs to come. You've been warned.
