I used to teach English to those whom we must now call international students. I can assure you that they would have coped far better with Stanley Unwin's utterances than with the actual exams they sat.

I remember as a nipper finding the good professor's talks simultaneously entirely clear and utterly incomprehensible. I later had the same experience when studying continental philosophy, and, more recently, its poisonous spawn critical theory.

I actually heard him talking normal English on 'Just A Minute' nobody interrupted him, such was his stature, not even Kenneth Williams, another genius of the English language with his 'Polari' on 'Round The Horn'.

He was so familiar with his own vocabulary that he could extemporise in any situation. But he was meticulous about continuity, so once he had it down, he could do the same spiel again and again.
