Building a Big Staircase over a landscape retaining wall & connecting it with a bridge to a patio

We had a Problem- No access through a retaining wall. So with some basic woodworking, a big outdoor staircase & a wood bridge we came up with a way to go right over the wall and connect into the patio.

he did a great job on the stairs, however it sticks out like a sore thumb and detracts from the natural beauty of the stone walls, I think you would have had a better outcome if you had dismantled part of the wall and ran the stairs through it, like you mentioned.

He did a great job on the stairs. I wish more people cared about their work like he does. That said, they just look out of place. Built in steps or none at all would have been my choice. Unless it is an incredibly heavy foot traffic area (if it is, how were the stairs missed?), I would keep the beauty of the landscaping and just walk to the end of the wall and go up the hill.

Because it was an after thought and the more Economical way to go. I would love to be paid to make it look like it's not an after thought but this gives the customer, who is writing the check, an option for the same end goal.

Even if it was an after thought you don't have to make it look like an after thought. But of course it costs more money it also just looks like a cheap fix too. Idk maybe a really nice paint job would change my mind but it doesn't look great.

What I learned is that having a trusted partner like Frankie on the team is a rare and precious commodity. I like his work ethic and methodology. That said, I agree with you that going "through" the boulders would look much better. However, it still looks pretty good to me, and should definitely help you sell the house. ... and the cordless Milwaukee skill-saw is new to me, and very dang impressive.

I think it turned out good. Landscaping with a couple of large shrubs on either side will help it nestle right in there and come together. What you built is what we see a lot of on lake front properties. It's usually an afterthought.

Beautiful job for an add on, like you say, If you would have known ahead of time, there are a few little things that may have been better. I do like how it was tucked backed out of the driveway as much as possible so a snowplow would not clip the edge and tear the hell out of it! Great Job Frankie!! You hit it out of the park in my book !

I like it for some aspects but don't for others. I like it because it looks good and is easier to construct. On the other hand I like building steps through the landscape because when you walk up those stair you feel more part of it than a god looking over your creation. Also ease of maintaining and longevity.

This is a missed opportunity to do something amazing. And I can't imagine Frankie walking away from that job with any sense of pride in his craftsmanship. I enjoy watching your landscaping videos because I can see your professionalism. When it comes to carpentry work, you need to find someone equally suited to be on your channel. I get the product advertising but if you are going to do that show me quilty work, built with these tools.

I like the concept of Incorporating the stairs into the 2 boulder retaining walls. I would blend better and give you access to the lower terrace.

in my home state, Washington state, things are always wet. If they were built into the hill, moving the rocks, the wood would rot out too fast. If stone was used for stairs, it would get mossy and slippery. Depending on the area and weather conditions. I like the idea. When you explained it, I would not have thought it would look that nice.

I think only because they are kinda unique, and so well built, they actually work, a little imposing but the design works. Now treat the crap out of the boards, if for nothing else to darken them up just a little bit. Step lights would also add to it.

Stan the man! It works and frankie did a great job but it takes away from your outrageous stone walls. Your walls look great and I hate to see them covered over with the stairs. I would probably stain the stairs down to a light brown to lose some of the contrast. I have a construction trailer packed with all the Brands (Dewalt, Makita, Bosch etc..) but the Milwaukee M18 line kicks ass!!!! got them all except the miter box, and they beat the others down solidly. Great work Stan. Thanks for your real, no bullshit, cut to the chase approach. Go easy with those forehead slaps, ya might knock something loose madsman.. Merry Christmas if ya catch the post!

Nice work!! What a carpenter! No doubt that will stand the test of time. It does look like a bit of an after thought but I think it was the best and most efficient route to go. How many man hours and materials do you have into this? It would seem to be cheaper than building out stone returns. Would stone steps really add that much more value to the home? I feel this showcases your knowledge of the industry and also showcases the fine craftsmanship Frankie demonstrated.

Pressure treated wood shrinks as it dries out, meaning those gaps that are in between the boards are gonna be huge.

Love the 45 degree posts at the bottom. I would never have thought of that. No need for posts at the bottom stairs. Only problem I have is the grass under the bridge, how do you mow it?

I believe doing it this way may be better in terms of prevention of erosion. Your Retaining wall is there for a reason, so keeping that retaining wall fully intact is going to hold back whatever it is the best. This also keeps your staircase out of the dirt and if one of the projects experiences failure you shouldn't have to worry about the other.

It’s a nice set or stairs and walk way, personally I would have put them off off to the side instead of the middle now when it’s time you mow the grass on the right hand side you’ll have to lift a lawn mower up and down over the rock wall, I would have also got a permit and y’d it off and hooked it to the deck aswell as a walk way to the back door, just my two cents
