Hi Stan, One very hot summer I built a 35 foot retaining wall with those stepped interlocking blocks. The wall was five courses high and the blocks were very heavy. I figured I'd set them all in place and then backfill. I think you can guess what's coming. As I placed the last block the entire wall collapsed in a cascading motion, like dominos! I yelled to my wife, "Who's the engineer on this job!" Since the blocks were interlocking I had to reset EVERY SINGLE ONE!!! LOL Shalom/gw PS I backfilled as I went the second time.

I’ve leaned a lot watching your videos. Curious about your opinion on bagged concrete use, I see a lot of those around drainage pipes and some yard retaining walls. In my case I have undeveloped land with wash outs and erosion. Thought of using concrete bags or even burlap bags filled with dirt to control the runoff. On a tight budget and it’s all DIY here, don’t want to waste time, effort and money. Thanks for the videos.

Great video - especially like seeing the ‘before’ and how you guys solve the problem and work together to rebuild it to better conditions. One obvious minor eyesore……Why on earth did the homeowner choose the tan color instead of a cool gray? Is there a homeowner plan to repaint the entire house, including the brick wall of the basement, in warmer, neutral tan, brown, and creamy white colors? Seems like they need a color consultant.
@pharpester Жыл бұрын
Do you ever use geotextile fabrics. Is there particular situations that you use it or drainage tile? I ask because it appears there was hydrostatic pressure that moved this wall out. I see you used the trainer stone, but won’t it eventually become full of dirt and the push the wall over again?

@trevorburton2718 Жыл бұрын
@@Dirtmonkey Oh really? What a shame I think the video where you drove the ventrac on their testing hill showed how safe they really are on slopes. Maybe they have a new health and safety man that thinks you are a tad dangerous when testing. I see bobcat has bought out Steiner mowers and may be producing their own version of the ventrac system. Maybe contact bobcat.

My 3 foot tall wall settled some the first 3 years. So if you look for it you can see that it is slightly wavy. In the last decade is has not moved an inch. Is that now self compacted. Or is it possible it will start moving again and eventually fail. We put down 3 inches of angular rock.

Hey from the UK Stan! Firstly I just want to say thank you for the content. Always enjoy your videos from the trade shows to the construction! Two questions for you. 1. Why do you in America do almost all of your retaining wall with interlocking block? Over here in the UK we build them by hand and put mortar in between creating one solid unit compared to your individual block method. Is it because its quicker and easier or is it to do with the freeze thaw you get over there? 2. I understand why you put clean stone behind the wall to act as drainage but you don't wrap it with a membrane? which over the years will lead to sediments transitioning through the stones and silt collecting at the base of the wall which would then create a problem. If you could go over that in the next video or even a reply would be interested to know! Again love the videos. Thanks Ollie
@Dirtmonkey Жыл бұрын
no membrane because that will clog and create hydrostatic hot spots-or potential blowout. We also don't use mortar because the walls "float" with the freeze thaw cycle and it it seems to work good.
