Around the Verse explores the art and tech behind the score for Squadron 42. Composer Geoff Zanelli (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Pacific, Outlander) walks us through his process, while Ross Tregenza and Lee Banyard discuss the technical challenges for the CIG Audio team. Sandi Gardiner and Josh Herman host this week’s episode, which also includes an update with Brian Chambers from Foundry 42 in Germany. Learn more at robertsspacein...

It saddens me that music doesn't seem to carry a lot of weight with folks in the comments. Music is such an underappreciated part of games, and movies for that matter. I enjoyed every minute of this.

I wholeheartedly agree. Music plays an important part in Star Citizen. People seriously need to appreciate that. I wish more people would enjoy music that sets the mood for various situations in the 'Verse from fighting to just flying casually.

I agree but they hit the nail on the head here. I typically start all games with the music on but on most games I eventually turn it off if it is replaying the same music over-and-over or when it isn't aligned with the "mood" of what I'm doing in game.

GibsonGaming "most gamers turn off the music" and 88.25% of statistics are made up on the spot! Rubbish, just complete nonsense. Take a poll for that did we, or maybe a an online survey... oh no! Your just made it up to support your point of view.

GibsonGaming most gamers who play esports titles maybe? To chat with teammates play with music off... And they do form a significant part of the population. This game however is meant to be atmospheric like other single player titles so... Music will play a big part in making the sound environment. Lol player right here signing out..

The music is one of the best parts of any piece of media. This is important, and I love it so much. Halo wouldn't be whole without the music. No movie would be. No game. This especially needs good music, and I love what we have already.

GibsonGaming while I can definitely agree with you about annoying background music especially during npc interactions, there are games that do it right. Halo is definitely one of them. Cut scenes or menu navigation come to mind. Mass effect is known for its themes and music, as well as Destiny, Advent Rising, etc. I know several people that can have an elicited feeling of nostalgia when hearing a track from something like World of Warcraft. There are definitely times where music needs to be turned off.... like where you're on a planet in SWTOR for 8 hours and you just can't stand that theme any longer. You definitely have good points, but I think a majority of us like to experience the music in a game, for at least one play through.

Forrest of Elwynn Music, Howling Fjord ( Wow ), Below the Asteroids ( Eve Online ) and few titles of the X Series, everytime i hear them i get chievers down the spine and want to play those games again just to hear the music again in my know Environment. And SC has really good music ( execpt the Battle Music which can get kinda annoying :D )

"Hype" should be completely irrelevant. You want hype when you launch your game in few months or launch a kickstarter. it's been 4 years and people who backed SC are not 12 year olds with attention span of 2min. People want to see actual progress and less "there is x and a but let us speak about it for 20min and show you some recycled footage".

I like this new ATV! Better chemistry, superior overall content delivery. Cannot get enough. I hate to be greedy but many of us want more "Meat & Potatoes" like this if you catch our drift. More content reveals that wow us besides having to wait for another 'con' event. It doesn't even have to be concrete video footage, it can be as rugged and incomplete as can be.

Andreas Lutsch I agree they do that but it's a mistake imo. People would only be scared off if it was like that at release, not in alpha. Either they will support the vision or not. But those who have backed, a large number are starting to get more disillusioned by their perceived lack of content. I don't share that view but some content is sometimes better than perfect content in 10 months time. If those who invested are happy with the content then they will attract more through word of mouth IMO.

Chris Hoesel I would halve those estimates, especially if they release 2.6.1 around the scheduled time (i.e. mid-Feburary), and the 2.6.2 in a couple months after that. These two patches, especially 2.6.2 contain fundamental systems necessary for the mechanics the players will interact with in 3.0 to work.

it´s nice that they put the musicsystem in the background of the video so you can kind of hear what they are talking about in action :-D

If anyone from CIG is reading, just remember most people only comment to complain or moan. Tens of thousands of people who really enjoyed this video aren't writing comments, that's just how it is, but we're here nonetheless. Very interesting video, thanks again!

I'm actuallly quite happy that they put efforts in the music ! I don't understand why there's so much hate about it, I mean come on, music is what I mostly remember from a game and give me chills when I listen to it (i.e. Starcraft 1 or Rayman)

Thank you for this deeper look into the music system and the Geoff's insights into composition. I've been very interested in the music and sound development of the game and this was an excellent addition to that.

Wooow those moons and new plantlife, looks amazing EDIT: And the snow and weather improvements! Can always count on the germany office :D EDIT2: I also really love the music from the constellation commercial, it feels very Star Trek which is just the way i like it! To have some music like that play in the background as you explore a nebula or something like that would be amaaaazing for the feeling of exploring and boldly going where no man has gone before!

Geoff sounds like a cool guy and what I could hear of his music sounded great. But why not have one instance in the video where we can just listen to a "track" (I know in video games usually it's a bit more dynamic, but essentially, you can still present it as a track) to really appreciate the music. The music should be in the foreground, not in the literal background. The ATVs are slowly picking up again, but I feel the format changes still aren't really my cup of tea. It has potential to work very well, but also show, don't just tell! Thanks to CIG for your ongoing efforts to give us TBDSSE!

music along with the sound in game is so important with immersion. we do need the option(s) of controlling the levels of loudness etc... ie the game Watch Dogs 2 you can't control the music volume and it drowns out all other sounds.
