Star Citizen: Comparing 2 mid range explorer vessels

400i was robbed from its original strengths when the Connies and the Corsair were buffed from 2 s2s to 1 S3 shield. Especially when the shield and speed was the excuse used for it to have 2 s4 weapons and worse turreting. Master modes has further caused issues by nerfing said speed by capping it down to 1k m/s from its original 1250 m/s. Further issues include the design idea behind the cargo bay which cut its cargo carrying cap in half because of the elevator struts as well as having an extra escape pod that wasn't removed after the ship was changed from a 4 person ship down to a 3 person ship. It breaks my heart because I love the 400i and CIG just dumped on the thing because "origin bad"

@@CraigPaschang yeah, mastermodes has destroyed any concept of blockade runners which the 400i was tangentially a part of by making it easier to snare and QED people and nerfing the speeds. If you sell a ship as defense and a runner and then completely destroy the ability to do just that, you ruined a ship. This goes for the 400i, the MSR and a few other ships where speed was their bread and butter. The 400i was enjoyable pre master modes even when it was effectively nerfed when the Corsair and Connie were shield buffed but post master modes it's just sad and shows CIG doesn't give a shit about player freedom. Master modes is the antithesis of player freedom and it rolls down and pervades the entire game.

Don't forget that the devs once allowed the 400i to carry a roc, but then decided that having the landing gear extended by an extra 4 inches to allow the clearance needed made the ship look ugly.

why not a large combat ship in the spirit (no pun intended) of the Crusader Spirit? Normandy was a larger ship and pretty much resemblences the Spirit ALOT! NOW...just size it up and make it more exploration/combat focused and there we go! -> I would rather choose this then a 400i variant because of the obvious ship shape.

LAW: so nice to see s video from you! I've had the 400i from its original release window. The Corsair has its advantageous features but the 400i serves my purposes better. As I do mostly courier, investigation, and such, the lower cargo capacity doesn't hurt my needs when I'm using it.

Excellent video. I got the Corsair in game, and I love it. I like the visual appeal of the 400i more, but, the corsair just FEELS like it has more multi role, and I really enjoy having the ramp at the back, because I still have "cargo platform" ptsd from all the issues in the past haha. Also, that elevator is clutch as hell in some situations, from exiting a ship during combat, to having a homie on the roof with a rail gun for extra oomph haha.

Agreed, “origin is a luxury brand” stuff but look at luxury car brands. Mercedes, rolls royce, bentley… Those things are good high performance cars too. The 400i’s balance should be something like: Good weapons, good shielding and armor but it’s a bit heavy

I love the 400i and I use mine to travel from A to B. I figure when the game has more systems, I want to take the time (beyond the regular activities I enjoy) to just go and visit places. The 400i lets me feel like I'm on tour, I love the luxury feel and attention to detail.

Love the 400i's looks. Also when it comes to proper exploration, ive found the 400 to be better for parking and disembarking on foot. The Corsair sits to low to the ground it can be difficult to find a flat enough surface to park stably on. Obviously the Corsair is the more versatile and harder punching ship, but for me the 400i cant be beat

Or now it’s better for transportation or rescue missions because you can lock the cockpit from the inside. Once somebody tried to pirate me but I heard them shoot the doors snd camped them in a corner. So it’s already better in that regard.

I'm sorely tempted to pick up the 400i. Normally I'm a combat pilot but looking at the 400i makes me think of a full blown live in ship with a bit of comfort and the holotable makes it truly appealing if it'll have CiC capabilities. The big draw back for me would be the inability to carry the armed Cyclone.

I pledged for a 400 and bought the Corsair with auec in game. For my playstyle (solo FPS mercenary) the Corsair is my go-to ship as it can carry the Nursa so I have an on the spot regen point and also can patch up minor wounds without having to make a run to a city or station. The pilot weapons also give me some options for ship v ship which tbh is not my favorite thing to do since it seems to have changed into an 80s arcade game with all the overdone and quite distracting hit effects and just lack of fun overall.

Awesome video! It’s funny, the more I look at the 400i the more it feels like it’s meant to be a competitor to the Zeus, Spirit, and FL series of ships instead of the Corsair and Connie’s. If this ship was sitting at 175-200 it crushes the competition as a daily and for exploration. Give it another variant or two then it really does sit nicely among those ships.

My personal favorite thing with the corsair is the running lights. They're like floodlights and are great on dark terrain. The fact that I can turn them on and off as well as set to auto is fantastic. The utility it affords you for whatever you want to do makes it hard to try and fly the other ships in its class as a daily driver I think.

Breaks my heart how much CIG have ruined the 400i currently with all the adjustments for master modes. It used to be the best handling ship in class by FAR for its size, a real pleasure to fly. It had incredible shields and speed, which made it a lover more than a fighter, and a great ship for much gameplay in the verse. Now it’s just bad at everything.

Give it time. You're right, master modes did a number on the 400i and how it performs, but that's just for right now. The 400i was always intended, both in lore and by the designers to be a competitor for the Aquila and the Corsair. So as they continue to balance them, it will be with the intention to bring them back to their original design.

One of the dumbest reasons I like the 400i is the front door. I love the drop down stairs, and I missed having that on my Freelancer. It's definitely one of the ships I want to get.

Nice review. I feel like there are 4 aspects to this ship that need addressing for it to stand out and be unique: 1. Higher SCM and Top Speed to reflect its looks and role. 2. Raised higher in landing struts to allow those extra vehicles to fit. 3. Having a stock cargo bay that has less SCU capacity then a Cutlass Black seems like a real miss. 4. Turret placements are odd and break up the lines of this slick ship. I think top rear turret should be able to shoot forward and feel like it should have been on the roof in some way or nearer the front. If they could address these issues I think this ship would be elevated in desirability. I’m happy with the pilot controlled S4’s as they are IF they fixed the rest of the ship

On paper, the Corsair beats the pants off the 400i in every aspect. But in reality, I ALWAYS find my self flying the 400i, it does everything I need it to and does it well. By comparison, I struggle to enjoy flying the Corsair! I HATE it's huge, lopsided wings, it's stubby landing gear and for some reason I'm not a fan of it's interior, in spite of loving the interiors of all other Dakes. Both great ships, it's all down to personal preferences, no doubt others will have the polar opposite opinion to me and that's cool, imo. SC does this so well!

400i is an exploration vessel that dabbles in combat. The constellation is a mix and the Corsair is a combat ship that dabbles in exploration.

If you look at the bottom cockpit, it seems to be set up for that. Looking at other multicrew ships, I have a theory that the game engine only allows ships to have one driver's seat, but the corsair suggests that CIG is hoping to get that changed at some point.

I have flown both, I would choose the 400I as their is just one huge issue with the Corsair, the blasted landing gear gets mangled and you either can't take off, get severely mauled leaving a hanger and have to go to a outpost just to repair the games mistakes.

400i all day everyday, although it needs a gun upgrade, roof access and maybe some variants (425a, 415p, 450r) I absolutely love exploring the verse in my 400i, bringing my X1 force and a ground vehicle (STV, Cyclone) and being able to go anywhere! Corsair is great for raiding ships cargo bays in space… a good thing for that, but in atmosphere it handles like dog **** and can’t land easily on uneven terrain.

I love the 400i. Sure MM has made the idea of running away while shooting behind. I’m just hope they make a lot more ships with quantum dampeners. I know it sucks to have a slow ship in those situations, but some speeding up up turrets and it being more often difficult to run nav mode away from a fight means ships like this will shine more and just crewing turrets in these fins will be more important

I remember in PTU you could remove the 400i's turrets and put them on the pilot slots. No turrets, but better pilot guns. A fair trade off in my opinion, but was removed.

The 400i has the funkiest exterior of any Origin ship but the interior looks so comfortable it's one of those ships you'd actually want to live in IRL. The only real drawback is that there's a criminal waste of space in the lower deck. They could have put the escape pods in the components compartment and nearly doubled the cargo capacity with minimal effort. The fact such a large ship has that little cargo capacity is almost insulting. Plus, it makes more sense the escape pods would be placed closer to the crew quarters anyways.

I have both currently, I keep a $350 slush fund in my account so I can move in and out of ships as I see fit. I am a huge Drake fan so my Corsair has LTI and I will probably trade it up to the Ironclad Assault when it becomes flight ready. I just picked up the 400i so I haven't flown it yet as I am waiting for the 3.24 update before I play again and will probably keep it till the Zeus comes out unless I really like it. I am also likely trading in my Carrack in for a Arrastra when it is flight ready assuming it will out value the Carrack at time of release. I have two Mirai Pulse with LTI waiting for the ships I want as keepers but I am reluctant to give up my slush fund as I like the ability to move in and out of ships at will and have flown just about everything out there over the years with it. Until I bought the Mirai Pulse I hadn't spent a dime on the game in over 7 years. If CGI ever gets there sht together enough to actually play this game with minimal to no bugs I might spend more real money but that's a long shoot in my opinion at this point.

I have both ships, and feel they have a unique need the same as you'd compared the 600i to the Carrack or the 315P to the Terrapin. I really like how CIG has built these brands of ships in a way that can coincide with either a play style or personal character style while keeping it all interesting. I also enjoyed this comparison video. Thank you for your perspective; always a treat to see your perspective on comparing similar yet uniquely distant ships. BTW: given I'm a Trekkie, I do prefer the 400i; it's a beautifully sleek little ship. Fly safe!

MM is being balanced for combat. Since there is no exploration in the game yet, we will have to wait for that before they balance MM and ship stats for exploration ships, but I hope they don't just get a lot more range but also a lot more speed, since big shields are now useless for non-combat ships.

The tragedy of the 400i is that it used to be a fantastic ship when it first appeared in the PTU, practically bug free, but every release since it's had a new set of bugs. I've got mine on buyback until it gets its gold pass.

I agree with other comments, the 400i needs a S3 shield. Its obviously not made to be a fully capable combat ship, but maybe upgrading the the rear turret + an S3 shield would give it the strength its size dictates.

I would like to say Drake isn't a manufacturer that creates death traps. If you look at the lore for the stuff like the cutlass red, Drake makes objectively functional ships. Firepower, hull, components, etc. They just don't put anything besides that in their ships. No luxury, etc.

Today, the 400i disappoints 😢 it was the ship that got me really into sc. Sad, it's been unnecessarily nerfed and can't even be properly compared with the corsair or constellation series since its only got better fuel and looks good but that's all. It needs better maneuvering thrusters, more cargo space, additional weapons, and radar isn't implemented. For price, definitely not worth. 💔

400i has been a secret love of mine for yrs (ish) and thats odd cos i think origin ships are trash. but the 400i was so good perfect size and had shields to defend when you got attacked. made it feel like a tanky ship with lots of utility.. sad to say these days its been "nerfed" by proxy the competitors have been buffed to high heaven and the 400i has been left behind. and defending its behind is kinda pointless now sins master mode has removed that option entirely if you trying to get away cos its as slow as every other ship so its not getting away from anyone. im hoping it gets some love or a sister ship with some other tricks.. right now it jas more flaws than good points

you make some good points and most of the comments that I've made today seem to all revolve around how badly the 400i has been affected by Master Modes. But the pendulum swings both ways with Star Citizen. And they haven't even started to address balancing how larger ships have been affected by it yet. So all is not lost. There's also a lot of changes coming with how components are going to work. So hopefully between that and after a few balance passes the 400i is going to go back to how it was originally intended to compare with the other ships.

Funny, both ships are close to 'perfect' for me but neither can quite make it over the edge to make me buy one. I want to go-to ship of this size, have it be my millenium falcon if you will, but none of them quite do it for me. The concept Mercury was looking to be that ship but they completely botched it.

I love the 400i, its just with current gameplay its not that useful. As a daily driver the ships that either have a medbed or can fit a nursa as just better. I can fight, cargo, and bunker with a connie and nursa way more than a 400i. Its a shame because I like the 400i better.

Corsair had always 4xS5 guns and 2xS4 guns. They were never buffed. With 3.23 it's just new that gimballed weapons are no longer one size smaller. But the with the 400i you're right. It's rather useless now.

The 400i is one of the most beautiful ships, but at the same time it is pointless. At the moment in the game it is outdated and loses to all competitors of its level, the ship needs a redesign, otherwise it will be garbage like the Freelancer series at the moment
