A playthrough of Nintendo's 2017 3D shooter for the Super Nintendo, Star Fox 2.
Played through the game on hard mode. I am playing the version that was included with the SNES Classic Edition.
Though Star Fox 2 didn't see an official release until 2017 with its inclusion on the SNES Classic, this follow-up to the very first SuperFX game was completed and ready for release back in 1996.
You can find my playthrough of the first Star Fox here: • Star Fox (SNES) Playth...
I seem to recall that Nintendo got cold feet shortly before the game's intended release, and feared that releasing it so close to the launch of the N64 might blur the lines a bit too much between the console generations. It certainly wouldn't do to convince your customers that they didn't need to buy a shiny, new N64 for 3D gaming, would it?
Unfinished, fan-hacked prototypes of Star Fox 2 had floated around the internet for years, but thankfully the big N finally saw reason to make available the game in its final finished form, and entirely in English, no less!
It's a lot of fun to play now, and it's hard to imagine just how much this would've impressed if had been put out twenty-three years ago. The graphics were a massive jump over those in the original Star Fox (no doubt owing to the increase in power from the Super FX 2 chip), and the impression of less linear level design helps the game feel quite progressive for its time.
Whereas the original Star Fox was strictly a rail-shooter, the sequel gives you a bit more freedom. In addition to the ability to choose the stage order, the stages themselves feel more like arenas than hallways this time. Encounters with fighter squads, missile groups, and enemy officers happen in open space, and they give you enough maneuverability to help sell the illusion of freedom for the short time that they tend to last.
Fighting for control of the bases feels a lot like the all-range mode from Star Fox 64. The areas are small, but there are items hidden in their nooks and crannies, and there are some simple door puzzles thrown in for variety's sake. These areas, along with the base interiors, also allow you use of the walker mode in order to flip switches, take out ground-based enemies, and to more easily maneuver the bases' corridors. The corridors sections were my favorite part of the game - they feel like super-simplistic mech combat sequences, and the controls are a lot better than you might expect with such an uneven framerate and an entirely digital control scheme. I also really loved them for the super-primitive look of their non-textured, low poly-count environments. They're simple enough to look classic rather than trashy and cheap two decades later.
Though the quality and the speed of the 3D graphics can't compare to the early stuff on 32-bit consoles, they are unbelievable for the SNES. The design of the levels and the enemies is as solid as you could hope for when everything is made up of giant, flat triangles, and the 2D art sets it all off nicely. So does the soundtrack, with its diet space opera-brand of synth orchestra tunes.
The only reservation I have with Star Fox 2 is that it loses a lot of the spirit and personality of the first game with its shift in styles. Most of the best moments in Star Fox were the pre-scripted set pieces and the inane chatter between squad members. Those elements really helped to focus the experience and anchor the story to the gameplay. Star Fox 2 lacks these things - the choice of different wingmen means you don't get any sort of personal banter, and the lack of any narrative elements turns most of the battles into a series of arcade-style shooting galleries.
The game is a fantastic achievement and a great deal of fun to play despite its liver spots and its creaky joints, but it doesn't really feel like Star Fox. It feels more like the game that Vortex wanted to be with its transforming vehicles and open spaces. Whether that is a good or bad change is up to your tastes.
Regardless, I didn't find that in any way a deal-breaker. I really enjoyed Star Fox 2, and I enthusiastically recommend it to any SNES fan that hasn't yet had the pleasure.

today: just stick image, graphics, or assets made separately by different teams and call it a day. then (eras before PC were convenient): So we need to turn dots into images and we need to do it because the system only can display dozens or hundreds of images. How to? Also in case of Super FX: The geniuses at Argonaut decided to put a GPU chip in every cartridge of their games they produce.

I'm an expert in the original Star Fox and 64. When this unreleased game finally got the chance to be played, this game is actually a forgotten GEM! So sad the original story of why it was cancelled, though I do understand why, because PS1 did outclass it in graphics, plus N64 was already on it's way by '95/'96. I managed to beat it 100% in the SNES Classic. This Star Fox pushed the SNES to 100% power, thanks to the Super FX 2 chip (which Yoshi's Island also used). One thing I love most is you can actually play as Falco and defeat Andross AS HIM! "You're out of your game, Fox!"

The super-cool sequel to the classic Star Fox that never saw the light of day until 2017! I initially played the emulated ROM of it though and let's just say: it is glorious. I really like the unique approach with the gameplay here as more open-ended rather than streamlined and linear like the first game. Basically you choose your battles on the map as the enemy moves in real time, sort of like a turn-based strategy game approach, and get whisked away into the combat upon touching a foe where the real action plays out. The full on 3D battles that follow are quite the fast-paced and satisfying dogfights and definitely feel like a step-up from the game's predecessor. This WOULD HAVE been the game that introduced holding shots down and locking on to enemies into the series, and it's immensely fun and satisfying. On planets you have to transform your Arwing to take the fight on two feet, mowing down enemies indoors while limited by gravity and platforming. But it's all just so well-designed and fun that it really doesn't slow the game down at all! Instead, the variety makes the experience feel fresh and helps Star Fox 2 feel like a true sequel, in that regard. The Star Fox crew themselves consisting of Fox Mcloud and his friends each have their own attributes to their ships, strengths and weaknesses, which is pretty awesome too. It's all a pretty fantastic thrill ride, especially on Hard and Expert modes, where Andross's evil forces are a constant looming threat, attempting to move forward from their base and keep closing in on Corneria, which you gotta protect. There's so much going on, and all so well-designed, truly a pity this one didn't reach the mainstream public market until very recently for the SNES Classic Edition. I'm actually still surprised it finally got an official release _at all._ I often wonder as what kind of reception and legacy this gem could have been released to if it were released back then as intended. Would gamers find it to be as good as the original? Even better, thanks to its bold new additions to the formula, or would it have perhaps alienated those who loved the original for straying too far from the simplicity and straightforward nature? I can't really say for certain, but I can attest to the opinion that man, were these silicon graphics dudes impressively savvy when it comes to providing unique and entertaining visuals that enhance the experience and make it so memorable, with their beautiful and colorful combination of polygons and sprites. The underwater parts where you have to transform to transition between the areas above and below the surface, and the final fight against Andross are totally trippy and unique moments. Everything zooms along at breakneck speeds, so the action always feels intense, as well as a wholly unique and satisfying experience that is very much unlike anything else on the system. I think Star Fox 2 is really great, everything is just awesomely built, and it's amazing we finally got an official release over 20 years later. I wholeheartedly recommend it as an experience and a fun novelty addition to anyone's SNES collection.

It looks like the developers had to sacrafice the soundtrack and sound effect quality as well as sprite detail just to fit the new content. Amazing that they were able to pull this off with the system limitations at the time.

It would have been awesome if they'd release it for the original SNES as well (thus: on an actual SNES-cartridge). Guess that would be too much of a hassle, having to start manufacturing those chips and cartridges again, just for the few that still have an original (working) SNES laying around.

I agree, they should've released this game in the first place, as this maxed out the SNES' graphics and gameplay design, even though it did look obsolete compared to N64 with Star Fox 64 as well as PS1.

So, pray tell, how is it that a game that was originally scrapped and canceled in the 90s suddenly resurface and be released in 2017? What changed Nintendo's minds then, huh?

FireAceDragon Ironically, Nintendo was dead set on not releasing this game, this only saw the light of day due to some sort of outside pressure.
@LITTLE1994
@LITTLE1994 3 жыл бұрын
The original reason why it was cancelled was because by 1995 or '96, the PS1's graphics outclassed it and N64 was already coming, plus, since it was made on the Super FX 2 chip, it would've been an expensive release, so it wasn't worth it. This game is finally seen now because when the SNES Classic was made, the producer asked Nintendo to let it be released to the world due to the fact Star Fox 2, though cancelled, was a 100% finished game, plus it inspired Super Mario 64 and Star Fox 64, so it would be a waste otherwise. That's why we play it now.

This is a game I wasn't too keen on when it was released, but looking at it now, even though it used an enhancement chip, the game is quite remarkable. At some point I need to add it to my game collection, the first one at least, would have to get a repro for this one as I don't own an SNES Mini.

That's kinda the fate of the Star Fox franchise. Usually used to show off or highlight some form of tech or advancement for the systems they are on, likely why we only ever really get one per console. Could even pick out the feature: Original - FX Chip. 64 - Voice chatter in real time/all range movement, vs mode. Adventure's - Not really a starfox game, but the new rendering features of the GC. Assault - real time ship changes, orchestra music and better couch PvP. Command - The touch pad. Online vs. 64 3D - the 3D Zero - the WiiU pad. 2 - pushing through original SNES tech to its absolute limit. And Zero hurt the franchise so much that we didn't (maybe we get a shadow drop of something but not hold hope) get something for the switch.

So.... as I am a lore nut.... I think that what happened is after andross’s initial defeat (I think 64 and zero are retellings of star fox 1) andross fled the lylat system and set up a space station with the remnants of his army next to a blue giant star because the cornerian army took venom over. I guess the cornerian army was severely weakened after the lylat wars and could not defend themselves. Thus starfox team was assigned to the task. With each victory, the team got closer and closer to discovering that andross was in an area beyond the lylat system.

Imagine, the game near complete and practically set to launch later in the year, then boom, the game is cancelled just because of 1) the PlayStation was already out and had more advanced graphics which they feared Star Fox 2 would be compared to, and 2) Nintendo wanted all eyes on the N64 and believed that releasing a major game on the SNES would detract from its release.

It is a thought that Luigi could be a playable character and be a continuation of Super Mario 64 and possibly add newer level like the race kart levels, ocean, city levels, and making the space level the last level and fight Bowser there. I would think that Super Mario Sunshine would be considered a Mario 64 2.
