About The Game: Star Fox Zero is a 3D scrolling shooter video game developed by Nintendo and PlatinumGames for the Wii U. The sixth installment in the Star Fox series, Star Fox Zero was stated by lead producer and supervising director Shigeru Miyamoto as being neither a prequel, sequel, or remake of Star Fox 64. After a delay from November 2015, the game was released worldwide in April 2016, to mixed critical reception. A standalone tower defense game, titled Star Fox Guard, was bundled with the game

I thought I was the only person that likes this game!!! The controls had a steep learning curve, but I felt it was worth it. Once you get it down after a few levels you have a lot of fun with it. Yeah, it's not a game for casuals or whiners in my opinion, and that's fine. I was content with only me liking it, but it's still fun to see someone else be excited about it.

It was made by Platinum Games. Their games always have steep learning curves, some of them downright punishing for those who can't master their games' gameplay

I love Star Fox Zero and I really think it’s an underrated Wii U gem that got criticized mainly because people did not want to give a chance. I have a “special” history with Star Fox Zero. I rented this game for a week when it was a recent game and I really loved it. I remember the game being incredibly hard and punishing but in less than a week I finished it and it was amazing. I gave the game back to the store after the week of usage I had. Then, years after I originally played it, I heard people saying the game was trash and I was surprised and I saw that it was actually the popular opinion. So I recently bought the game (with Star Fox Guard) for 45$ CAD and began playing a second time and I still love it. In fact, I might love it even more now that I can appreciate it’s difficulty as I am more skilled as a gamer. I love this game because it is hard and punishing which is a thing I really love with it because Nintendo tend to just make games that are way too easy even for the standard of their series such as Kirby Star Allies and Super Mario Odyssey but it’s not the case for this game and I’m grateful for this. I actually need to learn and understand the game mechanics to win. I am also a huge fan of the gameplay variety of this game there is a lot of vehicles to use and I love them all especially the Walker/Arwing as it just feels so good to switch between the two at will. The amiibo support is amazing! The controls are weird at first but when I got used to them they were great and use well the GamePad.

Shame this game has gone down as mostly forgotten and overlooked due to the Wii U's failures. I wish the Wii U was a bigger success so more people not only experienced the game but more people appreciated it. As it is it's just one of those games people dismiss as bad without even playing it.

I’m sad that the Wii U failed but I’m happy that this game is still a Wii U exclusive as I feel that there are just way too much Wii U ports on Switch that prevents us from getting sequels. If Star Fox has a game on Switch, I hope it would be a new original game instead of a lazy Wii U port with a “funky mode” added.

The controls are what divide people on this title. They aren't that bad IMO, would have been with a more traditional layout especially given that it wasn't a launch title like initially planned. Nintendo should really port this over, so more people can get a change to play it, it really is one of the first Stat Fox games in a while to actually feel like a star Fox game.

You know, this whole thing reminds me of The Wonderful 101. An underappreciated Wii U title whose controls are awkward to get used to, but is amazing when it starts to click. @@Ponaru But the motion controls in SFZ actually work really well. Just because you DSPs can't handle motion aiming (mostly out of bias against motion controls in general), even if it's vastly superior to shitty dual analogue aiming, doesn't mean that they're just a bad gimmick. How about taking what little time it actually takes to learn and get used to a new control scheme instead of complaining? I and many people out there like Star Fox Zero. Hell, I even completed that game. On my first run through the game, I activated the Black Arwing by accident, because I wanted to see what my Falco Amiibo does, and I still got through the game without much trouble, even though the Black Arwing is a fucking glass cannon that goes down within just a few hits.

StarFox Zero doesnt "Answer what StarFox is", because it wasnt a question that needed to be answered. Assault brought the 64 formula to the modern age of the time, and command pushed forward with that. For one reason or another they put StarFox to the side and thought "Oh shit, the fans only want 64 again, so let's keep making 64", and so now, the series will continue to be trapped in this stale formula, much like OTHER franchises Nintendo has been slowly killing that are "basically the same each time", as you said.

Condensed version: the story's the same again, the controls are bad but you love Star Fox so it's ok. There's new ships that break the momentum of the game where you gotta slow down to use a helicopter and a walkie bot along with a hacking timewaste. Wing damage is gone because it was too tough, I mean... innovation. Increased difficulty from forced gamepad views. Completion bonus renders amiibo integration useless. When you have to say "do not let the controls get you down" there's still a problem there. I do respect your message at the end though. Keep doing what you do.
@kaihedgie
@kaihedgie 8 жыл бұрын
+Chezne "the controls are bad but you love Star Fox so it's ok" So you completely ignored the part where he said he _liked_ the controls, along with anti-frustration features to boot "There's new ships that " Only one new ship. You also only use it for two missions only (one if you already cleared the story). Every other mission uses the Arwing and Landmaster "Wing damage is gone because it was too tough, I mean... innovation." You lose your Hyper Laser if you are hit twice, regardless of how much damage was incurred " Increased difficulty from forced gamepad views" Only increased if you didn't want to learn how to adjust to them. By the time you've reached at least near the end of the game, you should have gotten used to them already "Completion bonus renders amiibo integration useless." 'Kay? Plenty other games have DLC that render completion goals useless. And maybe, just maybe people want the option to be able to use that stuff right away.

Chezne i dont know why everyone was hating. This is all accurate. I forced myself to play it for a week because star fox 64 was my childhood, but ZERO was such a let down. They shouldn't have made the gamepad so integral to the game. I just want a star fox game that is tough because of the game content, not the control scheme. And they ruined the flow of the game with the different modes and gimmicks. This game is fine for the new generation, but older gamers who grew up on the n64 star fox when they were little kids are gonna find this game a massive letdown.

After hearing the Star Fox rumor (DON'T look it up if you haven't heard about it yet) I decided to give this game another shot, despite initially putting it down after 2 levels. A large reason behind my deciding to do so was you and your review, you lovely bearded person you: your love for the game encouraged me to say "you know what? I'll play it, stick with it, and finish this darn thing this time! " And you know what? I'm not done with it yet, but so far it was completely, totally, unquestionably worth doing so. It's not perfect sure (gyrocopter levels made me cringe a bit -_-) but honestly? The otherwise great visuals, soundtrack and controls (YES they're weird and YES having a Splatoon type control scheme would've worked better: still, they WORK and are fun when you're used to them) have sold me, and I'm looking forward to finally finishing this puppy :)

I absolutely fell in love with this game, and I'll even go as far as to say that I love it more than I loved Star Fox 2 and Star Fox 64. I don't care what anyone else thinks. Once I got used to the controls, I honestly couldn't put the game down. I can't even begin to describe the look on my face when I found out that Peppy said barrel roll each time I did a barrel roll before spamming barrel rolls. Or when on my third playthrough of Venom, outta sheer curiosity I decided to turn around and shoot Andross and to my amazement, it actually worked! Or when I scanned the Fox amiibo, discovered the Retro Arwing, and wondered to myself, "If I play Corneria... Will I hear the classic theme?" And again, to my absolute surprise, I did! This game has done what so many others couldn't. I couldn't help but smile. I was smiling from start to finish. I was having so much fun and it just amazed me and impressed me in every way. Fortuna is easily my favorite level. I loved fighting Wolf. Figuring out how to get the mission accomplished in Corneria. I loved the Black Arwing. The game just impressed me so much and I was having such a good time and I was so amazingly happy to finally get a new, good, beautiful Star Fox game! I grew up with Star Fox. One of my earliest memories was playing Star Fox 64 on the Wii virtual console when I was 7 or 8. I felt like I had to do myself a favor and complete it. I recommend it so much. It's a must have Wii U title, and seeing all the negative reviews breaks my heart. So it's so nice to see Jirard feeling exactly the way I do

Jirard, you have no idea how much what you say means to me. It is heartwarming and awesome to see someone bravely stand their ground and say they loved Star Fox Zero despite the utter hate people have said about this game for over a year. I personally picked up this game despite what everyone was saying and had to wonder what game everyone else played and called utterly broken and unplayable like Superman 64 or Bubsy 3D. What makes me angrier is that most people who criticize the game never even played Star Fox Zero, let alone ever touched a Wii U. They just looked at the pre-release reviews panning the game or the console and went into blind rage and hysteria, which is completely unfair. The Wii U has been misunderstood and Star Fox Zero has been treated unfairly since release. All anyone had to do was try and then they could have the right to complain or praise it like I did and have since. Again, thank you Jirard for standing up for your beliefs and views and not just shitting on a game that doesn't deserve or warrant it. I only hope that despite what a lukewarm reception the game has gotten, the rebooted series will continue, Platinum Games will work on it and give us Krystal as promised, and that Star Fox will not simply fade away into mediocrity.

There should at least be an alternative to the controls (besides the aiming only while shooting because it is still the same aiming but only active while shooting), when you have a lot of problems. I maybe have some problems with my Gamepad, since i noticed that the aiming always goes a little bit more to the right no matter what i try. So because my gamepad has a problem i have to fight the controls to aim right. That is a huge downside in my opinion since controls are always very important. (ask Salty Alex Driving the Cars in L.A. Noire)

+Desgaroth There are plenty of great games that have wonkiness that needs some getting used to. Kid Icarus Uprising, basically, required you use a stand for the 3DS. Monster Hunter and Dark Souls require you to grip your controller weird if you want to sprint, move your character, and move your camera. (I'm not sure if it's a term used anywhere else, but ProJared called it the 'Monster Hunter claw'.) Any pre-analogue stick FPS games had super weird controls that even to this day I don't think people would be used to out of the box. The older Armored Core games had similar issues to pre-analouge FPS's, except they were third person shooters with 3 dimensional movement. In all of these games you can't say that the controls are bad, they just take getting used to.
@Desgaroth

Tejan455 have you already tried the game? I Played Monster Hunter a long time and i never had even the slightest problems with that. I got plenty of experience with very different controls. Hell, it took me maybe a minute to get used to the flight in Skyward Sword. I would have loved to play Star Fox Zero but after some tries i noticed that the aiming will go slightly in one direction. For me it goes slightly to the right, and i have to hold against it and i have to recalibrate it 3 or 4 times per minute. It is no fun to play a game when your worst enemy are the controls, because there are no alternatives. Imagine someone having a problem with the gamepad so the aiming will always go bonkers. The game is not playable anymore, because there is no alternative. As long as there will be no update in that regard, i won't see myself to play the game any further.

Enjoyed your review for Star Fox Zero as, like most other people, I've had reservations about this game for the past couple of years and rather than being biased one whether you "liked", or "hated" the mandatory use of the Wii U gamepad that most other reviewers fixate on and always criticize, you explained its overall learning curve to where you can become accustomed to it and in the end be proficient with it. I'll have to give this game a playthrough sometime soon. Now, if Nintendo would just take the beautiful Star Fox 64 3DS remake and port it over to the Switch (along with Ocarina of Time 3DS), my nostalgia will be tingling with delight!

Heres my thoughts: if a hardcore, quick to learn game player like you was having lots of growing pains with the control scheme, I can only assume most casual players will essentially get alienated by this game and any player who despises the gamepad will shun it simply because they are forced to use it. While its very discouraging to see people bash and hate something you like/love, its best to accept their opinions and move on rather than get rattled. Im very glad you loved this game, but I can very much sympathize with someone who hates it.

I one hundred percent agree with you. At first I thought it was a copy and paste of the original and 64 version's, but the more I played it, It just kept surprising me! I recognized some of the bosses and the levels and It was fun and visually stimulating in equal measure. You can go through the game once that's not much of a challenge but as you're skill level improves, the challenges arise with you, and you get a great sense of reward for doing it. I wanted more! I didn't get chance to complete all 70 medals (roughly half) i can remember finding new area's and secret's to the levels very refreshing. The arcade mode was a nice little bonus, as I can get through the original 3 route without dying, on most play through's. Wholeheartedly recommend!!!

So the key behind getting good at Star Fox Zero is Git Gud? Yeah, I am still at the point where I forget how to aim in this game. That high speed section of the game looks amazing. I suppose it is a shame that some people aren't willing to give the game the time of day because of the controls, but it should have been an option for the 2 player mode or the main game can be completed without motion controls but certain challenge medals required them. Outside of that my biggest issue with the game right now is the lack of radar in all-range mode. I spend so much time thinking, "I don't know where things are.

***possible spoilers in second paragraph, I don't think they are, some might disagree*** This video got me so hype... and then 2 days later I'm returning the game for a refund, but for all the exact opposite reasons that everybody else seems to hate the game. I loved the motion controls, flying felt great, game looked great, but every single reference to 64 that it shoved in -- which made up around 80% of the total spoken dialog and mission layouts -- felt cynical, poorly executed, and sometimes downright insulting, where all of the few and far between original lines and ideas are all done much better. You say this game reawakens what made SF64 great, I think it missed every mark. spoilers... When I can purposefully avoid rescuing katt, intentionally kill star wolf (as in, see them die, they don't run away) before the final stage, rescue every single allied ship not letting a single one of them die, when I can sequence break by finishing a level without switching vehicles like I'm told to, and I'm told "mission accomplished", only to arrive in the next stage in a new vehicle despite avoiding it, and for star wolf to show up on venom, and for katt to show up to pester falco, and for the allied fleet to NOT fall into formation behind me during the mission accomplished screen, and then the final kicker: for mission accomplished to NOT result in a course change... It feels like nothing I do matters in the slightest, the story is set in stone and I cannot change it, drifting through levels not doing anything is just as productive as trying my hardest, and "mission failed" is a game over condition now, so, great fox doesn't lose a wing, you just game over, it's such a let down... All I was saying, over and over, for 2 days straight until I returned the game: "what were they thinking?". This game is a 6/10, and that's as generous as I can possibly be, I think it deserves worse. It is the spiritual successor to Star Fox Assault, not 64. ...Why the hell are we boosting through a debris field? Hey I have an idea, it's freezing rain and sleet outside, I think I'll drive double the speed limit for no good reason. This game is so... stupid... I'm so sad... sorry for ranting...

Having beaten the game, I'm officially 'good' or at least decent at the control scheme. And I still hate it. The problem's not that the controls are difficult, it's that the controls are difficult and do not, by being difficult, add very much to the game. If this game played with Star Fox 64 controls, you would only need to make minor alterations to make it play as well or better than the current control scheme. So what's the point?
@TaskMaster5
@TaskMaster5 8 жыл бұрын
+PikeBot Personally, I don't find them difficult. At all. What they add to the game for me is: 1.) Logic to the Arwing. It never made sense the lasers would be stationary mounts on the wings. Not in a universe that has the tech Star Fox does. It seemed not having a turreted laser was simply a limitation of the medium in the day. Which leads into my next point: 2.) Greater control. Overall, the motion controls open up more freedom to you as a player. Now not only do your vehicles respond well to your inputs, you now have a gun system that does too. Most of the game doesn't need the motion control but while it isn't NEEDED, it does allow for much greater precision. I found myself smiling when I could snipe enemies I may not have been able to get before without making a risky dive or bank. My overall threat range is increased because of how the turret can aim in directions previously impossible. 3.) Time sink decrease. Some aspects of Star Fox felt like padding. Just a way to sink more time into the game. And while my opinion may be unpopular here, Star Wolf is one of the BIGGEST culprits. While I love the fights, I can't deny that they are often what absorbs the most time in my run throughs of older Star Fox games. You spend copious amounts of time going in circles with the enemy just barely out of your reach, only for you to get attacked and have to evade, thus losing your target. The turreted laser makes it so you're always a threat to them. Even if you need to evade, the motion turret lets you get back into the fight even when you're ship can't be in the right place. I've had it where I've had to veer right, but with the motion controls, could still snap fire at my target a few times despite him being to the left of me. Them going in loops isn't such a hassle because I can move my damn gun at will. 4.) Boss fights feel more dynamic. Most boss fights of old were 'fly at them...fly past them...turn around...fly at them...fly past them...', etc. The motion controls allow you to really come at an enemy from different angles. You can circle them, and snipe with the turret at their sweet spots, keeping up constant damage. You can fly high or low if you need to evade enemy fire or some other attack, but still keep hitting a weak point because you can move your gun. While it seems like a simple thing, a non static weapon was the best upgrade the series could have asked for. Maybe they could have done it differently, but moving the game pad a little doesn't phase me. People seem to act like you have to flail the pad around to make it work, or you need to glue your eyes to the pad alone, when you REALLY don't. I'll concede that maybe they could have made better use of the sticks, as opposed to motion control. But, again, I just wasn't bothered by it. The gyro controls are incredibly responsive. I personally don't think the Gamepad has very good sticks for shooters, which is why I hate twin sticking with Splatoon, I'd much rather use the gyro to aim.

I literally never had any troubles with the controls from the start, Idk why it's so hard for people to understand, and it's a great way to shoot as you can hit anywhere you want on the screen. I just wish it wouldn't get out of sync so easily. If you can't glance up and down between screens to adjust your shots you're stupid, it's not the games fault.

I've developed the habit of resetting the reticle after every few volleys, and the shots are always on point thanks to it. I don't understand the "juggle the screens" complain getting tossed around either; with very few exceptions, such as targeting boss weak points, I never look at the gamepad. You just need to get a feel of where your shots will go based on the position of the reticle.

Before I say this know that I've never played a star Fox game but know a lot about games. You shouldn't have to get used to a high skill control scheme to enjoy the game. Nintendo wanted to remake the original to appease current fans and possibly make new ones. While the story does that the controls don't. I'm not saying make it easy but have an option to turn off motion like splatoon did, that way newcomers aren't turned away to a game that has that much of a skill barrier. It would make just as much sense if I told you to play Mario kart while I punched u in the gut repeatedly. You would get used to it, but you would prefer I wouldn't. That's the control scheme of this game, to high of a skill barrier and really not needed to be forced upon you.

+nickbx17 I want to disagree but I don't. If the aim is to generate success to the franchise and appeal not only to the core fanbase but to newcomers (not sure why people view "casuals" as an insult, but them) as well, there shouldn't be a mandatory difficult control system. That meaning the game shouldn't be difficult to control, but the enemy AI and level design can remain without sacrifice.

+Michael O'Connor I have to disagree with that statement, controlling a game like a master from the start does not make a game good or bad at all. Take for instance street fighter, my mother does not know the ups or downs of controlling that game at all let alone pulling off moves, but with enough practice even she could be good at it. Zero is not the kind of game you are going to be a master at the first play though. They explain the controls well enough, even have tutorials. People expecting to be masters at the start seem to be the problem here.
@WordsofIvory
@WordsofIvory 8 жыл бұрын
Kirk Nelson There is a big different between "controlling a game like a master from the start" and "being able to play it functionally instead of wrestling against the controls without hours of practice". Star Fox Zero is the latter. The sadder problem with this is that it is Platinum Games who got it wrong. They're usually masters at this sort of stuff.

It is sad that so many people take Reviews to make opinions for them. Even if I see Reviews downgrading games, I often end up buying them and playing them myself. I usually watch Reviews to see footage that can prepare me for the actual price range (considering to buy it at full prize or waiting for price drop). Best example of such was Amnesia. My siblings talked a lot about it and the graphics being "far too old for this time". I shrugged that off and went into research, but not too deep to give me any critical spoilers. After seeing some Reviews and Let's Plays, I actually bought the game and I never regreted that choice. :)

I have been enjoying this game so much! I can't really speak for fans of StarFox 64 as I didn't like it much. I always found the game's alternative paths frustratingly difficult to find as well as the fact that you could only shoot directly in front of you, making it incredibly annoying since I ended up not killing almost anything and getting hit by them as I collided with them. I fully admit that may probably is related to a lack of skill, but thing is I never enjoyed the game so much as to get better at playing it. This game obviously fixes my two main problems with StarFox 64 so I enjoyed it more for it. I agree that the controls are obscure and really different from traditional games but since I love the controls in Kid Icarus Uprising, I enjoyed then here too.

+Andrew Peska I did when I first played it, but I remember going back to it at one point and realizing just how bad the story and acting were. And honestly, the game play wasn't that fun. Wasn't bad either, but something about it feels a little basic.

Nah, Star Fox Assault is garbage compared to this masterpiece that is "Star Fox Zero". Definitely the best in the series.

Falco, cause he's always goes solo like a badass, Nick Wilde, Mr Toad from The Wind of The Willows (I know he's hyperactive but he's cool to hang around with. At least he's doesn't talk like Slippy), and Bucky O'Hare cause being green is easy.

This game sort of sounds like the skyward sword of the star fox series in regards to how people view the controls.

Elijah Hill I gotta completely disagree I find skyward sword the best looking 3D Zelda until breath of the wild came out. Zelda’s always been linear as every 3D Zelda except for ocarina forces you to go in dungeon order. Even then you could only do at most 3 out of order. I really enjoy the story and it is leagues better than breath of the wild’s story. I don’t care if you don’t agree with me because I love Zelda for how different people have a different favorite and least favorite.

@@elijahhillproductions I agree skyward sword is doo doo, but I also disagree in the fact that the story is probably one of the best in the series. And hands down has the best Zelda. And linearity has always been a factor in Zelda games, save a handful of them. I don’t know why people try to use that as a negative criticism. Linear doesn’t equal bad

@@Link-pr9id eh, skyward sword's linearity and fractured world definitely works against it. i had a great time with the hd remaster and I thought the dungeon design was pretty stellar but i was disappointed by the bizarre, fairly tiny overworld design, even if i appreciated the changes when you revisit areas in the late game and thought those were a fun change of pace. i'm sure botw spoiled me in terms of content and open world gameplay, but i replayed ocarina shortly afterward and found the world quite a bit more engrossing. skyward is a flawed gem, one of the series' weaker points in my opinion but still a strong game regardless. the sky just plain sucks but it looks like they're going to tackle that concept again in the botw sequel and i'm psyched for that
