Voyager had some other great holodeck episodes that also could've been on the list: "Worst Case Scenario" - This is one of my top 10 favorite Voyager episodes. B'Elanna Torres finds a "what-if" holographic scenario of a Maquis mutiny where the main character is an accomplice. Things get extremely crazy when the holographic Ensign Seska begins to terrorize the Voyager crew. This episode features the return of Martha Hackett as the villainess Seska and Chakotay as the villain of the holographic novel. It shows personality in how each of the characters describes how they play the role as the accomplice and reveals Seska's hidden feelings about the Voyager crew before her departure in Season 1. "Author, Author" - The Doctor writes a holodeck program featuring the Voyager crew in questionable roles as a metaphor of his challenging life as a hologram. The plot is very similar to the awesome TNG episode "The Measure of a Man" where the Doctor's existence as a hologram is challenged by a publisher, whom claims the Doctor has no rights to his own publication. This is yet another episode that shows the Doctor's growth over the show in that he has become a sentient being whom should be treated as an equal. It also features calls out to the oppressed by referencing the EMH Mk. I's changed role from holographic doctors to dilithium miners rather than equal sentients due to obsolescence. "Flesh and Blood" - A sequel to "The Killing Game" that has effects in "Author, Author." The Hirogen holographic technology has produced sentient holograms intent on destroying anyone who might get in their way of finding a homeworld. What I love about this episode is it shows more about how the Doctor has grown as a character by betraying the Voyager crew only to later help them stop a massacre when he realizes his mistake. Others I truly enjoyed include "The Killing Game" (Hirogen play as Nazis in a WW2 French town featuring the Voyager crew as their prey) and "Spirit Folk" (Irish holograms become self-aware and believe the Voyager crew to be evil spirits).

Having 2 girls, 9 and 5 and a 1 year old boy changes how you look at everything. As a young man watching this episode I appreciated the acting and storytelling. As a father I find it extremely difficult to watch. I know how it ends and have seen it many times. The difference is that now watching it, especially the scene when Belle dies, is too much for me. I love my children so much and can easily see my own 9 year old in that scene as she too is extremely outgoing and a bit of an adrenaline seeker. One of my favorite episodes was the one where Barclay got zapped by a ray and became a genius and in later on in the episode whenever the Enterprise was trapped and facing impending doom. Barclay went to the one place where he was most familiar with which was the Holodeck and went to work and I still love the dialog between him and the computer. "Computer create the following components to my specifications." "The Holodeck is not programmed to create such things." "Don't worry, I'll walk you through it." That may not be exactly what was said in the episode but that was the general gist. And then whenever the ship came to, Barclay had created an entire interface where he pretty much became the Enterprise computer and it was awesome.

I wish they explored the galactic central race much more than they actually did since they just skipped 10 days of knowledge sharing. 2 of my favorite scenes in this episode is definitely when Barclay was complaining that the ship’s interface was too slow and lectured the computer on how to fix everything, the second is the ending with the introduction of the race, the explanation of everything that transpired and Barclay becoming a Grandmaster of chess despite never even playing the game. I enjoy the entire episode though and there’s lots of good scenes where I’m just cheering on Barclay. Okay, I have a project now. Also, they ignored Crisis Point- BOOOOO...

As much I didn't like Voyager as a series, I have a soft spot for Fair Haven. There are some big and important questions there for interpersonal life. Most importantly, how far may you go in influencing someone, to be more to your liking. Highlighting the importance of accepting the imperfect... And implications for relationships with artificial lifeforms...

Nowadays Our Man Bashir feels like an Archer episode, especially with Garak's constant commentary. Crisis Point also needs to be up there because not only does it brilliantly lampoon a lot of Trek movie tropes, it also led to some much-needed character development.

OMG- now I want the Archer cast to do voiceovers for that episode.

Great list. :) It could've been comprised of DS9 episodes entirely. It's only a paper moon should've been in first place though.

The most honest holodeck episode of what real people would do in one was on the Orville.

Ship in a Bottle was the best holodeck episode and it's shown here for about a tenth of a second.

Yes its the best! And yes, I think the rekockning of Dr. Moriaty concerning the possibillity to leave the holodeck is from "Ship in a bottle"...

HOW CAN OUR MAN BASHIR NOT BE NUMBER ONE!? HOW CAN OUR MAN BASHIR NOT BE NUMBER ONE!!

Because Rebellion Alpha is the best. (I wanted to say:Worst Case Scenario)

I personally find "Bride of Chaotica!" quite enjoyable. But it is objectively (way) less significant in terms of overall series arc than WORST CASE SCENARIO or PATHFINDER, at least 1 of which ought to have made the "Top Ten" list.

It's Only A Paper Moon is my favorite Star Trek episode ever. And the only episode that made me cry. Aron Eisenberg played the war induced PTSD unbelievable realisticly.

"It took his friends helping him" They all HATED Barclay until Picard and Guinan defended him. I wouldn't call them his friends

Glad I wasn't the only one who found this peculiar. They eventually became his friends, but certainly weren't in the beginning.

I am so glad that real life made your list because that was one that was very moving to me. I also agree with the person who said that worst case scenario should have been included. It was a lot better than Z Chaotica episodes

"Elementary, My Dear Data" was one of THE BEST holodeck episodes. It was THE VERY EPISODE that made me start to notice the show. The confrontation between Picard and Moriarty at the end was short but HIGHLY dramatic and tense. I loved it. I would say that it's DEFINITELY in the top three episodes.....maybe #2.

The Nextgen episode with Minuet In “11001001” was my favorite. Followed by the one with the train on the holodeck "Emergence" and all the Vic fontaines.

You mention the episode 'only a paper moon' although I agree with most of the analysis it's probably worth mentioning that PTSD and phantom pains probably aren't the only condition the character was likely suffering from. They even mention within the episode that the character was confronted by his own mortality which could cause quite a few conditions including shellshock.
@francescathomas35022 жыл бұрын
But I thought Shell shock was the old name for what we now call PTSD? (post traumatic stress disorder)

One one hand the holodeck is the perfect plot contrivance. On the other hand all these episodes are amazing.
