Ms. Nichols was thinking about leaving Star Trek, going to Broadway and becoming involved in the Civil Rights movement. Bridge officers are the only ones in command, from Captain, Chief Mate (1st Mate in some countries), 2nd Mate, 3rd Mate, ending with least seniority 3rd Mate if more than one of them, like when I started as the second 3rd Mate. The Chief Engineer wouldn't ever assume authority of the vessel in any way unless ALL bridge officers have already kicked their air addiction, e.g., due to fire or whatnot.

I'm from UK and growing up in the 60s/70s we had very few black women (or even men) on UK shows, but seeing Nichelle as Uhura on USA import Star Trek was amazing. I never really liked Kirk or even Spock much. I loved Bones but I also loved Sulu, Chekhov and especially Uhura. She was a lieutenant on the bridge staff of the best ship in starfleet. She may not have been a particularly major character but she was there every week, a black woman as part of the command staff. I always like how Shatner and Nimoy insisted on getting her, Sulu and Chekov into the Trek films. Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura didn't really have that much to do other than to recite operational lingo, I think Takei had to fight for more lines. They had a few episodes where they could stretch their acting chops, like Uhura in Mirror Mirror, but nothing close to what Kirk, Spock and Bones or even Scotty got. But Shatner always tried to get them involved in later projects as a team.

When the execs wanted to do the Motion Picture, they only wanted Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. They didn't want to use the others. Shatner told them that the others were necessary and if the studio wanted to make a film without them, they can go ahead and make it without Kirk.

I love when Guinan pronounced Guy Nan, played by Whoopie Goldberg made an appearance at a star trek convention. What a lovely thing. Rest in peace Nichelle. You were such a beautiful soul and will not be forgotten.

I’ve only just saw this and, wow, an amazing woman, they’re all nearly gone now, just Kirk sulu and Chekhov, she was an amazing woman from what I saw of her, she was always up for fun or laugh, and not if headed from what I saw of her, but anyway, she was way under used, I’d love to see the clips they cut out of the original episodes, but she was still way underused in the films, only “the voyage home, where she was using those Klingon controls like a pro… and in the last film she gave the idea to spok “the things got to have a tail pip”. (Talking about the bird of pray… I’m going to watch this now, I feel so sad, like I’ve lost a family member. RIP Nichelle… gone but never forgotten all my love to you x

What makes her legacy even more remarkable, is that by any metric, her role, nominally, wasn't a major one, but of a supporting player. Rarely, if ever, has such a definition, been dwarfed by the impact those appearances had on the lives of so many individuals, and our society, writ large. May Ms. Nichols' voice forever resound to Antares, and beyond!!!

I am just….🥹💔….she was the Black Woman that I watched as a little Black Girl whose presence said I belong in the world of SciFi whether it be as a fan, performer, and as I journey along my passion and profession, as both. “Live Long, and Prosper Mam!!!”
