I tried it a few episodes. The quality of work is meant for kids. Pre teen kids. So IDK. If its meant for that age, I think it pretty went well except maybe the plot is not meant for kids so yes they have to make up their mind first to whom they want to sell it.

I adore Discovery and for it's freshness, Gene would be proud. Initially I disliked the retro period it was set in but it became the furthest in the future and broke ground. It truly is the pentacle of all Trek. The other Treks are all retro now.

ST: Discovery has gotten legitimately better over the years. But I do believe those other series have succeeded "in spite of" not "because of" ST: Discovery. Honestly, SNW was made possible because of Anson Mounts' portrayal as Captain Pike. But that's just my opinion.
@jcraigwilliams70
@jcraigwilliams70 9 ай бұрын
Not just yours. I don't hate Discovery by any means. I have grown fond of it, actually. But Mount as Pike is what has helped launch the new interest in Trek. Discovery's first season was decent science fiction, but didn't feel too much like Trek. Season 2 was better. I am just starting S3. I look at Picard as the "present day" of Trek and consider Discovery a *potential* future that is not written in stone.

Anson Mount and the rest of Enterprise new takes on old characters have knocked it out of the park. The writers have also done a great job of ad astra per aspera. They have shown us the cutting edge of Trek from courtroom drama to silliness that is Trek.

Nothing wrong with having a "first female black captain to lead a Star Trek series" or LGBTQ+ representation as scriptwriting choices. But highlighting those choices in a promo video just makes them cheap in retrospect, as if to say: we were not actually developing organic characters that happened to have these traits, we were just ticking off boxes... Oh, and the loss of ST:Prodigy is like losing a member of the Federation! Save Prodigy!

I've watched every single episode and movie of Star Trek there is. And I can say that I have and will always watch TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, Lower Decks, Prodigy (when it reappears somewhere), Picard S3, and SNW multiple times. I have never seen an episode of Disco or Picard S1 - S2 twice, because the writing was awful. I feel for the actors because they were given storylines that went nowhere and characters that were unlikable, one dimensional or useless. Love Star Trek forever.
@jcraigwilliams70
@jcraigwilliams70 9 ай бұрын
I put off watching Picsrd S1&2 because I kept hearing how bad it was (and also because it was not available to me for a long time), but I recently binged the entire series and felt I should watch those two seasons just to be aware of the new characters and their stories. Much to my surprise, I found it wasn't half as bad as people suggested. I have a feeling that at least part of the problem was that it wasn't what people expected. The same thing happened with DS9. A lot of fans complained about it when it came out and several said it was garbage. Later, many of those fans came to appreciate it once they recognized that not every show needed to be on a starship.

I felt that Season 2 of Picard was a definite step up from Season 1 (which I will never watch again, with the exception of 'Nepenthe' - a sincere, beautifully-crafted, emotional Trek diamond amongst an otherwise rough season, whose few tender moments are overshadowed by its numerous crass or callous ones). There are some questionable directing choices - particularly in the finale, where Akiva Goldsman makes so many egregiously careless/thoughtless camerawork and pacing errors that they begin to break suspension of disbelief (he butchered the Discovery Season 1 finale in the same way). Season 2 however - the whole thing is instantly, discernibly better. The presence of Matalas brings all the right corrections - there's a distinct tonal shift toward optimism and lightness (writing-wise and literally, with a brighter, more colourful visual palette), a decent amount of fan service, but woven well enough into plot not to be too distracting, threads being pulled in from previous ST serieses (similar to what Coto started doing when he took over on Enterprise) all the way back to TOS, etc. Although it doesn't achieve the majesty of Season 3, there's a tentative sense of relief that we seem to be in safe hands, at last.

Discovery enslaved a being to make their flippty-trippity-special-doo-de-doo drive work. This was more like what if you fed in Star Trek scripts into an AI and asked it to generate season after season of awful Star Trek and the AI discovered you looked at mushrooms earlier in a web search and decided to integrate that into the script. I still feel sorry for the actors who had to endure slobbering their lines through their dental prosthetics for the series. Would I were to sum this series up in it's ENTIRETY, I would compare it to a large space freighter, filled with the vile waste products of 1000 different alien species, that gets hit by a half destroyed, fully engulfed in flames Starship, that when they collide, both hurtle toward the planet. First the starship, then the sewage barge hit the up until then fairly decent planet, so that you had a giant crater of destruction that was then followed by waves of feces.

This is absolutely laughable. Star Trek Discovery will be forever remembered as the trek series that greatly divided the fanbase. They scream it is diverse yet omitted how the series is the first EVER, as of season 3, to no longer have a white male heterosexual character as part of the crew. Imagine if a star trek series had no Black characters or female characters etc. etc. Then in a final insult to the fans Star Trek Discovery showrunners used Star Trek's popularity as means to support a political candidate actively running for political office while NOT allowing the candidates opponent equal air time as is required on network television. Lastly lets all remember how this is the ONLY Star Trek series to finish in last place when CBS aired season 1 on Network television. The only reason this series has five seasons is because it is only available on a streaming service. A great many Star Trek fans are ecstatic that this is the final season.

We have had Star Trek since the mid 1960s, much of it was good if not great television. Discovery is not going to be included in that list. If anything, the movie reboots in the 2000s and discovery are making people miss the original Star Trek.

"The first black female captain". Not gonna lie, when you feel the need to point it out, it seems a bit condescending and reeks of virtue signalling. The show was great, but c'mon, are you really gonna pull this card?

Discovery is a large disappointment and some of the worst writing in trek history. Thankfully the other shows had better writing. Strange new worlds is very good

You ruined Star Trek, only the third season of Picard was great 😐

Star Trek Discovery was ruined by unnecessary wokeness(first season was an absolute joke). Yes, Star Trek has always had a wokeness to it, but it was traditional wokeness, not this modern wokeness BS that has nothing to do with the current storyline. That's why the first two seasons of Picard was a flop and the first season of Strange New Worlds wasn't well-received as planned(second season got the hint).

"Traditional wokeness" aka people who were willing to accept civil rights to a point, but didn't want to see it get any more progressive than that. You can change the name for it all you want, but at the end of the day you're still complaining about the fact that the protagonists aren't white, male, and/or heterosexual. The fact that you are unwilling to just say that for fear of being flamed as a racist says a lot about how weak that argument really is. Picard was far from a flop, and I can't even fathom how you're getting that Strange New Worlds underperformed. I also can't help but notice that you left out Lower Decks and Prodigy, the two undeniable success stories that undermine the whole "new Trek is bad and no one likes it" narrative.

Discontinued as it will soon be (thankfully) Discovery is an awful example of what power can do and how far a low creativity and a driven agenda can go. It's a sad example for Star Trek, in its half a century long legacy...

They're a bit hard to compare, since Orville leans toward comedy and Discovery leans toward drama and long speeches,, but Orville feels more like classic Trek.
