Spock introduced the Vulcan mindmeld in the episode "Dagger of the Mind." Spock probed Dr. van Gelder's tortured mind to discover if McCoy's patient was delusional or there was some truth about what was really going on at a model prison colony. In "The Devil in the Dark," Spock mindmelded with the wounded Horta, revealing that it was a mother defending the future of her entire race. The Horta had to resort to killing the miners who thought the eggs were some kind of mineral rock (one of the eggs sat on Vanderberg's desk, fascinating Spock). The missing circulating pump, which the Horta stole but did not destroy, was recovered. Spock took a huge risk engaging in a Vulcan mindmeld with an life-form that was so alien yet possesses compassion, tenderness, even love and curiosity. That is why this episode doesn't tread the overused "mindless monster from outer space" storyline. And yes, I have to admit the Horta does look like a giant pepperoni pizza!

Here it is called 'Horta rettet ihre Kinder'= 'Horta saves her children'; which I like since back then, when I was six and it aired for the first time. It made us/me immediately feel like Horta was a living, feeling, tender soul. The crew had to understand it while the episode, but we already knew from the first minute and were on her side :)

The thing that bothered me about this episode is the staff of Janus VI does not carry a backup for the circulating pump stolen by the Horta. The circulating pump is a very old, and it is a critical part of the reactor that provides life support. Without it, the staff has about 48 hours to live. And yet no one thought about keeping a backup or two. Chief Engineer of the the miners makes a statement along the lines "well, we never had a problem with it, so we didn't think we needed a backup". Thankfully, Scotty is able to rig something up until Spock's mind meld convinces the Horta to return the original pump. I hope colony decided that maybe it was time to get a spare.
@WayneKeen

One would also think that the staff would be proficient in using tricorders, as they presumably want to detect minerals they want to mine. This would seem to enable them to track the creature. Of course, one would assume the same thing about the Enterprise red shirts.
