I was a huge fan of roddenberry trek and I actually think it is a far more accurate depiction of the future than most people think, considering how completely cracking nuclear fusion and automation will solve many of the worlds problems: food, water, global warming, ect... However I thought trek was at by far its best in ds9, deep interesting characters, phenomenal writing and great exploration of the human condition such as this episode. Gene Rodenburry himself was an army aviator during WWII, and flew 89 combat missions. In many ways, I think that this episode closely aligns with Guadalcanal campaign. The U.S. sent in the Marine to take it in August of 42, but lacked the naval power to securely hold the sea lanes around the island. For 6 months, it was back and forth fighting on the island, with the Marines nearly pushed off a couple of times, and numerous naval battles that both sides took turns losing. The battle of Salvo island is one example, as it was one of the worst defeats for the US Navy during the war.

In Sword of the Stars, there's a race of aquatic telepaths called the Liir who can directly feel suffering they inflict upon others, so they need incredible determination to fight. Members of their fleet are called Black Swimmers and do whatever they feel is necessary to defeat the enemy. The game's lore says that Black Swimmers aren't allowed back into regular Liir society, out of fear of what they've become. Or I guess I could have saved the time and just referenced TNG's The Hunted which explores very similar themes.

Every single time data has encountered an alien language or technology he's been able to articulate it within minutes. and considering the enterprise D had been destroyed by this point and the E was still being built, data should have been on detached service. he's the most skilled decrypter in the federation! It is kind of wild that DS9 never once, to my knowledge, outlines what the Federation flagship and its most decorated Captain were doing during the largest war in history. I hear there's books that go into it and they were doing missions behind the lines or for special events. In other words, Sovereigns and their crews were largely too valuable to risk in grinding attritional warfare.

Whenever space to ground attacks in Star Trek (Breen/Borg/Dominion) occur it is usually to cause collateral damage. If the Defiant had fired on the general area of the camp then there is no telling the damage they might cause to the relay/federation camp. This is why I never liked DS9 as Star Trek, especially with it being post-TNG. It explores fascinating ideas, but it seems really stupid to me that technology and culture would regress so much for the Federation. If DS9 actually happened in the same reality as TNG the war against the dominion would have been won in a week thanks to the almost daily federation technological breakthroughs or it would have been lost once the war actually started due to no federation citizens ever having the stomach for war (this isn't a bad thing). A post TNG war would definitely not be fought with living soldiers... This series would have been much better if it was set pre-OS or post-Enterprise...
