I liked the unusual shape of the USS Vengeance but hated the stealth-fighter colours. It really needed those colours to be broken up a bit more so we could actually get a good look at it.

Realistically, the ship (ANY ship) is essentially defenseless without screens and shields. In classic Trek terms, ships had both... first, a "force field outer skin layer" (essentially a replenishable outer hull layer) and second, a "bubble" around the ship (at a distance) which "deflects away" and/or defocuses anything directed towards the ship. Without both... using just plain metal... any shot, from any angle, punches through the whole ship anyway, using any TOS-era or later weapon.

I'll make this simple and this is why I no longer build models for hire. Better yet I don't need to. When you build a model like this or any model it doesn't matter if you can get it at a hobby shop or scratch build it yourself. It take sometimes weeks to build, 100s of dollars of materials, experience and in some cases like mine the modeler has a name and track recorded of working in the movie business. The last Enterprise D I built was an AM. I got 15000.00 for it. I should have got more because after 3 months of building and then the materials that's less than 1000 a week. Not good.Like any job you have to make a living. you have to be paid for it. And lastly you can't get a Porshe for VW prices. Sorry but that's the reality. So how could anyone make any money if I only charged a 1000 bucks for it? You got to find a guy that works from home, does it as a hobby and doesn't care about the money. There are plenty of them too. Another reason I don't make models for hire. This isn't meant to insult or put anyone down. It's just the view point from someone that use to do this and was beat down for over pricing. Oh ya...and what's a normal person?

Steve Neill I get what you're saying, but there is a big difference in this case: That model is not a one-off replica made custom for each person. It is the same model everyone will get if they order it, and I'm assuming there is a mold made after the first one, so 90% of the hard work is done on the first mock-up. If I was having them build one for my multi-million dollar sci-fi epic, then yeah, I could certainly justify big bucks. But this is not the case here. These appear to be mass-produced models, perhaps expertly assembled, but mass produced nonetheless from a master mold. _That's_ why I balked at the $9500 price tag. Unfortunately, practical model building is becoming a lost art, as companies are turning more and more to CGI, as they can achieve better (more realistic, more flexible) results. JW3HH

You have a point about the sleekness, I think it was partly designed that way to reflect the militaristic nature of the ship and partly so everyone knew that was the bad-guys ship. Seriously, the Narada was a sprawling mass of mutated Borg tech and this is a jet black monster made of weapons stringed together with metal, subtlety certainly isn't Abrams strong point when it comes to who's the villain.

On the other hand, in CGI, you can do things which violate basic laws of physics... something you can't do with physical models. Thus, most physical models are actually more rational than the average CGI design. And as for "moving parts," none of the "moving parts" on the JJPrise really add anything to the design, they're JUST THERE BECAUSE THEY CAN BE THERE. You'd never design a real mechanism like Abrams' team did with this ship.

lot you people miss point about starship ops. just because seen nx-1 flying over ww2 new york or tos enterprise flying in atmosphere not mean atmospheric ops are part of starship's forte. they never designed to make planetfalls, even ships with more atmospheric friendly designs like voyager or defiant. stresses placed on ships alone would discourage frequent ops, need really good reason to bring starship close to surface. there's reason these ships are equiped with shuttles and transporters

Yeah I agree with you there. Roddenberry was against all those stories because they weren't about hope & peace and they said he would have hated the very concept of Section-31 if he had been around when they first introduced it. Personally, I thought the Dominion War was awesome and I even liked the Xindi War arc... mainly cause space wars meant awesome space battles. That aside, Adm Marcus did tell Kirk & Spock that Khan was the best Section-31 agent they had and was building weapons for them.

David, Roddenberry wasn't ALWAYS the man he later became, though. He descended into that abyss after, during the early 1970s, becoming a drug abuser (and by many reports, likely an addict). Also remember that, Roddenberry's "control freak and credit hijacker" elements aside, he was NOT the only, or even really PRIMARY creator of Star Trek as we know it. Gene Coon gets more credit than Roddenberry does, in my eyes, for example, and there are many others involved as well.

greebles are the extra added-on plastic and foam parts the use to give a miniature details and a sense of scale- like using a cup lid to make an exhaust manifold- or using a clicky pen as an antenna. Aztecing is the layering of panels in different colors to look like added on sheets of outer hull plating to make the much larger ship. No ships are made from one large piece of sheet metal- This technique makes the viewer think that repairs and replacement panels have been welded or riveting.

Part of the reason that the bridge is put is a rather open position is simply because of the original idea that if the ship's shields are down, the ship would be destroyed in another shot regardless simply due to the yield of the weapons. Of course, doesn't always happen that way in the series/movies because thematically, watching parts of the ships getting destroyed and fighting on is more appealing than the ship being annihilated as soon as the shields fail.

first of all your welcome. i too found this discussion a nice relief from some of the other discussions i have had on youtube on your other point granted it was an interesting concept, but it looks like jar ajr settled too soon on an early concept design and should have taken the time to flesh out and think out this design some more. for example he should have deleted the heavy weapons turret mounts depicted on screen.

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah the Vengeance does have an exposed bridge but considering it's able to rain phaser-powered death on anything that comes close to it I'd say it's pretty safe in a 'Best defence is a good offence' philosophy. Besides the Klingons have their bridges at the end of long, thin necks and that seems like a much bigger defence flaw.

It depends on what the torpedoes are supposed to be. In TOS terms, these were supposed to be matter/antimatter warheads. In which case, these would have vaporized the entire ship, regardless of what it was made out of. So, clearly in JJTrek, these have a few sticks of TNT inside, likely ordered from ACME by the "Chief Petty Officer Wile E. Coyote."

If you use manual labor and allow 'money' to control how fast you can build it. If we used state of the art methods of production (that are decades ahead of the ones we use now), superior synthetic materials, latest science (which is 60 to 100 years ahead of anything we use) focus on the available resources and use FULL automation (minimize manual labor as much as technically feasible) and let machines do everything), it can probably be done in less than half that time - inside of a year.

CGI explosions also look fairly fake if not done well. It's not a limitation of the technology or technique, it's a limitation of the time and resources available. TNG was a weekly show. They had DAYS, not months, to create those "fake looking" effects.

The largest part besides money , would be space . I would want to build it on multiply levels . It would help to add to the authenticity , with the different areas on different levels . Plus besides the internal structure helping support the levels a section of the outside hull would help make it really liveable . After that it just finding carpenters and welders for the structural support .

The book "Dreadnought" was a reference to the Franz Joseph Technical Manual "Federation Class Dreadnought" (one of which was supposed to be the "USS Star Empire," which was the name of the ship in this novel). In REALITY, "Dreadnoughts" are a specific subcategory of battleships, with only one size of main gun, as opposed to other battleships which have a variety of gun sizes. Usually, dreadnoughts have the largest possible gun size... slow, unwieldy, ineffectual alone, but terrific in-fleet.

you havew a point. thing is vengeance bridge is even more vulnerable since it's open to attack from the bottom. as for your second point bridges are seperateable modules that could be switched oout for refits or in case ofe emergency. besides these ships are auxilary bridges just incase of battle damage or foreknowledge of heavy battle

Carlos, the real point is "why put the ship underwater at all?" There's no rational storytelling reason other than "JJ wants to show the ship rising out of water." We know how powerful Trek sensors are, and how effective transporters, or torpedo-casing probes for that matter, are. In any prior incarnation of Trek, the ship would take up synchronous orbit, scan the volcano (a VERY LOW ENERGY event compared to a single phaser shot) and drop the device down by transporter or probe.

WOW! blown away by models and attention to detail. Would love to have one in my collection but can't afford it. 6 to seven grand is unrealistic for a consumer version. I have hand built models of ships and planes that were within 300 to 1k which is well within budget. If you could price your models accordingly, you wouldn't be able to keep them in stock.

It is a pretty solid ship, almost TNG level, and parts of it like the arcing phasers and the autonomous engineering aren't on TNG era ships even. Makes me wonder if Starfleet had weapons and tech like this back in the 23rd century think of how advanced they'd be by Picards time.

Yep... in "Serenity," they mainly used a CGI version of the ship, but for the end-of-film shots, and most notably the crash sequence, they used a physical model, because the randomness of reality still cannot be effectively modeled in a computer.

Saying they wouldn't do that contradicts what was said in the movie. They DID do that. Adm Marcus told Kirk that Khan was working for Section-31 when he helped design weapons for them to fight the Klingons. The Vengeance was one of those weapons. Thats why they wanted to torpedo Qo'noS to start the war with the Vengeance taking a lead role. Section-31, the Tal Shiar, & the Obsidian Order, were all shadow government intelligence agencies often working separate of their worlds' public governments.

You'd also need skilled technicians and architects. So after a lot of thought i considered that building the USS Defiant or, at least, a Runnabout would be more practical lol.

Zenu, The thing is... you can target the bridge even if it's facing away from you. If you're hitting an unshielded, unprotected ship, a single conventional LASER burst, from a contemporary high-output laser, would be more than capable of burning a hole right though the ship, hitting the bridge from the other side of the ship, leaving a tunnel through other decks along the way. Assume that phasers are far, far more powerful... and (unshielded), every system on the ship is exposed, frankly.

I was trying to watch a video featuring real models of the Star Trek ships from into the darkness. It was particularly interesting because I believe these ships were CGI animated in the movie. Okay it's fine that you interview the model makers, but I would have liked to have seen more images and angles of the ships on display along with some detail explanations...Instead, I saw images of the model makers not the models...Too bad cuz they were cool models....Bronx Intrepid One...

Justin, In JJTrek, warp drive was not shown as it ALWAYS WAS in Star Trek. JJ, instead, treated it as "hyperspace" from Star Wars. See the "leaving Earth to go go Vulcan" bit. How, exactly, as the Enterprise not able to see what was going on in orbit around Vulcan until it arrived, again? How is that consistent with ANY prior Trek? In Star Wars, you can "drop out of hyperspace into Alteraan's remains," though, and that's what JJ did in ST'09.

I was thinking about that also, but STO is in the original timeline, and nothing that happens in reboot timeline will have any effect in the original. which brings me to another point, there is NOTHING to prevent movies or series in the original timeline, there would be no conflict. STO may decide to come out with their own "black ops" type ship, isnt there an episode where you are tested to see if you would fit into that "secret" organization I believe to fight the Undine?

Well first of all, it wouldn't be possible as the insides of the ship wouldn't fit inside the exterior contours. You'd have to scale the outside up to match it and that would present some difficulties.

if want get technical academy angle from roddenberry. problem is roddenberry had least few ideas trashed when vetted by others, and this academy thing was probably something got missed and should have been discarded if given further consideration because lot of crew not gone through academy together. disagree other point. preservers hinted during tos, and fleshed out by books. least strazinski would done better job than jar jar, example not have gotten that nightmarish redesign of enterprise

If you're talking about just a life-size replica in which you can live in... If you plan on building it without any supporting beams, then the engines would simply snap off due to their weight, or the pylons connecting the engine pods to the cargo bay would snap. Also, the dish would definitely snap without any supports. So currently it's not looking good for you. This goes without mentioning the sheer size of the Enterprise. So, in short, you're not gonna have one built any time soon.

"Could" is not the same as "is intended to." Impulse engines are essentially fusion rockets. In the vacuum of space, fusion rockets are (relatively) effective and clean. But used in an atmosphere... they'd irradiate the atmosphere... at best, it'd be like causing the Fukishima reactor leak intentionally. NOT a good idea.

Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do it. The idea that a volcano could put the Enterprise (or a shuttle) at risk is just another example of how little actual science the writers and producers of this series actually know. This scene was written JUST to give the "Enterprise rises from water" shot, without regard for the NEED for that to happen. To be consistent with prior Trek, they'd just scan from orbit and beam the device down. Or fire it in a torpedo. Easy as pie.
