I suppose Lost, intentional or not, kind of comments on America's sense of a general mood of dread and lack of transparency or answers during that time.
@queuesnake704
@queuesnake704 10 жыл бұрын
People felt connected to Lost because it was about very recognizable, ordinary people in extraordinarily unfamiliar circumstances with little to no answers accessible anywhere. And Heroes was about similar such ordinary people thinking they can do a d-mned thing about it. ... ... the battles between Sylar and Peter were epic, btw (or at least they should have been).

"4:20" - i define 'magic making' as touching someone's heart (used to sing, for years.. in Choir) while artists dont often create something tangible (grow food, nail wood together to make table, make clothes etc) it's so amazing what one moment can do.. illuminates, clarifies, encourages, touches, consoles... etc. Making magic is impt Mr Pine; do cont the great work of magic-making! =)

WWII fighter plane battles. Taken to describe the grittiness of actual dogs fighting. Cry havok, and let loose the dogs of war. Christ, dude, that was the whole plot of Top Gun and Ace Combat. Modern fighter jets are so sleek and streamlined that the lost art of plane-to-plane combat has been lost. Starbuck's crazy, rebellious Viper Jock in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica is a perfect example (which creates natural tension with Lee Adama's boy scout rebel). Hell, actual WWII veterans

Have you seen Wrath of Khan? Khan is an Asian name, yet Ricardo Montalban was Mexican. Plus, Khan was apparently imagined as a very Nordic looking person, which is why they say Benedict was so good for the role.

said that the Passage episode of BattleStar Galactica featuring Kat and other sick, vomiting Viper Jocks were the most accurate depictions of fighter pilots he'd seen on the screen, TV or film. In fact, you'll find a lot of things that were able to comment on a lot of the themes of the shadow side of America's War on Terror all throughout BSG in a way very reminiscent of Star Trek commenting on the Vietnam War and other issues of the day... only much, much darker. Amazing what you can do

Although the make-up was horrendous in Cloud Atlas, I don't think it was racist. The whole idea of Cloud Atlas was that history repeats itself, and to show the audience that characters, even if they are in a different era, they are still the same person, they used the same actors repeatedly. Jim Sturgess wasn't the only one who had 'asian' make-up, Duna and Halle Berry also had 'caucasian' make-ups in the film. Also the characters didn't talk like the stereotypical 'asians' as Mr Yunioshi.

I don't know..the Enterprise would probably win. It has target lock and doesn't need Manuel operating, making it easier for the Enterprise to pound it with thousands of phaser blasts. Second...yes the falcon is smaller. meaning it would be less difficult to bull into it's tractor beam AND a single proton-torpedo could blow it.

Kahn can not be a racial stereotype since as a fictional character he was genetically enhanced/altered with an Indian heritage and according to STID a possibly British mix. He was originally supposed to have come out of Asia which is also a very general term geographically. There's nothing stereotypical about any of that.

You know both conclusions are entirely valid and nothing new to Hollywood. One "classic" example is Mr. Yunioshi from Breakfast at Tiffany's. The character was a horrid racial stereotype of Japanese people. Casting a Japanese actor to play him doesn't change the fact that the character is a racial stereotype. However, the character was played by a white man in yellow face a la Cloud Atlas. 2 presentations of racism. Same with Kahn. A racial stereotype yet played by a white man yet again.

The fact that you assume that Benedict Cumberbatch's acting talent is the issue speaks very highly of your ignorance. Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch is a superb actor. I love his work on Sherlock. If orgasm had a voice, it would be his. But its not about him. It's about the fact that the filmmakers and the viewing public don't see anything remotely problematic of casting a white male to play an obvious character of colour. A group who are already underrepresented in media. You give me a break!
@Eldeecue
@Eldeecue 11 жыл бұрын
Agreed......the new Star Trek movies are essentially just a generic space action film with a few costumes, ship designs, and proper nouns from a far superior series of stories grafted onto them. There's not reason for them to _be_ Star Trek. Other than that people know what Star Trek is and pay money for stuff they know/what is familiar over that which is not. For all the talk of different cultures and races....there's pretty much only one in these movies: Western human culture. .
@hyola
@hyola 11 жыл бұрын
I will stop calling out obvious racism when everyone and everything stop being racist. And i don't mean people calling each other racially derogatory words. But rather the institutionalized and systematic racism that allows a white man to play a person of colour. You should ask yourself why you are so eager to deny that this is racism? I don't go around assuming every white person is a racist. Why do you assume every criticism is a lie? I liked the film while still acknowledging the obvious.
@Albruit
@Albruit 11 жыл бұрын
This made me want to watch the new one even less. JJ Abrams should never have been associated with Star Trek, as he admitted, he doesn't even like it! He thinks it is "too philosophical". He doesn't know a damn thing about it, that is why he made this bull shit "pocket universe" and just throws a ton of recycled Trek window trimming and catch phrases together, covers it with lens flare and calls it a ST movie.

I would be very concerned if Kahn the way he was written was cast as Indian. The character was a stereotype. BC and his dreamy voice disguised how shit the character was. POC don't mind POC cast as villains as long as they were written as complex and non -stereotypeical. Your "fact" about them trying to cast an Indian is false and you know it. Stop bending over backwards to defend racism. A remake of WOK as a sequel was lazy and uninspired to begin with given the creativity of the reboot.
