In the novelization of this movie, Scotty doesn't seem as reckless with altering the timeline. He explains to McCoy that he recognized Dr. Nichols as the man who invented transparent aluminium and that it was his fate to give him the formula. A predestination paradox. Scotty DID know who "invented the thing".

@@marcziegenhain8420 Nope. The Enterprise refit was the last Constitution Class Starship. The Enterprise A was a brand new vessel, originally named the USS TI HO, later renamed USS Enterprise. It was built to test a smaller transwarp nacelle than the ones on the Excelsior. That's why Scotty looked like he saw a ghost when he first saw it, and couldn't figure it out in Star Trek V, even with a Constitution Class manual. It's also the reason why on Enterprise D in the future he wanted to go to the holodeck and see, as he put it, just Enterprise. Not bloody A, B, C or D.

12:14 The punker who flips-off Admiral Kirk is Kirk Thatcher who is not an actor; he wrote the punk song based the existing punk scene and created his own costume based on the existing punk scene; he also created some of the visual FX. He knew the part of the punk was open for casting because he worked as an assistant to Nimoy, the director, and is the voice of the comupter that tests Spock on Vulcan. He got the part because he did the scene at base pay and gave the rights to the song for free. He had always wanted to be in Star Trek as a real Kirk who could meet the fictional Captain Kirk, and that is the sentiment in his gesturing and posturing and taking over the soundtrack. "I'm a real Kirk, this what REAL Kirks do. You're in MY movie, now!" And then he gets his neck-pinched. He was very happy to do this scene.

Actually, the plot is not as weird as you think. The Star Trek TV series concerned themselves with social issues. At the time, during the mid 80's there was talk about the extinction of humpback whales actually. If you are interesting in watching a couple of the original episodes, let me know. I can make suggestions of several episodes that discuss social issues that were relevant in the 60's when the series was made and to a certain degree even now.

The Enterprise they ended up on in this movie wasn’t rebuilt from the same one they blew up in Star Trek III. The old ship’s registration number was NCC-1701 and this one is NCC-1701-A. About Galaxy Quest, a funny story: Patrick Stewart, Captain Picard of Star Trek The Next Generation for the uninitiated, wanted nothing to do with that movie, as he saw it as a mockery of his work in the Next Gen Series. Then his good buddy Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) talked him into going to see it. Nobody in that theater was laughing half as hard as him. I can sympathize. When I went to see with friends a second time in the theaters, we were laughing so hard that I was starting to get embarrassed. The saving grace was that there were some other people laughing just as hard some rows back. And then the lights came on and we saw that it was another friend of us beck there.

The registry number on the Enterprise at the end of this movie is NCC - 1701 - A, the registry number of the original (or previous) starship Enterprise was just NCC - 1701. A year after This movie came out Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted on TV. The registry of the starship Enterprise on that show is NCC 1701 - D. This is beta canon and some of the main producers of Star Trek dispute this...but it just makes too much sense not for me to accept it as truth: The Enterprise A was originally the USS Yorktown that had been damaged by the probe. It was repaired and refit and renamed the Enterprise A. The Enterprise is a Constitution Class ship. A class that was the backbone of Starfleet for many years, but at the time the events at the end of this movie was taking place, that class of ship was no longer in production and new classes (like the Excelsior) were being I introduced. It just makes too much damn sense that the Enterprise A used to be the Yorktown. On to a different tangent... It also makes sense that it was that particular Klingon ship that was used for time travel, I mean the previous owner was Christopher Lloyd... After you are done with the Star Trek movies you have to watch Galaxyquest!!! Best Regards!!!

that was real unfortunate... it almost felt like an insult to the ship. Though it lead to something in my own headcanon... the Constitution-refit was a failure. The original refits worked fine because they were 1) built off existing Constitution-class spaceframes, and 2) supervised by Scotty who is a master at making jumbled engineering messes work. But since the brand new Connie's were built from scratch, all without Scotty, things kinda fell apart. The new engine design was sound, but the on board systems were an absolute mess. It also harkens to a line from the fanfilm "Prelude to Axanar" when Admiral Ramirez was speaking of delays with the Constitution - "The new class of ship was proving more complicated than we realized,... we needed more time" So, since it was more complicated and inefficient to make new Constitution-classes, and the new Excelsior was already good to go, the Connie's got phased out in favor of both the new more advanced heavy cruiser for exploration, but also the reliable and versatile Miranda-class both of which would remain in service for over a century afterward. This therefore explains why we never see another Constitution-class after the Enterprise-A is finally retired.

@@k1productions87 I thought the A was always broken because it was just the USS Yorktown (one of the ships nearly destroyed by the probe) that had been relabeled to the Enterprise. I remember reading that somewhere. It also was a sudo punishment for Kirk because he basically got everything he wanted and starfleet wasn’t happy so they gave him a broken ship
@k1productions87
@k1productions87 3 жыл бұрын
@@starexcelsior If it was just a matter of the ship, that might be possible. But what makes that theory improbable is the fact the Yorktown already had a Captain and crew. They wouldn't just offload everyone from their own ship just to punish someone else. Also, the display graphics we see behind the Yorktown captain do not match the style of those seen on the Enterprise-A at the end of the film. But then, the entire bridge is different in the following film anyway. The idea of it being renamed from Yorktown was an error, as those who made that beta-canon reference didn't read the details in the Voyage Home script. A line that could easily be missed, as Brock Peters (as the Starfleet Admiral, not yet named Cartwright until Undiscovered Country) just kinda mutters "Get me the Yorktown" A line I myself didn't even properly understand until watching with subtitles on decades later. Even in the beta-canon "Yorktown" reference, it was always stated that it was a brand new ship that got re-named, not a used one. It just wasn't built quite right.

Love this one. It's in my top three Trek movies for sure. I just love how inventive and how fun it all is. You don't always need a villain who's looking for a device to destroy the world. This one plays out like a heist movie, a giddy holiday, a comedic farce, a science-fiction thriller. Most of all it's got people we've grown to love and enjoy watching. So many great scenes, but I always get a kick out of Scotty and Bones visiting the factory, and I remember being terrified of the wom-wom-wom probe when I was a little kid.

Took me an eternity to figure out the obvious: The "Home" in the title didnt refer to Earth but to the _Enterprise._ - A plotpoint that was dropped during production was that Saavik was left on Vulcan because she was pregnant from Spock (because she helped him through Pon-Farr on Genesis, Vulcans need to mate every seven years or they die). - Interesting how the Story of this movie is similar to that of the first one: A gigantic Probe shows up over Earth, it cannot be destroyed by technical means so our Heroes had to use their brains to figure out a peaceful solution - The two Whales were realized using animatronic miniatures (and props for closeups) but they looked real enough that the filmmakers actually got shit from PETA. - I can't believe you cut out my favourite Scene: Scotty instantly getting the hang of typing on a quaint keyboard. :D Or the entire sequence onboard the Aircraft Carrier. - James Horner was unavailable to do the Score for this one, so Leonard Nimoy (returning as director) hired Leonard Rosenman instead. And his music has really grown on me over the years. So different from the other scores but fits this movie like a glove, I think. - Its unclear if the _Enterprise-A_ was a brandnew vessel or if it was simply another Constitution-Class-Ship they simply had laying around and just quickly renamed. - That this movie was so much lighter in tone and more humorous was very much intentional after the emotional and rather dark rollercoasters that were the previous two. And it payed off because non-Fans also flocked to see this Movie, making it one of the franchises big successes and directly leading to its revival on TV: A year later, Star Trek: The Next Generation started airing, leading to an unbroken 18-year-run of Trek on the small screen. Those were the days... Next movie is gonna be a bit rough, but its still worth checking out.

This film has a sequel of sorts in comic book form. There's a graphic novel called 'Debt of Honor'. Kirk has been encountering a destructive alien life-form throughout his career and most of the book is diving in to different time periods seeing the effects this has. It's a great read. But the story is bookended by scenes with Gillian as she studies the whales and flirts with Jim, and in the final scene we see George and Gracie's baby being born, the first whale born on Earth for hundreds of years. A really good, well-written and beautifully illustrated story.

One of the driving forces behind the writing of the script was a mandate from the studio: Nobody dies. Star Trek fans had been put through an emotional wringer in the previous two films, and we were ready for something lighthearted. While some fans may argue about how good IV is and how it measures up to the other Trek films, this is the most fun to watch.

FYI: The reason they were able to "build" a new _Enterprise_ so quickly was explained in the novelization of the movie. They weren't. What they did was re-name another, already build ship TO _Enterprise._ In fact, in the book, as the shuttle passes over the _Excelsior_ and the _Enterprise_ comes into view, there was a worker just finishing the painting of the "A" on the hull.

The only thing I do remember about the scene is what I've already stated, the shuttle passing over the _Excelsior_ to reveal the newly re-named _Enterprise_ (and the fact that it _was_ a re-named ship) and the worker finishing up the "A" on the hull.

@@filthycasual8187 As I said it's been a long time since I read the book (I read it about the time the movie came out, so we're talking over 30 years ago). Either way, renaming another ship is the only thing that would make sense as to how that got the ship so quickly. After all, it took 18 months to redesign and refit the original _Enterprise._ The Wikipedia article on the _Enterprise-A_ states: *The Constitution-class starship Enterprise-A was commissioned in 2286, at the end of the events depicted in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and is the second Constitution-class Federation starship to carry the name Enterprise. While the ship's history before its recommissioning as Enterprise has never been officially stated, several non-canon sources (such as the AMT/Ertl Model kit documentation[5]) have claimed it to formerly be USS Yorktown (NCC-1717); others cite it as the newly built (but not yet commissioned) former USS Ti-Ho (NCC-1798),[6] or the also newly built USS Atlantis.* I did have the model kit, so that's probably where I got that from. Could that also be where you got the idea it was the _Yorktown?_

Star Trek has always taken up social issues. The original tv show was loaded with episodes addressing racism. TNG in the late 80s and 90s expanded that into misogyny, sexual orientation, religion, and ecological issues. It's always funny when a "fan" complains about Star Trek advocating social issues...that's what it was ALWAYS about. Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) did a great interview with Neil Degrasse Tyson on the Startalk podcast about the early days, and how Martin Luther King Jr convinced her not to quit the show because of how important it was.

The Genesis Trilogy is the best, and after all the darkness of 2 & 3, this "finale" was such a breath of fresh air. The success of this one kind of made it hard for the next, because the studio demanded more comedy, which made the drama more difficult. Plus they cut the budget after the film started, leaving Shatner - who insisted on directing after Leonard Nimoy got so much praise for 3 & 4 - to finish the film with no FX. He only got to finish the film because the crew at ILM loved Trek so much that many of them basically worked for free to give the film SOMETHING - but thankfully the movie gods allowed a final film for the original crew with Part 6, which was a pretty solid, if not perfect way to end the original crew's tenure, bringing back the director of Wrath of Khan.

I haven't read all the comments but I wanted to add my two cents. The primary force of Starfleet have been the Constitution-class Starships. Those ships were all the same design. The Enterprise looked like the Intrepid, The Hood, The Potemkin, etc... In the case of the "rebuilt" Enterprise, its widely accepted that Starfleet retired the U.S.S Yorktown and just rebranded it as the U.S.S. Enterprise. They also added the letter "A" to the ships NCC-registry. Just an added fact, there has been enuf Star Trek universe timeline between the books, TV shows, movies and comics that there is even an Enterprise-J
