I still think they did Cochrane dirty. His portrayal in the pocket novel Federation was much better, and tied in well with Encounter at Farpoint, where Q mentioned they used to control soldiers with drugs (they show that time period in the book). What about the Falcon 9 From Space X, theirs been a number of successful landings upwards its a matter of time before its proven tech.

The main concern being that they appear to have launched straight up, which would cause them to burn up on re-entry (If you play KSP, install the Alcubierre Drive from Roverdude and try launching straight up to 900km.). However, they could have done a series of short warp jumps to change their orbit.

I'm fairly certain they ditched the warp drive in either deep space or orbit, and the cockpit landed as a capsule.

mlee2001 You forget what the word "astro-naut" really is. the suffix "naut" is a greek word. for all intents and purposes, naut is used to define an explorer. a pioneer. a frontiersman. and still very much means that today. an "aqua-naut" is an explorer of the seas, oceans, and other bodiesof water. a "Geo-naut" could be used for someone exploring the depths of a planet. A "helio-naut"might one day be used for someone who dives into a star (assuming we ever develop technology for that) to study how it works on the inside. An explorer of stars (directly) And, of course, the more commonly used "astro-naut" meaning one who explores Outer Space. I believe the most famous ancient example comes from "Jason and the Argonauts". The Argonauts were explorers berthed out of the ancient city of Argos. They explored the Meditteranean. Im sure other cities had such explorers too. The "Athenauts" perhaps. but yeah. by definition, Starfleet is an organization of Astronauts. perfectly legitimate word for them.

Last time an ending on a handshake happened in a movie in such an iconic way was in Georgio Moroder’s adaptation (music, etc) of METROPOLIS when Freder got Joh and Grot to shake hands with Bonnie Tyler’s “Here’s My Heart” leading out. Both scenes just finish out with the handshake and while we don’t know what happened to them but we have a good feeling things turned out okay.
