I also thought it was kind of weird how LaForge said her father had trouble making friends, when it seemed like Geordi was pretty good with friends. Women not so much. Of course we'll see how it turns out, but I still would have preferred the Conspiracy Aliens over Changelings. It's something we see a little bit of with an unfinished story vs. something we saw a lot of with a completed story. But like I said, we'll see how it pans out.

If they did use the conspiracy aliens, chances are they would have made them entirely CGI and I don’t trust those compositing guys to do it convincingly. What they should do is using practical effects, but that knowledge is almost completely lost in modern film production.

@@mysticmarble94 i don't think so. i still watch all 700+ episodes of real STAR TREK on a loop, almost every day, and i watch them with the same critical mind as everything else. those older episodes were written with much greater care, many of them by actual science fiction authors. and the showrunners of TNG and those other real STAR TREK series didn't let slip through nearly as many errors and logical inconsistencies as these hacks today do.

Out of all the pre-JJ/Kurtzman Trek shows, Voyager is my least favorite. I don't like the show much as a whole but there are still episodes I really enjoy. However, the glue that still holds it together for me is that I still like the characters, at least some of them. My favorites are Tom Paris and Harry Kim (their friendship is solid), and I feel even Neelix gets much undeserved hate. Writing good characters goes a long way to forgive weaker stories and there hardly seems to be likable individuals throughout the alternate license Trek.

The whole Picard killed them all line from Riker annoyed me a lot. First it was Riker decision and hence captain is always responsible. 2nd a Captain must never say that things are hopeless and everyone is going to die in front of a crew. The captain has to be a beacon of hope in the most desperate situation. If he said this in private to Picard is one thing but in front of the crew it would be demoralising. It would have been better if Riker just told Picard to leave the bridge while emotionally seething with anger than this out of character moment

I agree with most of your Nitpicks, there are however a few things that bother me about this episode. 1- At the bar, we see that a tiny device can project a holographic video screen. Why didn't Troy contact her husband via his communicator badge? Why can't they put that tiny holographic emitter in their badges to begin with? and if they can do all that, why do they even have view screens on the ship? 2- How come the changeling didn't change shape when they were running after him? at one point they seemed to have lost him and he could of easily eluded them. Or find a crack or a grate and turn into liquid and escape? Why didn't he change the shape of his wrists to make his handcuffs drop? if the handcuffs prevented him from turning into a liquid, how come he did when he could no longer hold his shape? 3- Why can they enter the Nebula at any point by navigating through the cloud/gas but have to exit through a hole out into space? 4- If the sensors don't work well due to interference in the Nebula, how come the enemy ship's sensors work perfectly at detecting precisely where the leak from the Titan is? 5- When they see the wormhole, why don't they stop, or reverse, or turn to another directly. Why do they SLOWLY fly into it not once, but twice from the same spot? 6- They are ready to warp "as soon as we clear the Nebula". They clear it, yet don't go to warp and wait until the enemy ship (maybe 30 seconds) takes it's time to fire their portal device. Why didn't they go to warp as soon as they got out? When they go though the portal, they are still outside the Nebula, why are they waiting for the ennemy to power up their device a second time without going to warp? When Kirk said to Sulu to punk it in Wrath of Khan, sulu did it immediately. He didn't wait around. WTF? These things don't seem to make a lot of logic to me. Even if I try to figure out some convoluted solution to explain it, it doesn't work. maybe you have another take on these and have come up with a great solution to these issues. Anyway, it'd fun to discuss.

1. The latest technology is not shown in this scene. Troi was simply shown on a screen. Frakes must have overdone it to parody the woman's role in TNG. Starting with the imprecise timing of "BEFORE". 2. Either he wasn't able to shapeshift for some reason, or the terrorist group doesn't want to reveal their secret under any circumstances. 3. No hole was named. They probably just take the shortest route. 4. The Titan leaves a trail. Knowing where the leak is is not important for tracking. Nor is it said that it is important. 5. and 6. The agility of the spaceships is shown a little slower again. The implementation of space battles is always worth discussing. This was about the introduction of the special portal weapon

Worf's action in ep. 1 still doesn't make sense as it blows his cover. He wasn't even wearing a disguise. He could have stopped Raffi before she encountered Sneed. Remember, he already knew who the terrorist was at that point. So, he put Raffi's life at risk and he blew his cover. Not smart. And then, to top it off, they go down to the same spot where they blew their cover -- no disguise or anything. LoL

Worf says, "How long have you been away from the Great Link" - with regard to the guy's sweats. Length of time away from the Link has no effect on their regeneration requirements so I don't understand why he would say that because the Great Link sent out 100 babies to "find themselves". Odo himself had been away for 30 years was it? Considering their time away how would those babies cope? Worf should have said, "When was your last regeneration"?

Regarding Seven locked in her quarters still. In season 2 of Picard they admitted they shot a lot of scenes for storylines without knowing the sequencing & stitched them together in the editing room. I suspect this is what happened here, they hadn't decided when in the bridge timeline Seven would be breaking out with Jack & it turns out they put it after Shaw hands command over than before when it would have made sense. Jack being attacked also looked like it was an option for a cliffhanger ending.

I do hate to say it & I’m not sure if anyone agrees but I still find myself completely underwhelmed, despite all the hype that this episode is ‘radically different’. I do agree there is more improvement from S1/S2 but it’s still the same darkness, bleakness, swearing, rehashing of old villains or enemies. To me there isn’t anything new, fresh, positive or light about this show so far & I feel that others watching this are overlooking the bad writing/scope of this show for those nostalgia nuggets which occasionally pop up. But listen, if the show continues to improve on this trajectory & eventually does start to feel like the Star Trek of old I’ll take that but so far it doesn’t appear to be happening with the episodes so far.

Agreed. From reading comments on a lot of channels, it seems that those who like Season 3 are enjoying the memberberries, and especially the changelings. That's not enough for me. I want Star Trek that challenges me to consider a moral dilemma, to think, to figure out a way to make the world a better place. And it would be nice if the Old Trek characters were not desecrated. New Trek always makes the Old Trek characters worse, never better. And I could have lived without Riker saying, "Who wants to listen to some old fart drone on about boldly going for 250 years?"

I agree with both of you. I'm still waiting for the "superb writing" and the "return to true Star Trek TNG" that all the shills who are friends with terry matalas or received the entire season to promote it online, have promissed us. it might get better, but so far it's the same old Kurtzman distopian Trek filled with memberberries. We still have Jordi, Lore and Moriaty to go. I'm half expecting a cameo by Cyrano Jones. On a serious note, I hope that Moriaty is well explained. He was put in a self-contained simulation and I hope it's not going to turn out that everything we're seeing is inside that simulation. Then again, it could retcon the entire Picard/Discovery timeline.

When the Founders linked in ds9, it seems like it gave them a hive mind. Even Odo when linked with Female Changeling lost his senses although he had alternative plans with the 'underground.' Riker has been doing some weird stuff in general. I think he might be a changeling. 1. He notices the changeling ashes when Picard and Jack do not. 2. He makes up an excuse not to talk in detail about his family "fighting with his wife". This way he can have an excuse not to talk about certain things the changeling might not have been able to research up on. 3. He stares at the changeling (in the yellow uniform) and they sort of acknowledge each other in the hallway when everyone else ignores him. 4. He acts out of character towards Picard on multiple occasions including yelling at him in anger. - I'm curious if there are going to be good and bad changelings involved since it seems like the main great link is still holding up their end of the peace treaty. Worf makes mention of Odo being his informant.

There were 11 scenes of two people just sitting and chatting the plot forward. This is not how TV programs used to be made. They used to show you what was happening by using a forgotten art form called acting. They used to employ writers and directors that knew how to achieve this. Sadly, most people have forgotten what good TV is and are happy to watch 5 action scenes with 'feelings in the corridors' separating them. I feel as if I am reading a book or that this a poorly acted radio show from the 1950's. Go back and count how many times the plot is just explained by talking. You could easily have the actors doing something, like repairing a system while they talk. Give this show a real rating based on that. Look at any old Star Trek episode and see the difference. This is truly made for a 'new generation'. The story is good but it is not Star Trek. Many shows made today use the 'sit and talk' the plot formula.

TOS was brilliant in its use of lighting, music, sound effects, special effects, colour, staging, etc. In "Balance of Terror", there is a great reveal when we see a Romulan (on the Enterprise's view screen) for the first time. The Romulan looks like a Vulcan. The camera does a close-up on Kirk as he stares in amazement at the screen. Just behind his left shoulder, Stiles (who hates Romulans) glares at Spock as we go to commercial break. That clever bit of actor positioning tells a story in itself, a story which will become crucial to the plot later. They thought of everything back then.

2 major problems for me 1, Picard and Crusher have their soap opera about Jack BEFORE anything is said about why she sent the message asking for Picard to help her, her excuse for saying "don't trust anyone" was extremely weak, but that was only stated AFTER they had their little soap opera about Jack. 2, when Jack punched and knocked out the security guard, 7 casually kicks his leg out of the way of the door, this is typical leftism, you can do violence on anyone who gets in your way, even if they are a crew mate following orders, typical leftism and not star trek

If this is the best then that is just sad. This was a terrible ep that acted like it was impossible to keep the children of Federation Officers safe. How on earth did Sisko or every other parent manage??? So far this show has ruined the characters of Picard & Crusher with this lost son crap that was done better in TNG where their relationship was settled. Crusher should be the captain of her own medical ship not this crap. This crap with Riker not wanting to shoot the enemy, not even to cripple them, makes absolutely no sense. It's like a different person when he got command. I was expecting them to act like they've done this before but no they made Picard & Riker fight like a married couple. Look at the battle he led in ST Insurrection. He ran as needed but when it was time he blew them up! They pulled this crap right out of their but & it was just dumb. They screwed up the Changelings & you call this the best ep so far, pathetic. A Changeling who holds their shape to long does not look like drug withdrawal they look like a melting candle. When one gets punched they don't look like a puddle, how stupid was that. I was trying to figure out what weird alien they got now then oh it's changelings, Really!??? I think everyone I heard singing the praises of this season, the only reason I am watching it, are just very desperate to see good Star Trek again & settled for this piece of crap with the only difference being this crap felt good to pass through when the rest was on the level of explosive diarrhea that can't be aimed correctly. I personally thought that the Picard Crusher convo was a really awful attempt to justify the big mystery of her disappearing with Jack. It isn't a terribly good reason, it isn't like Beverly, and they also fabricate danger in Picard's past as though he's constantly doing action hero stuff to make his life seem more dangerous. The introduction of shapeshifters fuels speculation and excitement. However, what has been seen so far is not satisfactory. The inspection, the motive for not handing over Jack, the changeability, Seven's belated suspension with Picard and Riker essential on the command bridge. Beverly was unavailable and chose an unguarded way of life. What was stolen besides the portal weapon went unnoticed. And the nacelles are so busy. There is no smoothness, simplicity to that design. Star Trek ship surfaces can be busy, like the Enterprise E. The Changelings on display here don't sound like the crafty, patient, and careful infiltrators/saboteurs I remember back in DS9. They caught wind of schemes going on all across the Alpha Quadrant with much of the Alpha Quadrant governments not realizing how much they're truly compromised; they only had "massive" setbacks through usually the slimmest chances of great luck. Don't forget, the Changelings really knew how to manipulate and torment their enemies psychologically using paranoia to their advantage. The writing here still sounds half-baked, even if it can still coast in goodwill and performance charm. Also, not liking what I'm being told about this Jack Crusher stuff. Beverly not informing Jean Luc of their child after all this time? I think he needs to give Wesley's mother another First Duty lecture.

There are fundamental problems here like what they had on JJ Trek movies and the other Secret Hideout/Kurtzman shows: they derive whatever "cool" concepts that was in the original canon but not understanding the underlying foundations and soul of them. Using Section 31 as either a hip spy agency or some thoughtless generic bad guys, bringing in the Borg but actually not using the established characteristics and parameters that properly defined them, having splinter Changelings without realizing that Founders are patient, crafty, and try to look after each other; they're unified to make a universe that ensures their own safety, etc.

Ummm...what? You are very generous usually but this....what? THis was an abomination. I will give two nods....the back and forth about 'ur number 1 now' and the ability to get riker's character down properly for most of the episode....I'll give them that. The changeling arc...WTF!?!?! These writers literally started watching ds9 around the time of lower decks new season and everytime they watch a bit of trek they SHOW THE WORLD THEY WATCHED A BIT OF TREK.....they clearly NEVER FINISHED watching ds9 tho! They got changelings WRONG COMPLETELY. Making them a terrorist sect who travelled to the alpha quadrant....and r trying to destroy THE FEDERATION? HOW CHILDISH IS THIS!?!?!?!? The dominion is HUGE EMPIRE, the dominion war was just a single battle to the dominion, they sent a single fleet to deal with the alpha quadrant. The backup fleet they sent would have destroyed everything if it didnt get GOD MODED out of the scene. The federation wouldn't stand a chance against the dominion if they sent their full forces. The liquids don't care about solids...they just want to be left alone and the way to do that is to form an empire that stabilizes the region and offers them protection....they only care about eachother. Why would they travel to basically another dimension that could never hurt them again just to takeout the federation? THEY DONT CARE WHY WUD THEY!!! It's assinine. The biggest offender by far is that line by Riker "YOU JUST KILLED EVERYONE ON THIS SHIP, GET THE HELL OFF MY BRIDGE" OR WHATEever he said....complete bullshittt. Riker would NEVER SAY THAT TO PICARD. EVerything about that line was WRONG. First of all Riker spent half the episode iterating the point that he was the captain and responsible for the decisions and had final say and everything was his fault if it went wrong....his plan fails, so he uses Picard's plan finally...that fails, so he blames EVERYTHING ON PICARD!??!?!?! IT MAKES NO SENSE! HE SPENT HALF THE EPISODE iterating HOW HE HAD CULPABILITY NOT ANYONE ELSE! Not to mention half the episode praising picard and putting picard-son time over the lives of the entire ship and crew MULTIPLE TIMES SO FAR......both riker and picard are the ones who 'killed everyone on that ship'...the fact they lied and lured a ship incapable of proper combat into this EXTREMELY DANGEROUS situation that they themselves knew would be extremely dangerous. RIDICULOUS HYPOCRISY. IDIOT WRITERS. And the fact they have people at windows looking to spot the enemy ship.....WTF?!?!??!?!?! Somehow the human eye is the only sensor that WORKS!??!?! B4 is in Daystrom and has all of Data's memory engrams, I think they grab Lore and B4 so it has all of Data's knowledge but with Lore's intention to hurt Starfleet. At least with the people checking the windows we know we're not back to a stupid window for a viewscreen. Why can the Enterprise E do big fast movements during combat, but this newer ship slower than a tanker? Why are the torpedoes exploding on impact with a federation ship? Aren't they supposed to follow the target, not just firing off into a straight line and not stopping until it hits something? I hope the changelings don't all look like blood and guts, as we've seen the liquid state in test tubes on DS9. Worf keeps losing and regaining his front bottom row of teeth, it's like he has his own teeth in one scene and then he has some false teeth on the bottom in the last episode which looked really stupid. Riker yells to fire everything they've got but then only fires 3 torpedoes. They should have been using phasers, and they could also have used the phasers to blow up those torpedoes. I'm guessing the bad woman will save the Titan as they could have destroyed it loads of times by now, and they are also flying the ship as if the nebula has only one way out, but in a real nebula literally every direction will lead out.

Hm, I just hope they don't do a reverse DS9 and what they stole is a bioweapon/virus which would infect all non changelings to either pfff liquify them or turn them into unstable beings. Also it would still have been better if the female window watcher would have been the Changeling not the already unlikeable guy, but I guess it'll always be the most obvious choices they go for in this season. (Like with how after the warrior talk it turned out to be Worf as handler) But the reasons Beverly gave haven't been great, especially in the context that she and her son are doing a dangerous job while apparently also breaking the law... so safety wasn't her biggest concern. Which makes Beverly quite the un-nice person and as usual Dr. Crusher gets a bit screwed by the writing (like for the movies). Also sure she gave the son the choice...but she could also have informed Picard about having a son but him (son) not wanting any contact and that he (Picard) should respect that, oh and also include a big fat apology for being a liar for 18 (?) years...which given that the 32yrs old dude is supposed to be twenty only leaves like 2 years for him to contact his father..or rather copy of his father as Picard died after all. Also good point about Picard quitting Starfleet and residing in a new mansion/vineyard/but still the same/Picard doesn't have consistency with previous Lore xD... that quite a few of her (It's a fake) worries are lifted. Also Beverly is still weird for naming her child after her dead husband who was friends with Picard. Weird... Since when Is Picard the aggressive one? Basically since the TNG movies and Picard (series) follows after them so yeah he's a loose cannon now. Also yup just for the artificial tension between them as excuse for "character development" down the line. Hm, maybe we will get a good scene later on where it turns out Ralphy is actually a changeling too who replaced the old one before Season 1 started and gets killed by Worf close to the finale. that would be great, also would explain her willingness to lie and torture if they guy wouldn't really be hurt by it anyway. The killing to make sure one one way or another kinda has the "If she floats she's a witch" feeling to it, as in it makes it dumb when one thinks about it, as we have seen in DS9 a phaser set on widebeam and a certain strength would also reveal changelings (right?). Hm, given that changelings are involved, would Moriarty and Lore be back or will that only be forms used by changelings and for the bait and switch (literally) for the trailers? Yeah, sad that "fire everything" doesn't include a single phaser mount on the exterior of the ship, I guess they are scheduled to be installed on Tuesday (or whatever the running gag was in Generations). Also didn't they lose warp energy aka the main energy of the ship? Like shouldn't the shields drop then and they could simply beam Jack out? But I guess it would make sense if they negotiate a surrender now (so they can copy Star Trek III with the turning death into a chance to live or something) given that it sems we see Vadek hm... Vedek...oh no a bajoran infiltrator xD Anyway... her in the corridor of some Starfleet looking ship/facility. I guess at this point I just hope it'll make sense in the end of the day and isn't just a series of coincidences without any plan.

Granted Riker is a captain in his own right now, but I can’t imagine him ever sending Picard off the bridge in disgrace. Picard dismissing Worf in FC made sense because he was Picard’s subordinate and Picard was unhinged (he yelled at Riker about Hugh in “I, Borg”, as well, so that wasn’t really out of character for Picard) But Picard was always Riker’s surrogate dad. I think they went too far in this episode in the name of conflict and drama. I’ve only watched it once - plan to give it a second viewing. Maybe it’ll improve the next time around. @@NitpickingNerd I disagree. It takes 3 seconds to ask for a transport to sick bay and 3 seconds to complete the transport. The lift is 11 seconds longer.

Mostly, I enjoyed the episode. The best from Picard so far, for sure. I'm happy with the rogue Changeling twist, but I think there's more to the story. Also looking forward to some paranoid "who's the imposter?" scenes. Also, I do love a good 1 on 1 in Star Trek. It's when they do the best battles. Balance of Terror, Wrath of Khan, Best of Both World's (mostly), Equinox. Arguably Nemesis, but I was probably one of the few to enjoy that movie. The whole concept is Star Trek at it's best. It's been long established that warp core coolant is toxic, giving it a name (I think she said beuterium?) is neither here nor there. It's fine. It's a toxic gas and leaking it works as a trail. Looking out the windows was silly, but in Wrath of Khan the nebula that interfered with sensors also filled the viewscreen with static. So not totally insane, just an advanced tech being useless situation, an acceptable trope. Most nitpicks I can handwave away. The one that I really didn't get was Picard going all warmonger. So out incredibly out of character. Was it a ruse? Maybe they knew about the Changelings? Maybe he's a Changeling? I just didn't like it. The way they worked together perfectly for the concussion torpedo was as I expected, but Picard constantly pushing to fight? How many times in the entire of TNG did he even order then to fire phasers except as a last resort? Getting away is the goal, not winning the battle. It makes no sense. Hope they explain it.

Terry Matalas has said he was inspired by Hunt For Red October, which btw is one of the best movies ever made so I don't mind this at all

If they had done the parasite thing from TNG, audiences would have seen it as a Last of Us ripoff.

DS9 was essentially a Babylon 5 ripoff but it still was a good show (with even better deviated distinctions IMO) regardless. You might as well say that the rogue/splinter Changelings are copying the Drahk (a servant race of the Shadows in B5) continuing the work their masters have ultimately abandoned with the conclusion of the Shadow War. Good storytelling would usually "forgive" similar elements.
