I was there for the premiere of The Motion Picture. In all this time, I have learned the primary and secondary hulls were rebuilt to the point that both are larger from the original. This would require a whole new skeleton for both. Obviously, the warp engines and nacelle struts are new construction. So, my question becomes: is there ANYTHING of the original structure of NCC-1701 that we can point to that makes the refit a refit and not a brand new Enterprise instead of an old Enterprise with a lot of upgrades?
@EgeSkywalker1172 ай бұрын
@@Malbeefance good question. It says the spaceframe stayed with the refit one. So we can say that the hull is different but frame is the same frame with new additions
@wendigos_eat_people71772 ай бұрын
It would not require a new skeleton for both hulls. The primary hull would most likely have an extension ring on the rim to enlarge the saucer. The changes I do see is the shape of the upper and lower bulges. They are shaped differently. But the deck plating and floor beams are most likely intact, as are the wall partitions which are likely been moved around a bit. so the saucer is mostly the original. The secondary hull as this video shows has a larger frame surrounding the original hull . They only need to do is enlarge each deck from the original to the new framing and remove the old hull plates and recycle them into the new design. Also the secondary hull for the refit has a lot of open space, cargo floor to the high ceiling, so they would have to remove some material from the original and recycle that as well maybe into the neck if it's not a new construction. The angle front and rear are different than the original neck ,so the jury is out on that. It's safe to assume most of the skeleton survived the refit , and those parts that can't be saved are most likely recycled into the new design in any way possible thanks to the industrial transporters. In the end we get a gorgeous looking ship .
@calvinnickel99952 ай бұрын
Not likely a whole skeleton. This was done quite regularly on ships. All of the load bearing keel and ribs/frames remained the same.. there was just localized structural to carry the sea load for things like bulges.

So, the difference in how Enterprise looks emerging from "night" compared to the next time it emerges from "night" is the result of 90 minutes of work.

The way I picture things happening is that it wasn't originally intended to be a MASSIVE strip-down and rebuild, but rather it was a bunch of progressive physical and operational upgrades to the ship that occurred over the course of the 18 months it took to redesign and refit the ship.
@DrVesuvius702 ай бұрын
The explanation I remember that was floating around at the time of the movie, which was pre-internet of course, was that the refit started as a series of minor changes that escalated, each change when tested meant that an additional change had tp be made to support it. For example, they wanted to fit new improved warp coils, but that meant a redesign of the warp nacelles. But they placed too much stress on the thin straight pylons, so they had to be replaced with the angled, flared ones... and so on until what started as a couple of months of upgrades turned into an 18 month build of what's essentially a whole new ship. So yeah, you're pretty much spot on.
@TheLAGopherАй бұрын
@@DrVesuvius70 I think another pre-internet explanation that was somewhat supported in print by the STTMP official novelization, was that the K'tinga class Klingon cruiser had become known to Starfleet when the Enterprise started it's upgrades,and was deemed to outclass the standard Constitution Class ships so much as to become an existential threat to the Federation. What had started out as moderate mid life upgrades to the Enterprise,became a test bed for all sorts of advanced systems coming right off the design board and being jammed into the ship to offset the advances in Klingon technology gathered by Starfleet intelligence. The Enterprise was in drydock anyways.And it had a Chief Engineer on hand with practical expertise pushing the Enterprise up to and beyond its specified design limits.Who could work with the refit team putting in new systems.

@@CaptainPositron another good question. Refitting processes are more effortless that a new build. Spaceframe is the same with the old one but with new additions. New tech, weapons and improved hull plating comes with it. But they dont need to build a new frame for it which is unnecessary (for this era of course)
@wendigos_eat_people71772 ай бұрын
Yes it would be easier, but the connies were very much loved by starfleet and the public at large.It's also a great publicity stunt as well. Also there weren't many connies around, most were lost, destroyed or severely damaged, so it's not a bad idea to refit those few ships that are still refit-able. Starfleet had a lot of resources and time at her disposal not to mention industrial transporters that can recycle much of the old ship that were useless back into the new design, and they did it in 18 months, that's about a year and a half ,and that's quite impressive. You most likely know that by STVl most connies of the refit type were most likely new ships built from the keel up. Unfortunately by that time the Excelsior class was about to supersede the connies

A good video. One comment, its generally accepted that the bridge module and warp nacelles were independently manufactured and attached to the ship towards the end of the refit. Leads the question what became of the original famous bridge module from Kirk's five-year mission. Did Starfleet simply recycle it?
@EgeSkywalker1172 ай бұрын
@@phuttig1944 actually the module integration that you said is from Kelvin Timeline. in prime universe, it’s already integrated/built with frame. So we can say that they recycle them (old hull plating and interior elements)
@phuttig19442 ай бұрын
@@EgeSkywalker117 actually it's pretty clearly established from the older tech manuals and publications from the 1980s and 70s that bridge modules of the TOS and Movie eras were interchangeable and could be swapped out on starships (its why the bridge on the 1701-A was different between Star Trek V and VI). Apparently not the case with the starships of the 24th century where the bridge is an integrated part of the ship. But then, it is only a show. I like this ship. I really do. But, my favorite one would have to be the starship Enterprise NCC 1701-E. Now, they said in a video that I watched. That all of the Enterprise starships could indeed seperate the Saucer section from the body of the ship. Its just that they never really got to have it happen on the orginal series. Nor was it explored until they did it with the Enterprise 1701- D. And they didn't get to try it with the ENTERPRISE NCC 1701- E either. I really do wish that they could've highlighted that in the orginal series and the last 2 movies. Now, the Enterprise NCC 1701-E did have a captain's yacht that separated from the ship. But, they never actuall seperated the whole Saucer section of the ship. And the captain's yacht also had the phasers and photon torpedoes. Which means the the Enterprise NCC 1701-E. Could seperate and make 3 ships for the price of one big ship. And it was more advanced in every way. It looked sleeker. It was faster. And it had a lot more functionality with it. Like the ram scoops could catch any type of gaseous substance. And vent it out through the naycells. The other ships, especially the orginal one couldn't do that. Again, I mention the Captain's yacht. Havin' it's own wepons on it. I just liked the Enterprise NCC 1701-E a whole lot better. Than any of the othe Enterprise Starships. And thats why. Just better functionality all the way around.
