One thing I noticed about The Animated Series is that it has a lot of sequels. There is a Tribbles episode and a Harry Mud episode and a Shore Leave planet episode, Yesteryear is a Guardian of Forever/City on the Edge of Forever episode and this one having a Eugenic Wars/Space Seed reference if not quite a sequel, and as noted it somehow has elements of Spoke's Brain. "One thing I noticed about The Animated Series is that it has a lot of sequels. " That's a great observation, Allan, and I think there's a plausible explanation. I’ve always gotten the impression that “you’re the most scrutable man I know,” is a comment that Koenig lifted directly from conversations he and George Takei had on the set of the original series. I've never heard any anecdotes to support or refute this opinion, but I can definitely envision the line originally being delivered in response to George Takei complaining about how many acting opportunities for Asian American actors rely on stereotypes. I leave the determination of how well or badly such an exchange has dated as an exercise for the reader.

I'm finally getting around to TAS, and I'm loving it. It's just so janky and bonkers. It feels like the writers were so excited about getting ideas on screen, without having to worry about props, costumes, or sets, that they just decided to swing for the bleachers every episode. Unfortunately, the budget was even lower than it was for the live action show, and it really hurt the animated series. Still, if you watch it for the low-budget, high-creativity anomaly that it is, TAS is pretty fun.

Check out and please let us know if you found it as funny as I do. In general, the big issues with TAS were that while TOS was something of PG to PG13 sometimes thanks to Kirk and the ladies, this being Saturday Morning TV they couldn't do that at all. That, and the fact that they only had 30 minutes to do these episodes, created problems. I'm surprised that the Magicks of Megas Tu wasn't voted the worst. Because "The Effing Big Vulcan" just didn't sound cool, besides it was left over from the origional idea about someone planning to make an army of Spocks. I agree that it had far too many episode worthy ideas smushed in. I bet butter, garlic and parm would have been enough.
