Growing up, this movie was hokey: I was a child of the TNG era. But over the years, I've realized that this was the Trekiest Trek ever to Trek, and it makes me so happy.

I love this movie, in no small part due Jerry Goldsmith's music, he and John Williams are my two favourite composers of all time, I probsbly own every Jerry Goldsmith score, the conplexity of his writing is unparallelled, he and John Williams are two sides of the same coin.

Agree, but personally I think the Next Generation version of this theme is the better rendition. It's a bit faster, with the orchestration favoring the strings a little more, and overall it feels more... adventurous.

@@tommy516 Goldsmith's is objectively the stronger score, as would be expected given Goldsmith's training, experience and talent. Horner did a great job for a young composer and 'TWOK' is definitely a superior example of scoring, but Goldsmith was the more talented composer. You judge the standard of a film score on the job the composer has to do and the circumstances they work under, not whether the music is more romantic, heroic, or ornately scored.

Jerry must have spent endless nights composing this. The sheer amount of chord changes going on here is staggering to say the least. It's way more complex than John Williams but still has that simplicity where the melody is concerned. Amazing.

KINDLE It's why Jerry Goldsmith is my favorite film composer. The way he builds an entire score from just a simple theme is incredible. If you listen to Rudy, you realize it's just made up of two simple themes but Goldsmith composed amazing variations based on those two themes, they never sound stale.

KINDLE In fact it took him a lunchbreak after Director Robert Wise told him his initial music lacked a proper theme and so he reworked his previously written material and played to the producer and director on the piano.

Yep Matthew's got it right, production was dragging out, and the scoring sessions were started during post-production. The very first orchestra run-through of this theme was Oct 23rd 1979 and the film released Dec 6th 1979.

I got to see this rereleased in theatres four years ago for the 40th anniversary and was blown away. Love this movie and theme! Very beautiful and so unique! My uncle is a huge Star Trek fan and I have memories watching this as a child and being blown away.

I still remember my first viewing of this. My three year old mind was absolutely blown away. The graceful form of the Enterprise, the haunting, alien designs of the V'Ger entity...this was the film that really got me thinking, "What's out there?" Sure, it has a slow pace. Sure, it's a retread of an earlier TOS episode. But this is still, by far, my favorite Star Trek movie.

Did you know that the main theme that we are hearing up above for Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith was also used for the opening and ending theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation?

That's the late great Jerry Goldsmith for you. Williams did Star Wars; Goldsmith did Star Trek. Williams did Superman, Goldsmith did Supergirl. Williams did Raiders of the Lost Ark; Goldsmith did King Solomon's Mines. Williams did Home Alone; Goldsmith did Dennis the Menace. And in an inverse way, Williams did Jurassic Park; Goldsmith did Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (a few years earlier).

The theme of half of the ten [and there are only ten] films (I, V, VIII, IX & X), and of the franchise as a whole from 1979 till 2005. No small achievement, Mr Goldsmith :D

I'm a huge Star Wars Fan and so I have a plenty of good movie scores. But this is really great, too. A very epic piece of music.
