I agree, the Q don't have human morality, but that does not mean they don't have "a" morality code they have to abide by. Q said it himself, can they just allow omnipotent beings to just wander around the universe unaddressed? And as Jen said she's a teenager with the ability to do whatever she wants. That also means her having the ability to take out her anger and frustration on people as she chooses. As with Dr. Crusher, Picard is bound by his human emotion and the societal morality he was raised in. But they often speak of human morality as superior or at least "the right way" to look at the universe. Q is only doing the same thing from the position of his society. He was raised think of their species/abilities as superior, so of course he thinks he has superior morality.

When she fixes the reactor at the end and saves Riker and everyone else and she turns to look at Picard and there's that tear running down her face - that gets me every time and it's such a simple visual. I mean, I'm old AF now (about to be 50) and now it makes me literally cry whereas when I was young it'd just get me a bit emotional. Such a simple, well done scene for me. Another reason why Star Trek hits on such great ideas and (literally) the human condition.

@jasoncaldwell5627Күн бұрын
We've already seen Q do something good. He introduced the Borg to humanity. Picard said it was possible at the end of "Q Who" that "Maybe Q did the right thing for the wrong reasons"- that it kicked humanity in the pants and ended their complacency. I think that Q for saw the eventual meeting of the Borg and Starfleet and knew they'd be unprepared if he didn't interfere.
@LordLOC22 сағат бұрын
Yeah, but by that logic, Q can see all of space and time (Doctor Who much?) so can see the future, and would know how that interaction would go. So, either he knew it would be very bad for the Federation/Humanity or he just couldn't see it. For the people who argue that Humanity eventually evolves into Q - it would be in Q's best interest to prepare Humanity, right? So, yeah, that might check out. I would argue he went about it the wrong way though, but that's neither here nor there.
@xzonia122 сағат бұрын
@@LordLOC Predict is a better word that forseen. It would be logical from Q's perspective that there was nothing between the Borg and humanity that would actually stop them from coming, so the two would meet someday no matter what. But if he'd not interfered, by the time they did meet, the Borg territory / empire would be so vast it'd be impossible for humanity to survive encountering them, so if Q liked humans and wanted them to survive, introducing them to the Borg long before they normally would have met would be the right approach to take to help humanity survive their inevitable encounter. SPOILERS BELOW If Q actually could see the future, he'd have known Voyager would end up in the Delta quadrant and thus humanity would have met the Borg long ahead of schedule anyway, and when Voyager returned to Earth and told them about the Borg, they would have prepared at that time and so humanity didn't need his intervention at all. Q didn't know that, though, because he can't actually see the future.
@Naptosis21 сағат бұрын
@@xzonia1 The Borg were already within Federation and Romulan space. Waiting for Voyager would have been far too late.
@xzonia121 сағат бұрын
@@Naptosis No they weren't. Q sent the Enterprise far outside of Federation space. The Enterprise crew literally say they're in "uncharted space" when they find themselves near the Borg in the episode Q Who. The Borg booked it to Federation space after encountering the Enterprise, but it took a few years for them to reach it even knowing where to head and having the goal of finding it.
@fizzywhizzbanger561018 сағат бұрын
@@xzonia1 Your point regarding Voyager is flawed; if Voyager were the first ship to encounter the Borg, they absolutely would not have survived the encounter, and would not have made it back to Federation space with any information. The only reason Voyager DID survive their encounters is because Starfleet personnel had been preparing for contact with the Borg for years by that point. We've also seen Q in both the past and the future, and he has expressed several times that the Q do not experience time in the same linear fashion we mortals do.

Great video! This story was proposed by a 17 year old fan who wrote a spec script and sent it in through the show's open submissions policy. I interviewed him for my book The Trekker's Guide to the Picard Years. In his original script, Wesley visits the Enterprise with a friend and the friend discovers he's a Q. (The writer wanted to play the friend and initially was hesitant to sell the story if he wasn't cast in the part.) The actress who played Amanda, Olivia d'Abo, is the first cousin of Maryam d'Abo, who played the lead Bond girl in The Living Daylights, starring Jen's most dashing Bond, Timothy Dalton. Otherwise, this is a decent episode, an easy and enjoyable watch but one which doesn't dig deeply into its potentially interesting premise. Arguably that premise was already done in Hide & Q, when Riker is given the chance to become Q, but it might have been interesting to have explored how Starfleet could have handled having a being of such power in their ranks, and the Prime Directive implications of her ability to resolve any catastrophe on a whim.

But Data noted damage to a planet that was *identical* to that which occurred on the Federation/Romulan neutral zone. That zone is relatively quite close to earth. This means the Borg must have already launched some sort of incursion quite close to Earth, and the Federation was completely asleep. My understanding of the Q based solely on everything you’ve seen so far is that they’re only supposed to “lightly” interfere. Not quite the same as the prime directive, but something like it. There is a non-canon (I think) book called Q&A which suggest Q has a plan to save the Universe from a bunch of people even more powerful than the Continuum but needs the TNG crew to do it so his various interactions are rolled into him manoeuvring them to where he needs them for his plan to have a chance. Everything from Farpoint to Borg to Data's laugh gets rolled in to it. It is an okay book, but the main reason is to see how they wrap all the appearances together - the Why of it. It takes place after TNG concludes so best read after you've seen the series and you know all of Q's appearances,

As for Q and their "morality" -- look at what you wanted them to be . They are not gods, and choose not to be even when they can be akin to gods as we think of gods . While not explicitly saying it, their morality was hinted at through the negative . Their refusal to act as gods, and viewing with deep suspicion those among their number who do come close to acting like gods or arbiters of good/evil . The Q are a bit inconsistent, and it doesn't help that the one that we're mostly familiar with is something of a goofy chaos agent .

According to Memory Alpha, René Echevarria (writer) didn't want to deal with the first season episode "Hide and Q". But the story felt odd that they focused on Crusher and Picard as the parental figures, and relegated Riker to being the teenage crush object. He is the one person who could really appreciate being human, then gaining the powers of the Q, and the temptations to (selfishly) use those powers. (If they didn't want to involve Riker as a mentor, then they could have him vacationing on Risa to explain why he wasn't being used. Bring back Ensign One-Night-Stand from "Man of the People" as the crush object.) And I'm glad that Michael Piller added the threat of Q execution, even though it was shoe-horned in after most of the episode was completed. It really would have been low-drama fluff without some tension to the events. "de Lancie was also keen to have the character return to being "mad, bad, and dangerous to know", but felt that this episode fell short."

Next up; DS 9. Although Q seldom makes an appearance in Deep Space Nine (DS9 for short), He has a few episodes in Voyager, and we even encounter an actual, likeable, Q. (Well Guinein did say a few of the Q were "almost" respectable).

16:25 I would have to disagree with you on this one. Yes, Q is a little weasel who loves to wreak havoc...especially for our beloved crew. However, he IS honest if anything. Whenever he the crew have faced challenges that Q has created, he has always said things like "you don't know if this is my doing or if it's natural" This time he actually said "Not THIS time."

Kevin's big sister ! The eminently crush-worthy Olivia D'abo :). Q is kind of TNG's take on a capricious, Greek Pantheon style god i'd say - on one level a "bad guy" that toys with "lesser" beings and _could_ do so much good but doesn't. On another, he does _kind of_ try to "teach" them lessons and genuinely seems to care for Picard - he's _usually_ more *a*moral than *im*moral. In their own low-key, inoffensive sci-fi metaphor way, the show uses Q to question aspects of theistic religions I think. And John de Lancie is so much fun to watch being douchey :).

FYI - There’s an interesting episode of Voyager, about the right to end one’s own life, which largely takes place in the Continuum.

We actually visit the Continuum in Star Trek: Voyager. Just one more reason to put that series on the watchlist.

I thought a missed opportunity with this story was to draw on Riker's experience with the Q power.

I cant remember if you saw it, but the girl here is the same one from "Conan the Destroyer". The girl that is supposed to be sacrificed. That was only a few years before this episode aired.

I just noticed how the lady Q was hugging the dogs, and Q turned Beverly into a dog, and then the lady Q hugs Beverly at the end scene was so funny😅

I think if he manipulated the last incident he would not have been able to resist gloating or sending a final jab in Picard's direction.

And sadly, we never saw Amanda again. I was so hoping she'd get a guest spot in the last season of Picard.

The question is ... could you resist the pull to use the powers? The ability to do anything (and I mean ANYTHING) is defiantly an appealing idea. I know I would choose to be a Q .. I think I could do a lot of good, at least in the beginning. Power like that tends to corrupt, and after a millennia who know what I would consider morally right.
@davidwilburn4734Күн бұрын
The understanding of Q is spread over several series with I believe the final pieces in Star Trek Pickard. You need to watch all of the series over time in the order of their release. After finishing Next Gen then it would be Voyager, Deep Space Nine, and finally Star Trek Pickard.

I don't know if Q does have an "angle". He is all-powerful. So he has an infinite interest in things, and an infinite ability for mischief. He knows there are no consequences, for him at least (as long as the Q's don't disown him). Picard, a neanderthal to him, piques his interest. So he constantly tests him to see if he is worthy of that interest. As such, Picard acts like a kind of ambassador for the human race to Q. Of course, Picard hates that fact!!!
@Ferox21218 сағат бұрын
Its an interesting episode about the Q and a good stand alone episode. It is unfortunate that the crew / Picard never brings up the point that Q was made into a mortal once by the Continuum and that they might do the same with Amanda if she really rejects her powers. They still could have explained it away with that the continuum has to be united about this and they are not in this case. But still, in the end Amanda cannot resist the temptation to help others and leaves. And we learn that the Q seem to have at least some form of "prime directive" among them. One that at least accepts some form of low level interference here and there but they surely dont want one of their kind becoming a guardian angel / god for a specific species that lives among them for a longer period of time - even if they dont show themselves.

7:55 “Why does he want to _kill_ her?” I’ve never understood that part, either. I mean, if you have a Q who does not wish to be a member of the continuum, can’t you just take away their powers and make them _mortal?_
@mmattson89473 сағат бұрын
I suspect that the events of "Deja Q" explain that. A Q made mortal would either commit suicide due to depression, or be killed by any number of species that (any member of) the Q offended.
