Sort of off track, but on the same theme. There's an episode of The Simpson's where Bart is speaking English and then switches over to French mid-sentence. I can't figure out how they would do this if the whole episode is dubbed into French. What makes it more difficult is that in the English part of the sentence he's bemoaning the fact that he can't speak French.

Hearing someone else's voice coming out of LeVar and Brent's mouths is surprisingly weird for me. I guess this must be what it is like for Japanese anime fans when they hear dubs of their favorite shows.

I was in Austria (from the USA) and The X-Files came on. The German dub for Mulder was sort of surreal. Not just the language, but they used a dub that was I guess intended to reflect German speak ideals of a manly voice instead of necessarily someone who sounded close to David Duchovny. It was waaay deeper than Duchovny's voice. Knowing how he sounds, the different language wouldn't have been so weird, but the voice was crazy.

Listening to the Japanese version, I would have suspected that Data would have spoken a much more formal version of Japanese similar to his inability to use contractions in English, but I realize that would have required many more lip movements that would have been impossible to lip sync in. Perhaps in Japanese, he is more 'blunt' as it were, I always find language comparison to be quite fascinating.

They might have altered his speech based on rank. Data and Geordie are the same rank at this point in the series. Although Data does come off more blunt than I would have expected, so you're probably right about it being a way to make him seem more like an android.

By the same token, I would expect that, in all the Romance language translations, he would always include personal pronouns, and he would always, employ the polite 2nd-person pronouns. I think the Italian Data said, "Tu."

Funny note, Hochu-san plays a similar character, Sanada in Space Battleship Yamato 2199. In fact if you listen you can hear the entire Japanese TNG dub cast in that series.

Germany has a very long tradition of dubbing foreign language movies and tv shows, whereas other European countries have only started dubbing some decades later. I guess this was a result of the huge influx of US movies into Germany after WW2. "Synchronsprecher" (dubbing actor/voice-over artist) has been considered a "real" acting job in Germany long before other countries. I can well remember watching Slovenian TV in the late 1980s, where they just had one speaker for all parts (and you could still hear the Romanian speaker underneath, but only if you weren't too distracted by the Bulgarian subtitles *g*).

This is true, in the German version, they tried to give him a little bit more emotional inflection in his speech, so he seemed less... inhuman. You can decide for yourself if that is good or bad, as it is certainly a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it helps to denote that yes, he is a new form of life and yes, he does have emotions, just on a different level. On another hand, it maybe defeats the purpose, making him seem a little too human, too "you're already one of us, you don't need to try anymore" kind of thing.

One thing i love about Jordy. He takes Data's innocent ignorance of human lingo and social competence, directly in stride. And gives it a human twist or response. He does this more than anyone else on the ship.

I can say Spanish was very formal. We have two basic ways of addressing people: tú, which is "you" (a friend, sibling, child, or disrespectful) and usted (you an acquaintance, older person, authority, or marking distance). Here it's weird to see two great friends addressing each other with the second option. It would be right if they were in a formal situation addressing each other by their ranks. It's also Spanish from Spain. One of the languages only spoken in Spain. The most used form worldwide is Latin American Spanish (Castellano), with its own local varieties. Neutral Mexican is the most usual in dubbing. This is like watching a cowboy movie with everyone speaking Queen's English.

I was actually waiting to see the version in Spanish and I truly thought they'd include both the one from Spain and the one for Latin America. Having grown up watching every foreign product dubbed to neutral latin american spanish (I'm from Argentina), I have to admit hearing the Spanish version was not the best (one of my problems being the use of "usted" in a context that was far from formal, given the very scene lets us know these two are close friends).

It's the same in German, they all address each other with the formal form of address. I never really questioned it though, they are at work in a professional setting after all. In Germany it's not completely unheard of to address each other formally when at work, and then use the informal form of address in private settings. Granted, nowadays it's less and less common, but it at least used to be a thing.

In the French dubbing, "Vous pemettez?" is way different then "One moment". I would have just used "Un moment". But I'm from Quebec, not from France. The usage of "vous" rather than "Tu" would be unusual between friends. But much like Data couldn't contract words in English, he may not have known when to use "Tu" in French.

Well Data is still very precise and does not use abbreversions either. In the german dub Data and Geordi also don't talk to each other in the personal "you" (Du) form but the formal "You" (Sie). It's always interesting to see these differences going on in different languages when it gets translated :)

Interesting how they changed Data's dialogue slightly in French to match his lips a bit better. I love watching dubs, even in languages I don't know. Although it's always strange to me to hear Spanish dubs that don't use Latin American Spanish -- in the US, it's always heavy on the Puerto Rican/Mexican side of things, no lisped C's and Z's.

Watching this makes me so happy being Swedish, growing up in a subtitling country, not a dubbing one. I was listening to English dialogue every day growing up, it's not a coincidence that we here in the Nordic countries are so much better at English than the continental dubbing ones.

I was thinking about that, and my own personal in-universe explanation is that Data maintaining an air gap would be a pretty smart security thing. I was actually thinking in relation to very likely near-future cybernetic implants in people. Data does get taken over wirelessly a few times, but all seem to be related to ultra-advanced alien species (Masks) and Soong himself using something he installed (Brothers); however, Data's risk for outside meddling in his systems would be orders of magnitude more likely if he had innate wireless capabilities. I guess you could have a device that could be attached to create an antenna for wirelessly connecting to the same systems, but by that point, you're not really providing much convenience and just adding a point of failure or additional attenuation/bottlenecking of information over just going on and connecting via wire. My first thoughts actually came from thinking along the lines of Ghost in the Shell hacking becoming a real possibility as we become more likely to start having neurological cybernetic implants. For myself, if I were to look into something like that, I would want a naturally air gapped system. You could have a device that could be attached to create a wireless connections, such as and external accessible port with a small antenna that could be attached as needed. Even then though, it could be useful to only have that device able to connect to another static device through which all traffic to your cybernetics have to flow via encrypted channels. Maybe way less convenient; however, the thought of having your brain hacked is pretty terrifying. Also, you know they'd be trying to download ads and shit to you all the time, like magically you don't know why, you want a Budweiser. You don't even drink, and if you did you wouldn't drink Budweiser, yet before you know it you've bought a case of the stuff.

Hochu Otsuka is voicing Data and Mitsuaki Hoshino is voicing Geordi, if you feel like looking them up. Though, Otsuka's other credits involve such characters as Yazan Gable, Chibodee Crocket, and Jason Beck, so he's playing significantly against type (though this predates a few of his more iconic roles), while Hoshino's most prominent role for a western audience would have been the warden of Impel Down, Magellan (though, it's worth noting he had a supporting role as Andy in Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket). To save you further time googling (because no, the Japanese dub cast is *not* listed anywhere convenient): Captain Picard: Mugihito (Kyral Mekirel, Baron Tamago) Riker: Akio Otsuka (Anavel Gato, Wham/Wamuu, All For One) Worf: Banjo Ginga (Heihachi Mishima, Gihren Zabi, Liquid Snake) Troi: Gara Takashima (Lots of minor roles, including some Gundam series; married Banjo Ginga) Dr. Crusher: Miyuki Ichijo (Not many other credits, and the only main cast member not to have ever been in a Gundam series) Wesley Crusher: Akira Ishida (Jake Sisko, Luke Skywalker, Athrun Zala, Kaworu Nagisa, and a million other troubled young men/soft-spoken pretty boys) And as a bonus: Tasha Yar: Yoko Somi (not much, though her most well-known roles to westerners are coincidentally both older sisters, Atsuko Urameshi and Olivier Maria Armstrong)

Well, voice actors are allowed to give their own spin on a role if it fits the character. Data's German voice actor always gave him a curious and inquisitive, yet sometimes know-it-all undertone, which highlighted his curious nature but initial lack of social capabilities quite well.

In Portuguese, it gets even more so. The Portuguese language has the familiar second-person pronouns "Tu" and "Vos," but they never use it. Then they have the polite pronouns "Você" and "Votes." And if that still isn't formal enough, they say "O Senhor," "A Senhora," etc. I became interested in Portuguese because I wanted to know how different it was from Spanish.

So they got worse in Italy, too? The German ones used to be really, really good. The reason being that they used actual actors for the job and met in a studio with a producer and director. They basically did everything the way you would do today when dubbing an expensive animated movie. But all those German voice actors died between 2000 and 2010 and everyone's cutting the budget since then as well. Nowadays the voice actors don't even have to be actors and they record their lines at home and just send them online so there's no real interaction between the actors during scenes. So now it all sounds like crap. That's why I no longer watch the dubbed version of anything.

I always loved very very technical german, german in general sounds very formal to a danish person, even in informal "street slang" form because of some words being borrowed during late medieval or renaissance period. that a mostly used in formal or posh manners of speaking.

I guess my Japanese just isn't good enough to appreciate the nuance. In English, an important part of Data's character is that he uses scientific language and doesn't use contractions. I couldn't pick out any particular point where his speech patterns seemed unnatural or inhuman. I was curious if he would use particularly formal language, but not really.

Tonally they are all pretty okay. I mean all those that aren't the English original. The German version is kinda spoiled because of the "Sie". No idea why Geordie and Data would call each other "Sie"... that's way too formal for two characters supposed to be friends.

@@sarahwanowski3285 It actually does make sense. It's not common anymore nowadays, but back then it was still a thing to use the formal "Sie" at work, even when you were on a first name basis. Since they're starfleet officers at work, it isn't actually that strange for them to use Sie. Especially Data, who's not exactly familiar with how to express friendship and emotions at that time in the series. Yes, they never use du even when off duty or on leave, but that's probably just because it would've seemed weird to the audience if they suddenly switched after so many episodes where they didn't (they're on duty in most of the scenes after all). They're all high-ranking officers after all, and using Sie was (and sometimes still is) seen as a way to keep professional distance between you and your co-workers and friends in a professional setting.

The german version makes Data sound goofy, just like they do with Jerry Lewis in german. Why do germans give highly intelligent actors goofy german voices? It´s actually disrespectful to the actor IMHO

Why include all that intro over an over again? it's useless. Why even use such lengthy bits? This could've been made much better and shorter and the point would've come across too. I bet many forwarded through the bits as I have.

Oh my god, Data's voice is horrible in German, it's squeaky and flat. I saw Star Trek in German when I was a child, but now I am very happy that I'm not doing that anymore. Spiner's voice is much warmer and has much more depth.

Ich finde die deutsche Synchro von Data perfekt, allerdings hört man, wie schon erwähnt wurde, ein wenig fehlenden Tiefenbass der Stimmer heraus, im Vergleich zum Original natürlich. Der deutsche Sprecher ist eine Stimmlage höher. Dafür stimmt aber wiederum die allgemeine Tonalität und die komplette Bandbreite an allem anderen zum Original gegebenen perfekt, und das gleicht es wieder aus, und macht die deutsche Synchro für mich, neben dem Original für mich am besten. Am meisten hat mich aber die spanische Data Synchro überrascht. Ist ja quasi 1 zu 1 die exakt deutsche Stimme, und Betonung. ;)

gaaaawd I hate the german version so much! I'm Dutch and in Holland we don't dub anything!!! Subtitles for everything baby! That's why everybody here's fluent in english.

No everybody is fluent in english in Holland because your country is too small than anybody in the world would care to learn ur silly language, dutch is just a mix out of english german and others, just without grammar.. it sounds funny but can't take it serious..

That's one of the most ignorant comments I've come across today. Not subbing the media -> People are constantly influenced by the language -> People learn the language easily. Not being a big country, or not owning a very popular national language, does not mean the country is irrelevant. Are you calling America irrelevant because they did not develop their language, but based it off of English?
