I've always liked this episode. I'm female and Brent Spinner was quite attractive. He plays Data with this soft voice and he was taking an interest in Jenna and listening to her. That's really attractive. I would have given it a go too. Wouldn't have worked out, but worth a try. The Orville has the android dating the Doctor and their relationship lasts longer.

Data's gf is real looker. I mean cute by conventional standards. The Dr from Orville is not really CoverGirl material....and I'm not saying the actress isn't beautiful. I took some advertising classes in college and these industries have their cookie cutter standards. I don't buy many commercial products at all. I think that the whole business is pretty corrupt but, trying to pretend it doesn't affect the general average standard of beauty, just obfuscates the issue.

Trying to think about how such a relationship would actually go if someone had been able to explain that the point of a relationship is to be with someone who makes you happy and who you can make happy in turn. Lots of weird relationships that look distressingly like unhealthy codependency and creepy uneven power dynamics spring to mind. How do you make Data happy and satisfy his needs? Help keep up with his maintenance? Entertain him with weird human novelty? Meanwhile, he can provide for all of your needs, knows (or can instantly learn) everything about everything *except* forming a true emotional connection between equals. Uhhh... eww.

What if you're into, like spanking your partner? Dude can't feel either pain or pleasurable pain. And you'd know he never feels pleasure in any way, ever. I would feel so unsatisfied by that. It's been a long time since I've seen STNG but I do think that Data does have emotions from the start. He just couldn't feel or express his feelings as intensely as Lore nor could he recognize them for what they were until he installed his emotion chip. He was programmed to be much more mellow and reserved because it would have been disastrous for everyone around him if Data were to ever lose his temper over anything or panic in a critical situation and screw up. Data has shown that he's capable of caring for others, even more than himself, so he's definitely capable of love as well if given enough time and patience. Jenna's problem was that she was far more attracted to Data's good looks than who he was as a person. Yet he still did his best to make her happy.

Yes, i think they got the right actress as they needed someone who could be gentle and warm and vulnerable and she did a great job. Easy to watch and the B plot creaked along but i often wonder why do you need a unrelated plot if your writing is solid enough and theres enough material to have everyone part of this episode as the story plays out. They did it in voyager with Seven and the 1st officer with varying degrees of success; just wished they had better chemistry for that lot as the show could have been twice as good. hmm

I am remembering a previous episode where cpt Picard had his ship in a life and death situation where he had to make minute adjustments at the helm. He removed Wesly to do it himself. I thought is was a good call back to that episode since he did the same here. I believe, he may think himself the superior helsmen of the ship or that he just wants to be the big deciding factor in the possible life or death of all his crew. I do see what you mean about the computer possibly controlling better. Was thier a reason the computer wasn't used unlike the previous episode?

I'm kind of an aspie, and well I kind of needed a romantic subroutine. (I'm more Spock than Data.) I think Data dodged a bullet in this one. This Jenna chick who is definitely a simpleton just wants someone to do what she expects and read her mind. In the words of Troi, "I don't sense anything... not out there... not in here." They should replace Troi with a fortune teller. However, mind reading even for Troi is a waste of time.
