The Enterprise Staff passed on the opportunity to reverse engineer useful Borg Tech #1 they should have reverse engineered the Borg personal Adaptive Shielding... A nice little fanny pack shield generator for all the Red Shirts to wear - similar to DUNE shielding Never get stomped by an alien again. Beverly's kindness murdered millions if not billions of Federation civilians and Star Fleet personell. The Federation could have replicated millions of 'low power' civilian shields to defend from projectile weapons and physical attacks, and 'High Power' Star Fleet models with a larger bubble : defending from Vacuum of space, gas, bio, & chem weapons.

@@ondrejnovotny3273 Interesting prediction. Not sure that will be so, but everyone has their own opinion, so... They gave the "Family" episode a B and B+ (which I thought close to what it should have been, I actually gave it an A, but I'm Picard biased) and that episode is much like the pace and set-up as "Inner Light". He, without a doubt, was the strongest actor in the group...not to say I didn't like a lot of the other actors. Just that character fit him like a glove. So, I'd be a little surprised if they didn't give that one a B or higher. But I've learned not to underestimate human nature and its variability.

well it's stuff that does come up later briefly. But I feel that despite Picard being the one who initially wants nothing to do with Hugh and just wants to use it as a plan to kill the borg- almost owes it to himself morally to try and change them instead. After all, he was assimilated, and managed to be saved. In theory, much like Hugh, Borg could come to change. Morally it's a choice someone like Picard *should* take as a character. Though it also speaks a bit to the kind of goody two shoes mentality of the TNG era federation in general. It isn't till the Dominion war that the federation starts to *truly* revert to more harsh militarism

@@Gauntlet1212 I feel it's almost more essential given Picard's experience with the Borg. though it does contrast kind of jarringly with his behavior in first contact where he is totally devoid of that same compassion, which is the whole crux of his arc there. "you didn't even try [to save him]"

Right on the money about the Picard and Beverly being out of character/stupid. Thankfully story got better as the episode progressed. Also, the scene where Guinan tricks Picard into letting guard down was the best in this episode.

Why do the crew of the Enterprise think that sending Hugh back will spread his individuality? All individuals just get assimilated by the Borg and that individuality is erased.
@saturn580 Жыл бұрын
The Borg have no regard for the lives of individual drones, so why would they hunt down the Enterprise to recover Hugh? And why would the Federation attempt to placate the Borg when they have already attacked Earth and declared their intent to assimilate all humans? Hugh could provide crucial info to the Federation and help them defeat the Borg, which makes him a threat to them. However that same possibility should also justify the Federation's risk of keeping Hugh on board the Enterprise.

Picard, Guinan and arguably the Borg seemed out of character and too easily changed, for the sole sake of a narrative contrary to their characters, though at least Guinan was decent early on. Are the Borg a race, or a bunch of races fitted with toasters and egg whisks slapped on to become their own new shiny metal race as a result? If the Borg saw Geordi like they had for Picard then he'd be assimilated just as quickly too. Then again, the Borg always are said to adapt. Except all the TV episodes and movies require they don't so they can be quickly defeated. Showing the collective the equivalent of an MC Escher painting won't destroy them any more than having them listen to MC Hammer records. I'd give this a D+ except they were brave to do more than just action schlock and made more of it work than otherwise, and this episode paves the way to a potentially better sequel... I remember that episode, hence the use of "potentially". 🤪 Still, this episode could have been felt less contrived.

Loving this Channel. New Subscriber. I'm Kevin. Hi. I did the same thing you guys are doing, so I'm just gonna post my reviews in hopes you may invite me via video chat on a future review. Favorite Star Trek TNG Episodes: From most Favorite to least favorite: 1. I Borg: A single BORG unit is found separated from the Collective. While on board the Enterprise he is analyzed and interrogated to the point it stops spewing out the typical BORG threats and begins to question LaForge. What follows is a thoughtful excursion into cultural exchange with the enemy and the most fruitful ground this show as well as its other incarnations germinate the best stories and reasons why the show has remained beloved. This episode also works as a semi-sequel to Best of Both Worlds and this is best illustrated in the scene where Picard engages the BORG (now called “Hugh” by certain crew members, starting with Jordy and Dr. Crusher). And demands that it help him to assimilate the entire crew. The BORG named Hugh responds that Jordy does not wish to be assimilated” and that “Jordy is a friend”. After a lot of consideration, this is the one that I can watch over and over again.

This single decision is so idiotic, so catastrophic, it's enough to rate Picard as the worst captain in Star Trek. Picard, after being kidnapped and worked over by the greatest threat Starfleet has ever known, now has a way to stop it and prevent millions from being assimilated. But brilliantly decides "Nah, my personal whim is way more important than any of that" Not to mention that decision on later came within a hair's width of causing Earth history to be wiped out - with the loss of 60% of the Enterprise crew But yeah, im sure that wouldn't have looked like betrayal, or at least dereliction, to a remotely realistic Starfleet: and they would have totally left him in charge of the fleet flagship

There is no such dilemma. It is an individual decision to make. You can cry about people who don't want to take medical services for your benefit all you want it won't change reality. Also, imagine wanting a dystopia where people in power are allowed to strap you down and steal your organs for other people because it's for the greater good. You didn't need that half of your liver or that other kidney to live and are very unlikely to die in the process, after all, so why can't they? It is a moral imperative that you give it to them using your logic. You have to agree that this is okay. Otherwise it's your body your choice. It applies to all of those situations or none of them. Simple as that. You don't have to be against vaccines to understand the logic that you can't force people to take them without being morally bankrupt.
