I remember playing this game for the first time at a pizza parlor I liked to go to as a kid! I was so awestruck by the colorful vector graphics and not to mention just loved everything about the game: flying an X-wing, shooting tie fighters, flying to Deathstar to blast more stuff, and then finish it off by blowing up Deathstar in the end! This was definitely one of my all time favorite quarter munchers of the time! 😎

One of the things I remember as a kid was that it wasn’t so hard that it kicked your ass right away- you could get through a couple stages and enjoy some success before it got really hard. Unlike, say, Sinistar or Defender where you’re game’s over in 30 seconds. Also the digital speech was awesome for its day.

@@drrobert7543 Yes the difficulty curve started shallow but quickly got steeper!A guy I saw on 100 Death Stars could waste no effort, with a reason for absolutely everything. The arcade management began setting machines up notbto restore shields at the end of a level, which was when I began to get good at this game. Other games plateaued after abt 10 minutes but Star Wars continually got harder with TIE fighters,Towers&Trench cannons shooting more, and Trench configurations tuned to your errors.

In London the Master was a Korean guy who shut the machine down at 169 Death Stars.I started getting consistent in the trenches to do 29 Death Stars. Tips include using the force (ie not firing)in the trenches to gain an extra 100k points. Any shield loss between trench 3-12 meant whichever configuration of barriers took the shield got repeated from 12 -18 so if you couldn't handle that configuration, you'd not survive a trench. From Level 12-18 the towers were lethal.Tower pattern 12 was level 5 with 4 extra towers..not so hard. Level 13 was level 6 towers with additional towers. As level 11 towers were the hardest pattern, level 18 towers had to taken in a fixed route, either moving from left to right,or right to left, never changing direction. Level 11 towers were strung out in a line but if you missed the 1st pass at the tower tops, you only got one more chance. After level 18,the tie fighters at the start of every wave would swarm. Pinning them down..ie stopping them from laying down a spiral barrage meant they'd double shoot next wave.Avoiding hitting Darth Vader's TIE fighter prevented them from swarming so If shields got critical, itvwas best not to pin them down as one shot would cost one shield. Level 8&9 trenches had the hardest barrier configurations. They had these close split barriers then the walls with only one out of eight positions open..It was impossible to use the force down those trenches without losing at least a shield so you had to fire intensely. Steering the cursor upwards slowed the speed in the trench sufficiently to be able to navigate the close split walls, but the level 10&11 trenches had a gun position just beyond the single open position which again meant it was impossible to use the force in those trenches. Enemy fireballs went through their barriers while your lasers didn't..a real bastard when trench wall cannons fired double. The joy of this game was it was extremely demanding. One slip of concentration caused multiple shield loss especially on the towers because if you hit a tower you lost control of your steering plus lost a shield. I only ever played this and Battlezone, which I mastered, being able to stay on that indefinitely. Star Wars is better than ALL that era's games for its intensity, intelligence and its X-Screen meaning no on-screen avatar. If you couldn't think in 3 Dimensions, you couldn't play Star Wars.

There is simply no substitute for the 4-button flight yoke this game used in the arcades. We all do whatever we gotta do to fly our starfighters ... even though gamepad, joystick, mouse, or keyboard just don't really cut it. (Yes, it's true that you can buy expensive and advanced controllers for PC flight simulators. Maybe they're awesome for flying a 767. But they're useless for flying an X-Wing.)

I agree. It is impossible to play the game without that trigger mechanism. Also, keeping you finger on the triggers did not yield a fast enough rate of fire so when the TIE fighters swarmed their fireballs would overwhelm your shooting unless you rapid-fire pressed individual shots.

I beat this game at least once, as far as I remember, and felt like the king of the arcade and possibly an actual qualified Jedi. Most of the time was just watching the shields go down and then forcing the controller down as far as possible to the right or left to avoid the oncoming laser bursts. Then there were the up and down bar bits, which were tricky as hell, but you could just about pre-empt where to go. Finishing it at Level 10 was so exhilarating! May the force be with you - always.

I have an arcade near my house that has this and I swear I spend hours playing it. I am not as good as some of the old-timers that played this shit when it was new, but I still have a blast.

I remember this game having two versions in arcades. One version you stand up to play.the other version you sat down to play..

My parents had this in there bar back in the early 80's. I loved it. The closest to it that I ever saw was the star wars flight of the falcon on game boy advance. Still have it, its hard but fun!

I never experienced arcades in the 80s (because I’m a teen) but I got back from a retro video game store that had an arcade, this was there and I wasted 30 minutes on this game, SOOOOOO FUUUUUNNNN

Thanks for the video. I really want one of these games in my house right now. I love hearing the character voices and sort of reliving it (need my hands on the joy stick though.) One thing that might make it even better is the ambiance of other games being played in the arcade too. All the noise. That would make this great.

The local grocery store had the cockpit cabinet version of Star Wars in their entryway . My friends and I would save up our quarters and walk up there to play it . Good times .

You had to steer in one direction only.Level 3 towers were easy ..in fact level 6-9 weren't hard but levels 10&11 had tra0s set up which is why you felt they were in your way!At the higher levels the chip would memorize where you made errors then repeat that sequence. If you dropped a shield on level 11 towers, then after level 18,you might get three waves of that same configuration!

"May the Force be with you" on odd-numbered levels. Different text messages on even-numbered levels. No mention in the game manuals or literature. Wikipedia claims it's the names of the devs. This "text" grid pattern is apparently also the arrangement of surface towers. (I've looked but never been able to see it, maybe just rumour.)
