Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Chase Scene Test5 : Blender Animation HD

This is the Millennium Falcon chase scene of Empire Strikes Back that everyone knows. Part 5.
I am using micropolygon displacement for the first time in this series of tests, but there are some failures. 30fps.
The explosion isn't good either. Music, sound FX are not my own.

This is the best space sequence in all of Star Wars. Imagine how amazing this would look with today's tech. Still looking good with the ol models. Amazed at what they were able to pull off with no CGI to speak of.

They were already sneakers. The prop designers wanted to find the cheapest solution to the asteroids so they used sneakers and potatoes for them.

That's absolutely mind-blowing! My only suggestions might be to rescale your keyframes for 24 FPS, and maybe exaggerate the motion blur a little, and darken the shadows. Otherwise, you totally have it down!!

Always laughed at those two star destroyers running into each other. Just how much tunnel vision do you have to have to focus so much on the tiny speck you're chasing that you don't notice the other mile-long leviathan heading directly towards you.

Incredible work, especially when you consider it was done on your own PC and didn't cost millions of dollars to produce. ILM would have killed to have been able to use Blender back in the 70s and 80s.

The one thing that would be an issue would be that these scenes are HD and wouldn't really fit the rest of the movie. But, then again, in 1980 they wouldn't have used magnetic digital, but celluloid film. it would have just required transferring the digital to film...which probably would have not been expensive.

Because in ESB the ILM team put a shoe in as an asteroid. Motion blur and lighting turned it into a smudge onscreen though.

I like the fact you chose to emulate the scene exactly rather than trying to insert "modern" cg/film technqiues, like shaky camera or different style of editing. Could tell it was CG, but given enough time you could almost fool someone to believing this was the actual film footage minus degradation such as extra noise, garbage mattes, etc...

Inconsistency at the crater/canyon part. In the crater, The MF is flying towards the canyon with a left turn. But the next shot, from inside the canyon, the Falcon is approaching from its right. EDIT: I took a look at the original scene and while the Falcon's path is straighter there, the left turn/right turn does exist there as well. I am not sure but there could be a right-curve inside the canyon to explain the appearance of a right turn going into the canyon this way.
