So I’m not a Star Wars fan at all, but this is the only one of the movies I can remember seeing all the way through. In 2005 when this movie came out, I was 8. My family and I all went on a trip to the cinemas. Most of my family wanted to see Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, and my dad and I said “nah fuck that” and we saw Revenge of the Sith instead. He let me raid the candy bar, and we watched that movie together. The image of Anakin being burned alive is still seared into my mind 17 years later. But its a memory I still cherish because it’s one of the few positive memories I have with my dad (I estranged him years ago).

12:00 what Lucas didn't really make clear, but was (as usual) cleaned up by Filoni in clone wars, was that for Yoda to beat Palpatine in one on one combat Yoda would effectively have to become Palpatine. The Will of the Force already had a plan...a natural flow...to it that had Palpatines creation of Anakin come full circle and be his undoing.

Anakin is unable to bear loss. His 'love' for Padme is based on this. "I can't live without her." I know the Jedi in the prequels are usually criticised for a lack of empathy or understanding, as much as anything else (i.e. being clueless). But their behaviour is built on detachment. Lucas wanted Anakin in 'TPM' to be young enough for his separation from his mother to deeply affect him. Anakin never overcomes this pattern and he instead seeks to become powerful enough to prevent the things he cannot deal with from happening. Lucas could have told Anakin's story more clearly and consistently, but he did enough to get the core idea on the screen. It's not love, but dependence and a need for control that motivates Anakin.

I read these really big Coffee table books with actual notes from meetings... ESB is remembered best, but went $5 million over budget because of friction with Carrie & Harrison and most of their scenes like their stories got cut. By ROTJ George was bored. And the Prequels he had all Control but no Marcia, the Unspoken Soul of the Original Star Wars!

The novelisation attempts to add more weight to Anakin's turn. In the film we go from "must bring Palpatine to justice" to "lets go kill some kids" in 5 minutes flat, but the novel tries to do more with the fall. It isn't 100% successful, but at least it tries. As I recall, the novel suggests Anakin's home world thought the stars were gods and when Obi-wan showed Anakin a supernova it messed him up by showing the "gods" could also die and left him afraid of all forms of death giving Palpatine an In to mess with him over Padme's fate. So add cultural insensitivity to Obi-wan's list of fails.

@Rob D You said it ! THE best novellasation of a Star Wars book ever ! Mathew Stover seriously understands the Force, the Jedi, and the Sith. SPOILER ALERT The part where Mace Windu and three other Jedi attempt the arrest of Palpatine nee Darth Sidious. Stover does what George Lucas couldn't. We get a real feel for the power of the Darkside. EXAMPLE - Sidious dispatches the three Jedi in under a second. Mace Windu barely survives then goes into an 'illegal' Jedi fighting style that not only saves his life, BUT, almost dispatches Sidious. Great Rhetorical Question This is a great rhetorical question by Lucas/Stover, which is : Does Windu Mace 'defeat Sidious', OR , does the Emperor deliberately buy time to test Anakin's power and rub it into Windu's face. Personally, Sidious is too powerful for Windu. However, Windu forces dark force lightning onto Sidious, which melts his face and facial bones. Palpatine is left horrifically scarred. However. . . Palpatine was a Victoria's Secret Model compared to what Obi-Wan did to Anakin Skywalker. As I said l, read the novel as it is THE best Star Wars novel by a galaxy.

I watch much of this channels offerings but somehow I skipped this one. Correcting that now. I hit pause 30 seconds in though write down my comments in advance, since I have had them for a very long time now. Most fans of the saga knew where this story had to go. So all George Lucas had to do was "stick the landing" or "connect the dots" whatever you want to call it. Did he do so? Yes he did. Was this movie an improvement over Clones? Yes it was. Was it a great movie? - - - Okay: was it a good movie? Yeah I think so. Would I pull my DVD copy and watch it again? It's been a while but I have done so.. (would I do so for Clones? hmmmm. uuhhhh...) ============ Okay, watched it. S.F. pretty much said what I did. Thumbs up.

My issue with the prequel trilogy is not the plots. The actual plot of each of these films is fairly good, and has an extra layer of intrigue that wasn't in the originals. If we're honest, ESB doesn't really have a plot anyway, and ROTJ's plot is so thin that it starts with a 30 minute side quest and is further padded out by a teddy bear's picnic. But the execution... Of all three of them... Is just terrible. The tone dial just seems to be stuck in "Staid melodrama", except when there's "a funny bit", at which point all attempts at humour are extremely juvenile. It's like they're being made by someone who's read the script of Star Wars but never actually seen the movie. The first inkling I had was the remasters in 1997 when just so many OTT puerile jokes were added without any consideration to the scenes they'd been shoved into. It was like a 12 year old had convinced a studio to let him add fart jokes to a classic movie. Sharper dialogue and better direction would have turned all three prequels into classics, but instead we got George's vision.

But did Palpatine feign frailty against Windu in order to force Anakin to choose at the fork in the road??
@FrostedSeagull Жыл бұрын
Yes, he did. Darth Sidious just defeated three Jedi Masters a few minutes ago. NOTE: I am heavily reliant on Mathew Stover's brilliant novelisation of Revenge of the Sith. It's a MUST read ! ! ! Novel definitively better than the Film: - Darth Sidious literally dispatched three Jedi Masters in a nano-second, leaving Mace Windu the sole living Jedi. Sidious does it deliberately as in Stover's novel, Anakin sees the speed of Palpatine/Sidious and is stunned and, in this case, impressed. This 'Mace Windu did beat Sidious' , as well as the Emperor beat Yoda, when Palpatine tried to run away from Yoda, leaving the immortal lines: If so powerful, you l are Why Leave.

Honestly, I feel mixed about the whole idea of Anakin turning to The Dark Side to save Padme. Sure, it's a tragic turning point for Anakin, but The Dark Side is meant to be this variant of the force that lures people in with false promises of power and corrupts them till they have no moralities left. I think Anakin's reason for turning would have worked better if it was more to do with rejection from those around him. Like say he was expelled from the Jedi Order for his romance with Padme and faces scrutiny by the Republic for betraying his cause, with only Obi-Wan and his wife to help him overcome this. However, Anakin feels jaded and swears that he'll become more powerful than the Jedi and anyone, and he'll bring the Clone Wars to an end even if it's by himself. Soon he starts having force visions to tell him to come to Palpatine, and he soon begins training Anakin in the arts of the Dark Side, allowing him to release all his pent up anger and frustrations, till he's eventually corrupted and twisted enough to do all the evil things that only Darth Vader could do. The Original Trilogy always talks about how The Dark Side is a quick and easy path to advance your force skills, and that not being able to control your fear and anger will lead you on a dark path. Anakin's fall should have been a prime example of this. The idea of Anakin simply turning against those who cared about him just to save his wife from dying is one that I'm not a huge fan of, even if it does add a depth of tragedy to his tale

If there were any notion of chemistry between the two shown on screen then it wouldn’t have been so low stakes and cringe. Every interaction had, tonally, a security clearance screening interview feel to it. This makes sense on account of her having been in an ambassador role. How much of the supposed romance was Anakin reading the room wrong? Was she just spreading her legs to milk him for intel? We’ll never know.
@white-dragon44242 жыл бұрын
Better still if he was corrupted by the norm, power, just as he offers Luke in ESB. I mean, sometimes there's no figuring out Lucas. One moment he's ripping things directly from the OT and saying "It rhymes", then he avoids the totally logical idea of Anakin being corrupted by military and political power as he offered Luke in the OT! And why? Why does he turn in the end? For LOOOVE...Awwwwww!
@colonelmustard26522 жыл бұрын
@@white-dragon4424 I think the consistent trait between both seductions, as it were, is that Vader waits until you're backed into a corner to drop some horrible plot reveal on you. It's disingenuous and shows just how weak of a hand he keeps playing from. Why is he letting that old gas bag play him so hard? The character's entire sinister appeal relies exclusively on the dumb plastic mask and voice modulator. He's literally the star wars kid waving a shower rod in the air while wearing a straight jacket. At least Grievous was nimble as hell. Why downgrade if you're Palpatine's number 2? Is he a rube or what?? Very Elliott Roger vibes.

As paradoxical and ridiculous as it might sound, I have sometimes wondered if this film (and indeed the two proceeding it) would still be remembered if they weren't 'Star Wars' (if you get what I mean) or if they would have just fallen by the wayside. On the flipside of course, if they weren't 'Star Wars' but instead their own thing (again, if you get where I'm coming from) I wonder if the would be regarded higher on their own merits. As it is such a nonsensical - and rather pointless - question, I guess we'll never know!! 🙃
