A little person named Kenny Baker was inside R2-D2. Sadly, he passed away in 2016 at age 81. His last credited R2-D2 appearance was in Episode III in 2005.

Was there someone in R2? Yes and no... Kenny Backer was in R2 whenever you see R2 just standing on two feet or closeups where he needs to shake or act. When R2 has his center foot out, when he needs to move quickly, that is a remote control robot. A bit of trivia on it. When R2 is in two leg mode, if you look carefully, you can see dryer duct connecting the body to the feet. This was to allow Kenny to put his feet down in to the feet of R2 without being seen.

What can be confusing for modern audiences is that the original trilogy was “improved” as part of a re-release in the late 90s after the director went back and forced in a lot of tacky computer effects that really didn’t mesh at all and aged more poorly in less time. It’s sort of a tragedy because these edits effectively replaced any existing versions of the original, much-beloved films.

The thing I like least about the added CGI is that it gives fresh audiences wrong ideas about what technical masterpieces the originals were, two different ways: people that don't know the CG was added will get the wrong idea about what was possible in 1977, and people that are aware of the CG additions will think that all the effects shots (of space battles, at least) were completely redone. A few matte lines aside, and rough edits from freezing the actors in place aside, the originals looked fantastic. I didn't notice the matte lines when I saw it the first time as a kid, because I was focused on story, and on repeated viewings on cable TV, it was easy to just imagine that the matte halos around the TIE fighters were just an in-Universe artifact of the TIE fighters' deflector shields (or something like that).

The droid characters in this franchise are notable for their "sentient" personalities. Some of the characters do speak "Droid-Speak", the language that R2-D2 and many other droids speak. Chewbacca speaks "Shyriiwook", the language of the Wookies. He understands "Galactic Basic" (English) but is physically incapable of speaking it. Most of the human characters speak Galactic Basic as a primary language and many speak multiple alien languages as well. Luke can understand Droid-Speak to communicate with R2-D2. Han Solo can understand and communicate with Chewie in "Shyriiwook", as well as communicating with Jabba the Hutt when he speaks in "Huttese", the language of the Hutts.

Great reaction! OK I want to clarify a couple of things: when 3PO told the Storm Troopers they’re headed that way and I need to take my counterpart down to maintenance, remember that both 3PO & R2D2 were Imperial Droids, in other words there are several droids that look just like them in the Empire. Also when Ob-Wan snuck past those Storm Troopers, he used the Force with his right had to distract them; that’s why they didn’t see him. By the way Luke was an accomplished pilot long before he went on the trench run.

I've heard that Chewbacca was supposed to get a medal. However, Carrie Fisher was only 5'1", the actor who played Chewbacca, Peter Mayhew, was 7'3", with the costume adding a few more inches. She physically could not reach to put the medal on him, so they just went with giving medals to Han & Luke. When Obi-wan Kenobi died, he became one with the Force. Essentially he ascended to a higher state of being.

You’re actually watching the most current special edition of this movie with updated effects. George Lucas went back to clean it up and add stuff when the technology improved. R2 is a mix of remote controlled props, cgi in later films, and costume shells controlled from within by a little person actor. The one for the original six films was Kenny Baker RIP. Vader’s voice is James Earl Jones. You gotta have him talk! The giant lizards are called dewbacks The giant creatures the sand people were riding are banthas. They were elephants in costume! At least one. The sound obi-wan made is the roar of a krayt dragon, giant vicious lizards. It’s one of the things that’s been changed with the special editions over the years. It did not used to sound like a crazy demon wail. Telekinises, mind manipulation, sensing stuff (not all the time). That’s about the basic power set you get from the Force, and it’s not where it ends. Jabba is a Hutt It’s not that they hate technology 😂 They were taking out the cameras Apparantly the garbage compactor had a space underneath, that’s how Luke managed to be pulled under. A crossover with a disney cartoon actually shows it. In fairness to the stormtroopers on the death star (that feels so weird) they probably aren’t part of the search party for those specific droids, or were told they might be there. Only Vader is absolutely certain that someone’s there, and just Obi Wan Obi-Wan is dead, but not gone. The short answer of what happened to Obi is he became one with the force. Not all jedi disappear when they die. It’s explored a bit in another movie and more in one of the shows It actually gets retconned in a comic that Chewie was given a medal at the ceremony, though he gives it to a young woman he helps out.

The original trilogy was remastered with additional fx added in the late 90's. Some things were just cleaned up like the spaceship model shots, and other things were completely re-done with digital fx such as the lizard-like "Dewbacks" the stormtroopers were riding early on and Jabba the Hutt himself. Jabba was not originally seen until a later film as George decided to cut his scene in the original release of New Hope in 1977. The original idea was that Jabba was just a humanoid like Han Solo, so Han's line "Jabba, you're a wonderful human being." makes much more sense in that context. Between this film and the one Jabba makes his main appearance in, George decided to completely redesign the character and he became a large slug-like being. When doing the special edition version of this film he, I imagine, wanted to test the limits of Industrial Light and Magic's fx capabilities and stuck the Jabba scene back into a New Hope and CG'd the slug Jabba (which was much better realized as an actual physical prop with operators inside in his main appearance later.) Over the original human actor that portrayed him in this film. BTW the horned "Banthas" the sand people were riding were actually elephants in alien creature costumes! Yes C-3P0 was actually a man in a metal costume. (Who struggled in the heat of the Tunisian desert where the sand dune scenes and Luke's house scenes were shot.) R2D2 had a little person operator only in close ups where he was shaking or using his tools. In distance shots where he was speeding along on three wheels, they used a radio controlled prop. Most of the studio work for star wars was done at Pinewood studios in England so loads of British actors show up as Imperial officers and so on. The 2 most famous actors in the whole movie, in 1977, were Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin aka Mr Cheekbones to you) who had a long career in Hammer Horror movies prior to this, so would have been recognizable to a majority of the audience, and Alec Guiness (Obi-Wan) who had a long career of comedies and drama films before this. A fun behind the scenes story: Luke's house was built in the desert in Tunisia and then left to the elements when filming was completed. 20 years later they went back to shoot scenes for the prequels and it was still there a little bleached by the sun, but still basically the same as when they left it in the 70's.

Actually, one of the better parts of Leia's character, is that she NEVER calls herself a 'Princess', never makes reference to Royalty or status. When other rebels show her respect, it's clear that it's because she's EARNED their respect by being fully committed to the cause, risking her neck, and by getting her hands as dirty as the men. When she tries to boss Han around when they exit the trash compactor, she tries to do it on personality alone: "from now on, you do as I tell you. OK?" Han won't have it, he's too independent and badass for that. When she tries to influence other people, she usually makes her appeal on variations of: 'it's the right thing to do,' or on common-sense reasoning: "No wait! They'll hear!" ...When Mel Brooks did the SPACEBALLS parody, he made his 'Princess Vespa' the exact reverse of Leia: Uppity, spoiled, repulsive, entitled 'rich kid', with a superiority complex, and with explicit demands to be addressed as, "Your Royal Highness" (which Lonestar, the Han Solo parody character, never does, in contrast to the real Han Solo, who makes a running motif of demonstrating independence from Leia by calling her mocking versions of royalty/respect-titles. •••• George Lucas designed the first Star Wars film to be a one-shot stand-alone, as even he didn't think the film would be more than modestly successful. He had a detailed story for the rest of the trilogy, but went into Star Wars assuming that those future films wouldn't be made, that circumstances wouldn't permit it. But, he left himself 'room' to make them (for instance, by having Vader survive the Death Star's destruction.) •••• A year ago, I did a video on the first part of this film (Episode IV, A New Hope) on "What did R2 really say?" (A number of KZbinrs have tried this over the years.) My attempt can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6XJXpeJeteXfM0 Enjoy!

Star Wars was envisioned as a Flash Gordon/ space fantasy type of serial by George Lucas. It was passed over many times before Fox gave it a green light. Lucas gave up the rights to the movie to Fox but maintained merchandising rights. With this being a hit, and making so many toys with Kenner, made Lucas a rich man and able to grow his production studios. Lucasfilm, Skywalker Sound, and Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) were all grown from this movie and changed the landscape for VFX forever. You can clearly see the fantasy aspect with the mention of Wizards, Jedi Knights, Sorcery, The Force. It grows beyond that but for a more recent series that is more grounded but in the Star Wars universe, I highly recommend Andor as it's a precursor to Star Wars that just shows how evil the Empire can really be. It's more of a slow burn spy show, but has excellent production values, script, and acting. It's not everyone's cup of tea for SW, but for this fan who saw the originals in the theater and have been less interested in the stories that are being told surrounding the space fantasy stuff, Andor has reinvigorated my interest in the franchise. Andor is very grounded and is, IMO, made for fans that would like to see more and different stories in the SW universe. Oh, but if you do try Andor, I highly recommend watching the first three episodes in one sitting as it's really meant to be a longer premiere episode.

Yiva! Had a lot of fun...I thought everyone had seen "Star Wars" by now, so what a treat! By the way, the stormtroopers in the Death Star weren't just talking idly when Obi Wan went to turn off the tractor beam; didn't you see him wave his hand to make them hear something...what was that? Also, you corrected yourself when you mentioned you didn't think something would happen in the first movie...well, you then said there were prequels... Um...you were correct in the first place. When I was a kid, people lined up around the block to see this new outer-space fantasy called "Star Wars." That was the name. Lucas wasn't sure how it would do, so that was it. No "...A New Hope." That just showed up when "Star Wars" did well enough so they could have the sequel, then the prequels starting at "I." One last thought: I would call what Obi Wan did ascension to the next plane. Not really transporting because he was no longer physical, but any physical person strong with the force would be able to hear someone ascended. Luke could "tune in." :)

I've only seen a bit of The Expanse, but I have it, on good account, that it is not entirely science fiction, but rather science fact, to a degree. It remains, to be seen. @@calebclunie4001 “Hard” sci-fi novels are inspired by “hard” natural sciences like physics, chemistry, and astronomy. “Soft” science fiction can refer to science fiction that explores the "soft" sciences (e.g. psychology, political science, anthropology). So The Expanse really encompasses both of these terms, as real-world physics, biology, and astronomy are employed, but there are hefty doses of political science and psychology as well. You used the term “scientific fact” and i’m pretty sure i know what you meant, but i think Hard Sci-Fi is more appropriate. Hey, Ylva! Welcome to that galaxy far, far away! Star Wars is deeply embedded in global pop culture and is one of the few franchises to shape multiple generations. Star Trek is another major one. Star Trek is genuine science fiction whereas Star Wars is more space fantasy. The first one I saw in a theater as a little boy was "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. My parents -- and anyone else who experienced it -- remember seeing "A New Hope" in 1977 because their jaws dropped in disbelief when that seemingly endless Star Destroyer kept passing before their eyes in pursuit of that tiny rebel transport. Why does the saga begin with Episode IV? George Lucas was influenced by a variety of concepts and genres that he blended together in a unique hodge-podge one of which was 1930s serials that ended on cliffhangers and continued for many, many chapters. They initially played these serials on the radio and later as featurettes before the main movie in theaters. If you hadn't been watching the serial from the beginning and just showed up casually on any old weekend, you'd find yourself in the middle of a story. This is called "in media res." Lucas was trying to recreate that sensation of walking into the middle of a story. Originally, the film was just called "Star Wars" because there were no expectations of sequels. As the saga evolved, the episodes were numbered and given subtitles. That's why Star Wars begins with Episode 4, "A New Hope". Other influences were World War II aerial dogfight footage, Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi propaganda films for the fascistic imagery, Eastern Daoist philosophy, Flash Gordon serials, Akira Kurosawa's samurai epics, spaghetti Westerns, Errol Flynn swashbucklers, Edgar Rice Burroughs' sword-and-planet fiction, Frank Frazetta paintings and Joseph Campbell's scholarly writing on the hero's journey, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". The reason these films struck a chord with worldwide audiences is because they tapped into both universal archetypes and specific images from a variety of cultural sources. The non-CGI, PRACTICAL special effects were a quantum leap ahead of anything current and still hold up today. To promote the Prequel trilogy of the 2000's, Lucas remastered the Classic trilogy with DIGITAL effects which is why some elements look computer-generated. The two most narrative-oriented digital additions occur on Tatooine. In one, you get an early glimpse of Jabba the Hutt and the bounty hunter Boba Fett. This was cool. Jabba was originally played by a heavy-set man before being digitally rendered as a large slug which is why Han refers to him as a human being! In the other, the bounty hunter Greedo, who corners Han in the cantina, is shown to fire his blaster first whereas, originally, Han Solo fired pre-emptively under the table bushwhacking Greedo. This demonstrated Solo's rough, dangerous nature. The change caused a good deal of outrage but we're stuck with it now! Lol. Artoo (R2-D2) is probably the smartest character in the whole franchise! Little person actor Kenny Baker operated the droid from within! Artoo is a type of droid called an ASTROMECH which are like ambulatory Swiss Army knives whose function is to serve as an onboard mechanic for starships. The two droids are meant to be the WITNESSES of the saga and appear in 11 of the 12 films! Lucas got the idea of servant witnesses from Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic, "The Hidden Fortress". Threepio (C-3PO) didn't forget who Leia was. He was playing dumb by answering truthfully but vaguely so as not to pique his new master's curiosity. They had been through an ordeal and found safe harbor. He didn't want to rock the boat. Quiet orderliness is all he is programmed for as a PROTOCOL DROID yet adventure always finds him. Wilhuff Tarkin is a Grand Moff which is a military term denoting his administrative authority over multiple sectors of the galaxy. Tarkin is top brass in the military and, under the Emperor's totalitarian regime, the military has replaced the civilian government. During the briefing, we are informed that the Senate has been abolished. Vader is the Emperor's enforcer but doesn't hold a political title or military rank. Tarkin is the man in charge of the nuts and bolts. Venerated actor Peter Cushing, known for playing Dr. Frankenstein, Van Helsing and Sherlock Holmes, portrayed the evil bureaucrat so soulless he could casually order the destruction of a planet teeming with billions and so respected even Vader deferred to his commands! Leia Organa is the Princess of Alderaan. There are millions of civilizations in the galaxy with a monarchic government. Most of them are obscure. Alderaan's civilization is ancient and it is one of the founding worlds of the Republic so many of the civilized worlds of the Galactic Core would be familiar with her family especially since she is a member of the Senate. However, Tatooine is in the Outer Rim beyond the jurisdiction of the centralized government so there's little reason a farmboy like Luke would know who she is. The climactic duel between Kenobi and Vader looks stiff and lacks the visceral impact of a more dynamic duel because Sir Alec Guiness was an elderly gent, the Vader suit allowed for a limited range of motion and the lightsaber props kept shattering with hard impacts. A KZbin fan called FXitinPost crafted an incredibly thrilling edit that lends the scene all the pizzazz it was lacking. It's called SC-38 RE-IMAGINED! Check it out AFTER you see "Revenge of the Sith". Han received a medal for coming through in the clutch but, as his first mate, Chewie deserved one, too! The poor Wookiee has to wait 35 years for validation! The opening crawl relates the events of "Rogue One" which concludes just hours before "A New Hope" begins! Don't skip it as it is one of the best Star Wars films around! If you would like to see more of Han Solo, I highly recommend you not skip "Solo" either which tells the origin story of Han. It's an underrated Star Wars film and tremendous fun!

Not sure if this is considered a spoiler for you or not, since you were questioning.... but Obi-Wan Kenobi is dead. He died. But when he said "If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine." This is what he means. Won't go into the details but there's other movies, comics, books, animated and live action series that tell what he did and I don't think you're going to get that far so suffice to say his physical body died.

I saw this movie on the day it opened in 1977. That's not a boast, it was simply my day off and I saw that a sci-fi movie was showing at the theater down the road. I hadn't seen a preview or even heard the name Star Wars. There were maybe 20 people in the theater. I was blown away. I'd never seen anything like it before. Most sci-fi movies back then were pretty cheesy. I called my brother that night and told him we had to go see it. A week later we went to the theater and the line was around the building. We couldn't get into any showing that day.

some fun with sci-fi and real physics: because of "equal and opposite reaction", blasters like the ones in Star Wars could absolutely use 'silencers' the way we know them, they aren't actually directed energy weapons with a beam but instead a variety of "plasma rifle" that is taking a small amount of gas (in Star Wars it's something called Tibanna) and exciting it into a wad of plasma and then projecting the bundle of plasma out of the weapon. Plasma weapons in real life have to use strong magnets working in very precise tolerances to move the plasma around and contain it- and have very short range. In universe, the reason most people don't use normal guns in this universe is that "Plasteel" armor like the Storm Troopers wear is much stronger than it appears and can protect against bullets and less destructive weapons very effectively.

There is so much about the Star Wars universe that just wasn't in place when these movies came out. The world is confusing, Jedi are confusing, the Force is confusing but the world building takes place as the years go by. Lucas was picky about people creating fan fiction around Star Wars in the beginning. For the most part he was ok with comics and novels and so forth but he considered nothing but what he puts in his movies the main story. You are also watching a remastered version so this is more than what we had when the movies came out. Its not until the prequels do they really explain things and even then after Lucas sells the SW properties to Disney do things get rewritten or changed again. Keep in mind Lucas wanted everything simple for 7 to 15 year olds. As we grew up we lost the charm of the experience but the new 7 to 15 year olds would experience things all over again. Now that Lucas Entertain is free from George Lucas they do not hold onto that vision that everything should be made just for 7 to 15 year olds. Fans have also gone crazy in Star Wars. The best thing to do is to not listen to anyone's suggestions and just watch what you want to watch and decide what is good and bad for yourself. Star Wars fans will bicker and argue until the end of the world about what is good and bad and what is canon. Just enjoy. Obi Wan is dead. You will learn that the force can do things even beyond death if one is advanced enough.

John Williams is such an amazing composer. Even at 90yrs old he’s still putting out great music. Between George Lucas and Ralph McQuarrie they created an amazing world. If you get a chance look up Ralph McQuarrie and see his artwork he’s done. The scene where the Sand Person (Tusken Raider) was waiving his stick over Luke was played on a loop. If you watch closely you can see when it loops. George wanted it to be longer and instead of reshooting it he just basically did a copy and paste of the clip. When Obi-Wan disappeared he became one with the force. Essentially Vader killed him and he became one with the force which is why Obi-Wan said if you strike me down I’ll only become stronger. Check out on youtube the 1997 MTV movie awards. Mike Myers introduces Chewbacca and Carrie Fisher gives him his medal he should’ve gotten at the end of this movie.

4:00 The scrolling text intro was inspired by the old Saturday matinee serials director George Lucas grew up on... the original versions of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, before they were adapted in color in the '80s. The funky scene transitions were also meant to be a late '40s/early '50s throwback. 7:55 They're Jawas, one of two indigenous sentient species on Tatooine. They sell and trade droids, and not all of the droids are acquired under strictly legal circumstances. 8:07 There were adults in those costumes. Lot of little people were hired for this production. 8:20 It took 4 years to make this movie. The planet Tatooine was named after one of the locations in Tunisia where they shot the desert scenes, so it was a multinational production too. 14:50 Vader's super strength actually comes from the cyborg suit he's in, if I remember correctly. However, Jedi can use the Force to augment themselves physically so he could potentially make himself even stronger than the suit allows. 15:45 If you're curious about any of these random aliens at the bar, there's a book called Tales From The Mos Eisley Cantina that tells some of their stories (the band, the bartender, the devil horns guy, the pipe smoker and that werewolf looking dude among others). 18:05 Jabba the Hutt is, well, a Hutt. But in the original version of the script he was human and Hutt was a title, not a species. This scene was actually deleted from the finished film in the theatrical release... in Return Of The Jedi they made Jabba nonhuman so when they restored this scene for the special edition of A New Hope they had to CGI over Jabba's human actor (but they left the "wonderful human being" line in). 18:55 Sound designer Ben Burtt had a lot of input, but ultimately the actors did as well because it had to be sounds they could actually make in many cases (yes, that's actually Peter Mayhew's voice doing Chewie's lines). 19:05 She switched to a British accent for this scene. It's not her usual voice. Later Carrie Fisher said that the change was unintentional on her part, but her scene partner here was the legendary British actor Peter Cushing so for whatever reason she was mimicking him. 34:55 Chewie getting snubbed for a medal was a hot topic among Star Wars fans for 2 decades, then in the late '90s at the MTV Movie Awards they finally gave him his medal. I think it was the year of the original trilogy rerelease. 36:45 Obi-wan became One With The Force when he died (and yes, his physical body is dead). It's one of the most elite mystical tricks a Jedi can pull, very few people know how to do it, but it allows those who do to transcend death, remaining a part of The Force and having some influence still on the physical universe even after they've died.

I am still watching your reaction. Your guitars remind me of a movie you might like: School of Rock. It's about a substitute teacher for high school who used to be in a rock band. He teaches his students to play rock in order to motivate them. It's a comedy. Another movie is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It's a martial arts movie with flying about a stolen sword. Watch with subtitles because the English dub is horrible sounding and not accurate. Another martial arts movie is Kung Fu Hustle. It's a comedy about a slum being harassed by a gang in the mid 20th century. It's also a comedy with a serious plot.

Release order is the correct way to watch it in order to avoid spoilers. It was originally titled just Star Wars. But, after its success (understatement) Lucas could then start making the full series. He started with this movie because, at the time, it was the most adventurous. Also, this movie originally had NO CGI and was all done with practical effects, rotoscoping, hand animation, and rudimentary green screen. Industrial Light and Magic invented computer controlled cameras to make the compositing possible. One last point, Greedo never fired. Han straight up executed him.

I know it’s probably been drilled into your head 1000x now but this is the like 4th edit of the film. E.g. what you’re seeing is modernized in many ways. The original trilogy saw major face lifting in the 1997 20th anniversary “special edition” releases. A New Hope is the most altered of all 3 of the original movies. Pretty easy to pick apart what is edited and what isn’t. In 2004, Lucas re-released even more updates for the DVD release, more updates for the Blu Ray release in 2011, and that is most likely what you are seeing. I highly recommend trying to find some clips of the action sequences in their original 1977 format. there are some pretty amazing tech wizards out there who have “despecialized” the movies.

I think the way they handled the death of Obi Wan was probably the worst mistake they made in this film. I remember watching this for the first time as a kid and being confused as to whether or not he actually died and after seeing a number of react videos here on youtube, it seems that almost everyone else is in the same boat before they see Episode 5. They really should have made it more clear that he was actually dead and hadn't just teleported somewhere. The fact that he speaks to Luke moments after being struck down doesn't help matters either.

The scene with Jabba was originally shot with a human actor, and Jabba was going to be a humanoid character, but the scene was deleted. Back in the 90’s, George Lucas re-did the original trilogy movies with CG characters, some new backgrounds…things that George wanted originally, but the technology wasn’t invented yet in 1977. There’s a special about this somewhere. I’ll see if I can find it on KZbin. Welcome to Star Wars!!

Star Wars hearkens back to the Flash Gordon space opera movies of the 1930's, which are considered hokey by modern standards. They incorporate the swashbuckling and fantasy of the Robin Hood, sword & sorcery, 3 Musketeers, King Arthur, etc. The movie trend of the 1960's and 1970's was pretty much social awareness. Very little of the escapism of earlier decades. By the time the first Star Wars appeared, nothing quite like it had been seen in almost a generation. The viewing public took to it like kids in a candy shop.

There's another curious video you may want to react to, now you've seen this movie. It's a remastered scene 38, which is the duel between Obi-Wan and Vader. This movie was shot in 1976. Alec Guiness was an old man. They didn't have much time or money to do a proper duel. It was pretty much "man with stick". This feels very out of place after you've seen the Prequel Trilogy. There, the Jedi are very agile, very physical, athletic etc. So the remastered scene, is a complete reimagination of the Obi-Wan and Vader fight from THIS movie, but much more in keeping with the Prequels. It's a great scene. Luke's duels throughout these movies are still in the "man with stick" vein though.

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤪 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub and the scene with Jabba the Hutt. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford forgot his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. The next two are the best of the series. Enjoy!

If she puts Star Trek in a poll, I'm voting for Star Trek. I still dream of them one day releasing an original trilogy dvd/blue ray set that lets you choose scene by scene between the original or one of the cgi updates and save your preference as your own personal cut. Mine would have Han shooting first and cut out the godawful musical number added to Jedi, but include the New Hope Jabba scene and the scene showing all the celebrations at the end of Jedi. Most of the cartoony background cgi would be gone, as would the lame sarlac beak, but the prequel actor would still be the emperor in Empire. The original actor would be in the first force ghost scene at the end of Jedi, then replaced by the prequel actor when Luke looks back. Etc.

Your reaction was a little subdued so it really was difficult to see if you were enjoying the movie. You've taken your first steps into a MUCH larger world. I saw this in 1977 in theaters, as I did the next two films when they were released. We knew so little about the Empire, how the Galactic Senate worked, who the Jedi were and what happened to them other than Obi-Wan telling Luke that Vader helped the Empire hunt down and destroy them. When Episodes 1-3 came out, it really helped answer some questions about the Jedi and their role as negotiators and peacekeepers. Then the Clone Wars animated series came out and it really added more to the Jedi's background and their involvement in the Clone War (as mentioned by Obi-Wan to Luke). Then you added the Rebels animated series, a final season 7 of the Clone Wars, and from there its been a non-stop ride of animated and live action series. The only thing you need to know right now is the Jedi Order is a religious institution of sorts, that follow a strict code of non-attachment and emotional disconnection so they are not influenced, and put their trust in The Force. Darth Vader is the product of letting your emotions control your actions instead of trusting in The Force.

The version you just watched is not the original version. The original was released before the advent of CGI, so Jabba never appeared in it. The scenes where Han is talking to Jabba, and a few others, were added later. Also, in the original, when Han shot Greedo in the cantina you couldn't see who shot, leading to a long time argument among fans as to whether or not Han shot first. George Lucas maintained that Greedo shot first, but it was obvious to many that Greedo never got a chance to fire. The scene in this version, where you could see Greedo shooting a split-second before Han (and somehow missing at a distance of five feet), was added in a later version. To answer a couple of your questions, the animal that the stormtroopers were riding on Tatooine were called dewbacks and the animals that the Tusken Raiders rode were banthas. There was an actor in the R2-D2 suit. Kenny Baker, who was also in Time Bandits (as well as others) died a few years ago. Anthony Daniels played C-3PO. The actor in the Darth Vader suit was David Prowse and the voice was done by James Earl Jones. There is one school of thought that the movies should be watched in chronological order, starting with episode I. Most fans, though, would recommend they be watched in release order, as you are doing, episodes IV-VI, then I-III, then VII-IX. When the original was released, it was just called Star Wars. "A New Hope" and "Episode IV" were added later.

29:11 ok so at this point in the story the Force is out of balance!! that’s because of what happened years prior to this episode, so the bad guys “Sith” have been calling all the shots in terms of control, it is foretold that the force will be brought back into balance by special individual, however before this happens evil cannot be allowed to draw anymore power, .. so the Jedi knights are all but extinct, except for Ben Kenobi who earlier on became Luke’s mentor & master, in order that he be trained as a Jedi like his father before him, only the bond between them is too great, simply because of “who” Luke is, and naturally his Skywalker blood, so in order to maintain and prevent any further ripples in the force which would ultimately benefit/attribute evil because of imbalance, Ben took himself out of the equation and joined himself to the Force completely, giving his place to Luke, making himself one with the Force, which is itself more powerful than any one good or bad guy, sacrificing himself at the same time giving Luke his place within the life force and allowing Han, Luke, and Leia to escape, so Ben isn’t dead, but spiritually one with the force.

star wars was a one off movie in the beginning because george lucas didnt know if people would like it so it has its own beginning middle and end .After it made all the money it did then they added the number IV to show it was not the beginning or the end. also IV, V, and VI is based on trying to attract young adults to see them so the storyline is strong. I , II, III is aimed at children and therefore has a little fun or sillyness added.

Two BIG changes in "A New Hope" are during the cantina sequence and before the Millennium Falcon escapes Mos Eisley. In the original version, Han is the only one who shoots and he kills Greedo like a badass for threatening to take his ship, establishing his character as a guy you don't mess with. There is no reveal of Jabba until "Return of the Jedi" and then he is not comedy relief, but a disgusting, pervy slug, who likes to watch people die horribly. FYI

11:08 So for thousands of years including the golden age which lead to this episode, the Jedi were representatives of peace & justice in the galaxy and were often called upon to resolve matters of potential conflict, they are all born with an ability called the Force, and the ability to use it depending upon what gifts it bestows upon what Jedi, at birth they are identified and then presented to then high council for training!! The force gifts ever Jedi differently, so depending upon these they were then allocated a master/mentor to learn from The Force is a mysterious energy field created by life that binds the galaxy together. Harnessing the power of the Force gives the Jedi, the Sith, and others sensitive to this spiritual energy extraordinary abilities, such as levitating objects, tricking minds, and seeing things before they happen. At this present time the Jedi have all been eradicated and there are only 3-4 in hiding since the Empire outlawed their practice

Welcome to the world of Star Wars. I will give some information for a better understanding of the universe. The Empire is a huge state that includes many planets and extends to most of the known galaxy, not counting some of the systems at the far edge. Initially, the empire was a constitutional monarchy, whose political affairs were governed not only by the emperor, but also by the senate, which includes a representative from each planet belonging to the empire, but after the creation of the Death Star, the senate was dissolved and power finally passed into the hands of the Emperor. Initially, the Empire was a galactic republic, but as a result of a series of events, the Lord of the Sith came to power, who proclaimed himself emperor (you will learn more about this in the prequels) Now about the structure of the Force, in this period of time, the two most powerful and well-known orders of forseusers are the Sith and the Jedi, they came from one ancient order of force users who served both its aspects - the Dark and the Light side. The dark and light side of the force are not the good and evil side, they represent two different currents of force and were named by members of the very first order in honor of the two moons that were satellites of the planet where this order was based, one was made of white stone, the other of black. This ancient order practiced a balance between the sides, the light one is more calm and creative, the dark one is more emotional and destructive. But over time, this order banned the study of the dark side of the force and focused on the light side, becoming the Jedi Order from the time. Once there was a split within the order and some members of the supreme Council were exiled to unknown regions of the galaxy because of the desire to study the dark side of the force. These fallen Jedi found the planet Korriban (or Morraband), where a humanoid undeveloped red-skinned race lived, which had a huge connection with the dark side. The fallen Jedi quickly subdued this race, which called itself the Sith, after which they named themselves the Sith Lords, creating a new order of force users, which was focused only on the dark side. With the passage of time, several major wars occurred between the newly created Sith Empire and the Old Republic, which included the Jedi as guardians of peace and justice. As a result, the Sith were almost destroyed several times, losing wars due to constant betrayals and internecine power struggles. But then a Sith lord was born, named Darth Bane, he created the rule of two, the rule that there can only be two Sith master and apprentice, a master to embody power, apprentice to reach for this power. When an apprentice becomes more powerful than a master, he kills him and takes his place, taking a new apprentice, the Sith were forced to go underground, but began to develop thanks to this. Darth Bane, after creating this rule, killed all the remaining Sith, becoming a master and taking a girl as an apprentice, who eventually killed him and, taking his place, continued the path of the Rule of Two. Sith and Jedi have opposite ideologies and philosophies, and most importantly - an attitude to the Force, Jedi serve the force, cutting themselves off from everything mundane, they are forbidden to take wives or husbands, have children, have property, nothing should cause affection and emotions and distract from serving the Force. Emotions lead to the dark side of the force, so the Sith raise their emotions to the absolute, they feed on them, most often hatred and rage, as one of the most powerful emotions, but also any other, if the Jedi serve the force like monks, then the Sith use the force to get what they want. Even the powers of the dark side and the light side are different, the light side is more creative and protective (force push, mind deception), when the dark side is more destructive and aggressive (force choke, force lightning) Now to the more relevant:) At the moment, thanks to political intrigues, the Sith lord Darth Sidious gained power over the galaxy, after which, with the help of his apprentice Darth Vader, he almost destroyed the Jedi Order, the Jedi are forced to hide without having contact with each other in the hope of someday being able to fight back. Oh yes, well, the names of the Sith Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, etc. are not names given at birth, they receive them when they join the order, the prefix Darth literally means Lord in the language of the Sith. The code of the sith Peace is a lie. There is only Passion. Through Passion, I gain Strength. Through Strength, I gain Power. Through Power, I gain Victory. Through Victory my chains are Broken. The Force shall free me The code of the Jedi There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.

I think I'm "New Hope commented" out, but comments do help, so I'll give you a rare 'quality' movie to which you can react. I've seen 3 reactions to this, so it not overdone and the stars are Barbra Streisand, Ryan O'Neil, Kenneth Mars and "introducing" Madeline Kahn. "What's Up Doc?" Directed by Peter Bogdanovich (1972.) Trust me. This is completely for your own enjoyment. "Propriety; noun: conformity to established standards of behavior or manner, suitability, rightness, or justice. See 'etiquette.'"
