Does anybody else remember Star Wars like this? Bad VHS tape quality, bad cable quality too, all the colors saturated beyond belief, and we all loved it. Even the t.v. premiere was something to applaud.

I'll never forget when this first came out. We all grew up playing baseball on the sandlot & watching Star Wars. My best friend saw this movie first & the next day we all woke up on the sandlot cos we ALWAYS slept there, & he was just going on & on & on about this movie & would NOT shut up. "Oh, you gotta see it, I'm telling you, its off the charts." He would say. So I went with him to the theater. As we got there, their was this line as far as the eye could see, I kid you not. And of course we were in the back of it. So I kept standing on my toes saying, "Was there an accident? What? What happened?" My friend was laughing his ass off & people around me thought I was nuts. Just as we got to the ticket window, they put up the "SOLD OUT" sign. Somehow, I let my friend talk me into keeping our spot in line till the next showing. So we finally get in & of course we sat front row & I won't lie to ya, the theater was PACKED STANDING ROOM ONLY with the smell of fresh popcorn in the air. And at the end of the movie, when the Death Star was blown to space dust, people in that theater were literally STANDING ON THERE SEATS GOING NUTS!!! I know, cos I was there. And it took me a while to soak this all in & finally I turned to my friend & says to em, "This could really get big." And he smiled at me & said, "Yep, I think its ALREADY big." A few sequels & and a million or billion dollar merchandising industry later, who knew? My friend saw it 42 times in the theater cos it was "Held Over" like forever & they would always say on TV "Held Over for the final week" only to have it "Held Over" for another week. lol I saw it 38 times at the theater & in all, at least 100 times since then, as I have em all on dvd now. Still my all time favorite movie is this one, episode 4 A New Hope. And when I watch some of the extra features & they show all those people surrounding the theater & those long lines just waiting to get in, I can speak from first hand experience when I say, its ALL TRUE!!! I know, cos I was there. Never seen anything like it before, & I highly doubt I'll ever see it again. George Lucas NAILED IT!!! And the rest as they say, is history.......

+Dare Devil Yea I know what ya mean. Take it from someone who was there & who experienced it first hand. All I can say is, I know what I saw & what I experienced & I'm telling you, I never saw anything like it before & I highly doubt I'll ever see anything like it again. When the Rebel Alliance blew up the Death Star at the end of Episode IV (4) that place went NUTS!!! People REALLY WERE standing on there seats just whooping it up like I ain't never seen before. I've been to allot of great movies before, but not even when Chief Brody blew the crap out of Jaws at the end, did that compare to the Star Wars experience & that's not taking anything away from Jaws cos that was also a great movie, but what I saw that night inside the theater when I saw Star Wars was in two words, PURE MAGIC...... It just clicked. And the rest as they say, is history. And just think, I was actually there to witness history in the movie industry. It really was, PURE MAGIC......

I just know what happened from my own experience cos I was there. Never saw anything like it, & I never saw it again. It was one of those moments that was etched out in time. You would've had to been there to understand the Star Wars movie experience in 1977 when it first came out. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I never saw again & I've seen many a movies in my day, but nothing ever even came close to that one magical night in time. In short, George Lucas NAILED IT!!!
@defiantone85568 жыл бұрын
Shoot, your just a young pup. lol I liked the 1st 3 Star Wars movies & then I liked the 3 later ones that led up to the 4th one which is the first Star Wars movie that reached the theaters & drive ins back in 1977. It was episode 4 that came out in 1977 followed by The Empire Strikes Back & then Return Of The Jedi. Later, George Lucas decided to go back & make episodes 1 through 3 to show us what led up to episode 4 which was what we all FIRST saw on the big screen in 1977. All of that, I liked. But IMO after Darth Vader died in the Return Of The Jedi & the Death Star was blown up again, IMO THAT, should've been the end of the Star Wars movies cos the bad guy, the evil Darth Vader was killed off, as was the Death Star being destroyed. So IMO what was left? The series of Star Wars movies had a beginning, episodes 1 through 3 a middle, episodes 4 & 5 & then an end, which was Return Of The Jedi in which Darth Vader was killed off & the Death Star destroyed. Now, all their doing is, milking this for what its worth. I know those who weren't around back in the 70's never got to see Star Wars on the big screen, but if all these sequels keep going on, the Star Wars movies will IMO lose its meaning & eventually look silly. And that's not how I wanna remember these classic movies. So speaking for just me, I'll stick to the first 6 Star Wars movies & I'll pass on all the rest of em. I didn't watch any of the new ones & nor do I care too. So I'm with you on that one.

Look at the copyright at the end. 1976. This was the teaser trailer and not the most common 30 sec version shown later on TV. It may seem bad to modern audiences, but in those days, it was meant to entice, not give away the entire story like now. It's slow for sure, but its better than knowing important plot points.

rebeca agoiz Ah, different tastes I suppose. I actually feel more for HAL at the end of 2001: ASO than I would for the Star Wars characters as they are archetypes. Not that that is a bad thing, but HAL has more complexity as a character, even if he is the antagonist.
@AnzuBrief11 жыл бұрын
More complexity than Vader? I guess your are right, it's a matter of taste, but I could never see it that way.

rebeca agoiz Well Vader is still an archetypal character, as he is the father who has sinned and in the end he faces his offspring, from which he is later redeemed. Vader follows the cycle of the "sins of the fathers" in a Greek tragedy.

1977, El Cerrito , CA. My dad is taking me to a movie. I have no idea whatsoever what we are going to see. He took me to the movies all of the time. As we pull out my uncle is coming the other way. They stop and chat and I remember him saying " Oh you're going to see that Star Wars movie? I heard that and it meant nothing to me. Blank. I was 7yrs. old had never heard of it nor seen a trailer, nothing. The Title meant nothing to me (you would think now that it is self explanatory) I knew that movies had all crazy titles that were not literal and I had forgotten it long before we reached the EARLY showing in SF. When we got there the line was WAY down the street and around a corner. Well my dad takes me into this electronics store right next to the theatre, took a fake look around and we exited the door and stood there. In line Right near the very front. ( Yes my dad is one of those jerks. NOT me.) . Early showing so remember there were no costumes, T shirts nothing in the crowd. Didn't even see a movie poster so I was still a complete blank as far as the movie. We walk in and sit. Now this was a big, huge old proper theater. Huge screen. Would qualify as Imax today in the tiny 16Plex theaters of today. An enormous chandelier hung from the ceiling. It was bigger than my dad's apartment at the time. With a thin coat of dust on it as these big old one screen theaters were going out of style in favor of the multiplex. Till this day I have never seen even close to such a big audience at a movie. I was used to MUCH smaller suburban theaters myself. I surveyed my surroundings and was amazed. We were in the front of the balcony and even IT seemed to hold a thousand people. Looking down below it seemed like ten times more. Those old pretty theaters held a mass of people. Never seen a screen that big either. Even from the balcony it looked huge. So with my mind a blank (as to what the movie was. Could have been a nature film for all I knew. New Benjy film maybe) the lights went down. The fanfare and the crawl got my attention. The music was so big,full and powerful. Then what happens? This is the part I wondered about for years. Leia's ship and a star destroyer come overhead. Scared the living shit out of me. I ducked in my seat, covered my head looking up. I was relieved to see the ceiling still there. Not because I was a dumb kid, I had seen many movies bye then and knew the difference between movies and reality. Maybe 5% was the huge screen but it was the sound that freaked me out. It was so real you could feel it. I mean literally feel the roar of the engines everything. Felt like these ships were literally coming over our heads. Never experienced anything like it. Saw the movie a hundred more times in my local theaters but never came close to that first time. Always wondered why. I knew it wasn't just me, it was something about that theater or something. But I always wondered. THEN years later. Early 90's at work an older man who spent most of his life living in SF told me something. He knew the theater and knew exactly what happened. He said just before SW played there a Huge WWII epic played there. It was a huge film and was supposed to be a blockbuster. So for the occasion the movie people installed a super duper custom sound system. Bigger, better more powerful speakers and MORE of them. Well after the WWII film was over the theater just kept it going for Star Wars. So after 15 years of wondering I had my answer. A little side note. It's a little sad that I don't know if anyone can ever have the same experience I did ever again. Darth vader is known everywhere now. He's kinda cool and so are storm troopers. NOT that day in 77 buddy. He was, well the storm troopers finally getting through the door of Lea's ship was frightening but when Vader walked in I felt my heart drop into my stomach. He was freakin' SCAREY ! There was nothing cool or familiar about him then he was just terrifying. Like Hitler and the Nazis. Now he is a part of pop culture and I don't think will never be feared again. Even for kids, I mean daddy has Darth Vader T-shirts, Action figures etc....... I had never seen the likes of him at the time. Well that was my first Star Wars viewing. I would love to hear about your first SW encounter in 77 or even later. Send to my youtube page.

It wasn't a bad trailer. It might seem that way *now*. But in 1977, it was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. I was 8 years old, and I was blown away with excitement. It was the birth of the blockbuster.
@Discosaturn11 жыл бұрын
The movie was supposed to be released on Christmas 1976. However, delays in production caused Lucas to scrap the Christmas release date and pushed it to May 25, 1977. That is why the final soundtrack score wasn't even finished yet, not to mention there were some other things to be finished on time without rushing it. Of course, we all think a great movie would have a bad trailer and I thought it looked like a corny Star Trek commercial from the '60s. But if you look at movie trailers today...well...it's a different story. Many trailers are now either misleading audiences with a recut to the actual thing (i.e., Bridge to Terabithia with a Narnia-style trailer) or giving away the whole plot (i.e., the 2013 trailer to Carrie).

Why would the quality of a trailer determine how much money a movie would make? Why do you care how much money a movie makes anyway? Why wouldn't you care more about the critical reception?
@Karthos10009 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Banner This was the distant past, when the internet didn't exist so "Critical Reception" was limited to a handful of professional reviewers and your personal friends who had seen the movie. Aside from that, you had little to persuade you to see a movie beyond trailers. When you went to see Raiders of the Lost Ark, all you knew was that Harrison Ford was in it and it wasn't Star Wars. Note that I didn't say the movie sucked. It's in my top 10 (probably my top 5) favorite movies of all time. I also noted that trailers in the 70s all sucked, because movies hadn't QUITE made the transition from "an event" to "a diversion" that they did in the late 70s. They were trending that direction, but hollywood has always been slow to catch on to trends.

Stephen Gunnoe Well, it was possibly that the Lightsaber colors weren't made before the trailer came out or the quality from the trailer possibly bad due to the lighting effect before it was fixed in the final version.

The old saying "If it doesn't need fixing, don't fix it". George Lucas should have thought of that when he made the last three Star Wars movies. He literally turned a master peace into crap.

Fake trailer as per usual. Wrong title card, and we all know Star Wars never looked this shitty.
@pjamese310 жыл бұрын
That's the original trailer. I remember watching it when I was 11. I also found the trailer online back in the early days of the internet back in the '90s. This isn't a digital copy of the original print. It looks like someone recorded the original TV trailer on VHS and years later, dubbed the VHS tape to digital to put it on KZbin. On the original trailer, there wasn't any "A New Hope" subtitle.
@fhb310 жыл бұрын
Lucas put this ad on the DVDs and Blu-Rays (pre-Disney), so it HAS to be real. This is the ONLY time Star Wars looked... meh (by today's standards). NOT terrible, but... meh.

Felix Brown If I was a person who never saw star wars I would not see this movie at all. Crappiest trailer of all times. It's like the announcer was given the footage and he had to make an improv.
@pjamese310 жыл бұрын
THEPELADOMASTER That's how they did trailers in the '70s. They all sucked. The problem is you're judging it by today's standards. You can't compare the original Star Wars trailer to something like Avengers, Hobbit or Guardians of the Galaxy.

Just love the rawness of the footage in this trailer, this is as near to the original shhot footage as you can humanly get after all this time. Just love the white sabers, the bartender with cockney accent and the general unfinished air of this..primeval Star Wars history.

feels nothing like Star Wars without John Williams' score. The music has such a great impact on the film.

This is a 70s trailer. They DID evolve over time, keep in mind. The music however is one of the jewels of classical music and one of the most famous classical music pieces, Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". I'm sure John Williams chose that himself as he was inspired by so many classical composers when writing the score for this film.

funny when you realizw how long this franchise has been around, my dad introduced me ti star wars when I was little and when I found out how old it was I was amazed, to think this franchise has become so iconic, so breathtaking that its crossed the generational gap that many other films could not, whether the new movies are good or bad, to me, is irrelevant because there very existence will at some point lead another young child to see the original story that took place a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, heres to star wars and the people who love it and may the force be with us all

I wasn't even born back then, but I have to say I love that old school charm that things such as films and nusic had back in those days 70s, 80s, 90s (I was born 89, so I did see the 90s at least)
